The Women of the Sixth Floor

The Women Of The Sixth Floor

This is French cinema at its best. The reviews led me to believe this is a film about a rich man falling for one of his maids. I thought ‘Here we go again with those naughty Frenchmen.” The film is funny but there is still a serious undertone about a man who changes his values and begins to understand the downtrodden and helps them. In so doing he becomes a better person.
Jean Louis Joubert is a wealthy man living a good but boring life. His wife is cold and spends her time having tea, shopping and being exhausted from her boring rituals. Their two sons are arrogant and spoilt. They live on the first floor of an apartment building. The maids for all the residents of the apartment building live in cramped quarters on the sixth floor. The maids are from Spain. Their living conditions are horrendous and squalid. .They work hard for their rich patrons and get little for it.
Germaine, the long standing maid leaves and the household goes into chaos. When Monsieur Joubert complains that he has no clean shirts his wife states,”Wear a sweater.”
Marie arrives in town and begins to work for Madam and Monsieur Joubert. She demands more money. She ingratiates herself with the haughty wife. She does a magnificent job in keeping the apartment spotless and serving Monsieur Joubert the perfect soft boiled egg.
Monsieur Joubert goes to the sixth floor and is appalled. He calls in a plumber. He helps the women.
When Madame Joubert accuses her husband of having an affair he goes to live on the sixth floor with all the women. It is hilarious. They teach him to sing and dance. He helps them out by paying for things they need. He shares his expensive wine and both the maids and Monsieur Joubert have a great time.
The women are such characters. There is humor and yet pathos for the way they live. Monsieur Joubert becomes a caring loving person respected by the maids. Too bad that Madame Joubert finds out too late that she a good caring husband.
The actors perform well the story is entertaining. I didn’t want it to end.

DT Bistro

DT Bistro Patisserie 154 Harbord St 416 916 8155

You begin salivating the minute you enter DT Bistro. The DT stands for Dessert Trends. Donald Duang is an Olympic champion in the World Culinary Olympics. Just look at the cooler and see the myriad of exotic pastries. The restaurant began as a coffee pastry shop. It is well situated in the Annex at Brunswick and Harbord.
Fortunately for foodies everywhere the menu was extended and brunch, lunch and dinner is now a gourmet reality. It has never failed. The presentation is artistic. The menu is creative and the taste is guaranteed.
The $15.00 lunch special is the best value in town. Lovely white dishes have three sections. The soup, main course and dessert are beautifully presented on this dish. My friend opted for the Minestrone, Mushroom Sandwich and Carrot Cake. It was fresh, attractive and oh so tasty. There are several choices in each category. I always am mindful of the dessert selections. Crème Caramel, Chocolate Cake and Carrot Cake were the choices for the Prix-fixe lunch.
I did show will power and decided to order from the regular menu. Tuna Nicoise is offered as a sandwich.($15.00) I asked for it to be presented as a salad. It was so creatively presented. I almost hesitated to start eating all the delicious goodies. The fresh tuna had been poached and was so tender it melted in my mouth. Home made bread with an olive paste was on the side.
DT is known for their exquisite Quiche. The Goat Cheese & Vegetable Quiche was available as a regular menu item ($14.00) or as part of the 3 course lunch. Lemon Shrimp Crepes are filled with béchamel, Asia go, asparagus and onions.($14.00)
I don’t know how DT does their hiring but it is guaranteed that the young servers are so attentive and knowledgeable. It is always a treat to dine here. The windows along one wall bring in so much light. The white walls always make me feel I am dining in an atrium.
The place is charming. The food is exquisite. You must leave room for a dessert.

