No Strings Attached

No Strings Attached

The Oscar nominations have been posted. The movies that currently opening is tend to be on my B list. Ivan Reitman, the director, is my hero because his family donated the land for the TIFF Bell Lightbox. This is a whimsical silly little film. It is the old story of the boy and girl who meet. There is a conflict and the resolution of the conflict brings them together.

How could the adorable Natalie Portman take on this role after playing a starring performance in Black Swan? It has even been suggested that she could lose the Oscar as a result of this silly film. I doubt that. Ashton Kucher is the leading man. Yes, he does have a beautiful body and he is cute.

The two originally meet as youngsters at a summer camp. They meet several years later. Emma invites Adam to join her to attend an event. It turns out the event is her father’s funeral. They keep bumping into each other and decide to become friends only with benefits.

Adam works as a screen writer. His father is a TV star. Some humor is provided when the father becomes involved with one of Adam’s former girlfriends.( not very funny)

Emma is a young doctor who doesn’t have much time for a relationship. She does find time for a lot of sex with Adam. They certainly do have a lot of benefits.

When he announces that he really loves her she can’t cope. They try to be separated. They try to date others. It just doesn’t work. The ending was obvious from the beginning.

It is entertaining but obviously with no depth.