Take Shelter

Take Shelter

I had no intention of seeing this film. I was urged by a member of my exercise class and I promised to go. Yes, it is a good film. I was stressed throughout never knowing what was going to happen. I wanted to take shelter myself many times throughout the film because of the ongoing tension.
There is a lot of rain and tremendous storms. They are symbolic of the stress and turmoil within Curtis’s head.
At first we meet an idyllic family. The mother and father are deeply in love. Their young daughter cannot hear but they treasure her and spend time with her. They are saving for a cochlear transplant.
Strange things begin to happen to the father. They are startling events and often are related to a storm. At first I wasn’t sure what was real and what was imagined. The father begins to think he is mentally ill just like his mother. His symptoms become worse. He has terrible dreams and wakes up feeling ill from the terror.
He seeks medical help. It begins to wear on his usually understanding wife. He loses his friends, his job and the town’s people turn on him.
Curtis fears a great tornado is going to hit the area and he builds at great cost (that he can ill afford) a deep tornado shelter. He stocks it with can goods and buys gas masks for the family.
I found his nightmares unsettling and frightening. . I was empathetic with his wife hoping she would hang onto this relationship that was going sour very quickly.
The actors are excellent in their roles. The cinematography is superb and helps to paint a picture of a tranquil landscape in opposition with the whirling turmoil inside the main character.

Yitz's

Yitz’s 346 Eglinton Ave West 416 487 4506

This is the best deli in town. It has been a family institution since my children were young. We still like to meet there for our comfort treat. Just say ‘Matzah Ball Soup’ and we head off for a fix.
The meat is lean and the portions are ample. Service is with a smile.
My daughter-in-law is recuperating from a knee replacement. This is a long painful process. She needed a treat. This was just what the doctor ordered.
The Chicken Matzah Ball Soup brings back memories of my mother’s matzah balls. They are perfectly light and fluffy. The soup is flavorful. I order a large bowl with two matzah balls. Cabbage Borscht and the Soup of the Day (Pea Soup) are all $4.75 for a regular size bowl.
The Combination Sandwich is my son’s favorite. He loves Corned Beef and Chopped Liver.($13.95) My daughter-in-law totally enjoyed her treat of a Corned Beef Sandwich.($7.75) The sandwiches are available on rye bread, a kaiser roll or onion bun. We shared a Dill Pickle ($1.50) and also one of their delicious Potato Latke with apple sauce.($6.75)
The daily specials offer a choice of a tasty entrée. Poached Salmon is served with a chef salad and Dijon vinaigrette dressing.($11.95) The Honey Garlic Miami Ribs with French fries are a house specialty.($9.95)
The gentleman at the next table was enjoying the largest Cabbage Roll ($6.95) I have ever seen.
Many of the customers are regulars. The servers know them and they obviously know the menu well.
My mother used to love coming here for an outing of good food. Her favorite was the Gefilte Fish with horseradish.($7.25) My mother was a great cook and we all claim that Yitz’s is as good as her home cooking.
Inclusive dinners include soup, choice of two side dishes and a slice of fresh baked pie. Liver Lovers opt for the Braised Baby Beef Liver Steak with fried onions.($16.95)
Yitz’s is open 7 days a week from 10:00 am, to 9:00p.m. They do an amazing take out and offer catering. During the High Holidays the line up is extensive to pick up pre orders. There is a reason Yitz’s has been around for so many years. The food is guaranteed delicious. It is comfort food to soothe the soul and fill the stomach.
Make sure you check out the humidor cupboard. There is a fine selection of imported cigars.
Baking is prepared at the front of the shop. The aroma is tantalizing. The Double Chocolate Cookies are great. The Pies are homemade. Prepared foods are available at the front of the restaurant for take out.
I have been a regular customer for countless years and look forward to many more years of Yitz’s deli and home style food.

Revenge of the Electric Car

Revenge Of the Electric Car

I like to think of myself as an environmentalist and am interested in any way possible to keep our air of better quality. I am still horrified by the previous film a few years ago, Who Killed The Electric Car. It only showed for a week and most people were unaware of that thought provoking film. GM had produced an electric car, EV-1. All of a sudden the contract was cancelled. Even more horrendous was the fact that all the cars were ultimately gathered and destroyed. Various suspects included the government, GM and the oil industry.
GM has had an interesting history since that time. They came close to bankruptcy just a few years ago. Obama and his government bailed them out. Do you remember the hearings into the car industry? The CEO’s all arrived in private planes. They were severely chastised and told they had better get their act together. They were encouraged to develop smaller less gas guzzling cars.
Vice President Bob Lutz became one of the first developers of the electric cars. I really enjoyed listening to that larger than life cigar smoking executive. It was as if he had a transformation.
CEO Carlos Ghosn also becomes a hero in developing an electric car for Nissan.
My favorite character is Elon Musk. He was the creative genius behind Pay Pal. We see the trials and the struggle he had in developing his model for Tesla. He invested so much of his own money and constantly was threatened with bankruptcy. We meet his family and hear how he has to work so many hours and doesn’t get enough time with his delightful family.
I wanted to stand up and cheer for the heroes who battled all the odds to develop an electric car. They are still very expensive but hopefully as the masses demand it they will come down in price. What a difference it will make to the environment.
This is a thought provoking documentary.

El Pleybeyo

El Pleybeyo 1453 Bathurst St 416 532 5627

I just took a one evening trip to Peru. I have always wanted to go there. My good friends live in my former condo. I am so fortunate to keep in touch with this stimulating interesting couple. It was their choice to go Peruvian and I was only too happy to try this restaurant. I arrived early and was able to take in the ambiance. Paintings of Peru hang on the walls of this intimate charming restaurant. Peruvian music was playing. A large Spanish speaking family was enjoying wine and Peruvian food. I sat back and relaxed and pretended I was in Peru. I do confess to listening in to the conversation at that table. I love the wonderful Spanish language and was trying to understand the conversation. The food at El Pleybeyo is authentic. It is family run. The wife is the chef and the husband manages the front of the restaurant. They were both so delightful. It was all a treat from beginning to end.
Two of us shared the Ensalada de Palta ($7.50) Avocado with onions, tomatoes, potatoes were enhanced with the special El Plebeyo dressing. It was so tasty and beautifully plated.
The Sopa Chilcano is a light fish broth with mussels and green onions.($5.95) It arrived in an enormous white bowl large enough for a family. It was flavorful and totally consumed.
We were tempted with the Beet Salad served with Spanish onions, olive oil, lemons and herbs.($7.95) I will save it for my next visit.
The two ladies opted for another appetizer because we were already full from our first course. My friend told me the Calamar a la Parilla was exquisite.($11.95) It was flavorful and very tender. The grilled calamari is served with a fresh green salad in balsamic reduction.
I ordered the Escebecche De Pescado ($11.95) Marinated fish is prepared in a delicate red wine and herb sauce. What a perfect meal! The gentleman in our group wanted something heartier. Our friendly manager suggested the Lomo Saltado O Lomo De Pollo.($17.95) Sauteed stir fried beef is prepared with onions, tomatoes and served with rice. Ternera Al Limono offers a gourmet delight of veal in lemon sauce with tiger shrimps and grilled vegetables.($19.95)
Tallarin Saltado de Mariscos is a gourmet special offering linguine with sautéed seafood combination of shrimp, mussels, calamari cooked in a white wine garlic sauce with olive oil and a touch of soya sauce.($24.95) Plato Plebeyo is a seafood delight of shrimp, grilled salmon in a light dill sauce with warm vegetables, julienne of sweet potatoes, black beans and saffron rice.($25.95)
There are many options in every category. It is prepared in a Peruvian style with much care and skill.
The presentation of each dish was a work of art. We shared a Crème Caramel for dessert. All three of us walked out feeling completed satiated and so delighted with the total evening. This was indeed a rare trip to Peru in just one evening.

Cantine

Cantine 138 Avenue Rd 416 923 4822

The cousins like to have periodic reunions. There is a lot of laughter and stories to retell. We have a lot of fun. We have our cousin C to thank for this latest reunion. He organized it all and we were thrilled and most appreciative.
Cantine was the perfect venue. Joe Bersani has been chef/manager/owner of this favorite restaurant for many years. He walks about and chats with the guests. You are made to feel like part of a family.
Several of us live in the neighborhood and a few of the guests claim they dine here at least once a week. It is a lovely walk to the corner of Davenport and Avenue Rd. This is the hub for meeting in the Annex. The food is exquisite. The service is always delightful.
It is a busy spot. There were a lot of people but we were content that we were not too noisy and the other diners certainly did not bother us. Ten of us were able to get together. The restaurant accommodates a large group very efficiently.
Conrad was our server. He had charm, humor and patience in looking after this large group. We thank him for all the attention and great service.
Would you believe I don’t even look at the menu when I come here? My favorite dish is the Grilled Tuna Salad served with wasabi mayonnaise. I am still salivating thinking about it. Large chunks of freshly grilled Ahi tuna melt in your mouth. The greens are fresh and lightly flavored with tasty vinaigrette. Why would I order anything else when I enjoy this perfect dish so much?
At dinner I have enjoyed Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna with wasabi, avocado and tomato salsa.($20.95)
My brother enjoyed the Salad Nicoise.($13.95) Solid white tuna, green beans, tomato, egg, potato and artichoke heart are served on fresh crisp greens. I noticed two of the guests were enjoying their Cobb Salad and another cousin ordered a fresh Salad with Goat Cheese. It was all so delicious.
Steamed P.E.I Mussels are a house specialty. ($11.95) They are prepared in white wine, shallots, lemon, parsley and butter.
Penne with Grilled Chicken and Asparagus is served in a light saffron cream sauce.($14.95)
The Pizzas are served fresh from the pizza oven. Marguerite Pizza is flavored with a tomato sauce, fresh basil and bocconcini cheese.($11.95)
Try and save some room for a Key Lime Pie or a Chocolate Biscotti. How delicious!
There is something for everyone.
Some guests stop by for a drink and a little nibble. The front of the restaurant features comfortable deep chairs. It is great to relax and watch all the action while having a light snack and drink.
Joe Bersani has made this a ‘go to place’ in the Annex. It has never let me down. The cousins had a memorable lunch and a great visit. Thanks to our cousin for being the gracious generous host. Thanks to Cantine for being the best in the neighborhood. What a treat.

Footloose

Footloose

I think I must have something loose. I am on overload this week end with opera, dinners, Reel Talk and a dinner party at my home. I needed to be in the kitchen preparing. Somehow I knew it would all get done and I felt this would be a lighthearted fun filled film.
I always enjoyed Julianne Hough as one of the winning professional dancers on Dancing With The Stars. She was always my favorite. She is adorable and so perky. Her personality shines. I knew there would be some fine dancing.
Her co partner Kenny Wormald is an amazing dancer as well. The dancing sequences made the film for me. Ren (Wormwald) arrives in a small very red neck community in the south to live with his uncle and family.
A tragedy in this town several years before changed everything. Five young students were killed in a car accident. They had been driving too quickly, partying and not paying attention. The minister in the town (played by Dennis Quaid) lost his son. He maneuvered the town council to come up with some stringent new rules. The young folk were not allowed to dance. They couldn’t listen to loud music and were curtailed in many ways from having fun.
The minister’s daughter, Ariel, (Julianne Hough) is actually quite a wild child. She is rebelling against her father’s rules. She wears provocative clothes. Her boyfriend is a wild kid who drives stock cars. The rebellious young teenagers meet at a car rally and act out all their repressed feelings.
Ren takes a shine to Ariel. He also is battling his demons from his mother’s death. He can’t understand all this southern conservatism. He was brought up in Boston and the behavior and the rules of the town are confusing to him.
Ren falls for the lovely Ariel. As in all fairytales he makes peace with the parents. He becomes a hero in the town.
A story is required to tie together all the dancing acts. The story is not the essential part of the film. The dancing is extraordinary. I loved every sequence. I confess to even shedding a tear or two near the ending of the film. This could be called a high school musical. It is an excuse to showcase the talent of some great dancers. It was juvenile but a lot of fun. I guess you could stretch it and find a moral. The young kids were able to show the adults that they were responsible and deserved to have fun as they grow up.
Young people will relate to this film and I imagine it was geared to that age level. It is a good thing there were only 5 people in the audience. I was able to sneak out quickly.

Anna Bolena

Anna Bolena Met Opera HD Live

The Met wows us again in a spectacular performance. I was thrilled from the first note of the orchestra and loved every minute of this spectacular performance.
Anna Netrebko was the star in her performance of Anne Boleyn, the doomed wife of King Henry. Her voice is superb and as an actor she was flawless.
In fact every performer was first rate. The sets were minimal and it allowed your attention to fully focus on the performance.
The music by Donizetti was splendid and the chorus was at its best.
It is an emotional story. I found myself rooting for Anne Boleyn throughout hoping there would be a different ending.
Her former lover, Percy was brilliantly sung by Stephen Costello.
I always enjoy the interviews during the intermission. The costume designer explained her historic research to make the costumes authentic. Stars in the performance are interviewed.
It is amazing to get a first hand look behind the scenes. Those paying high prices in New York do not have some of the advantages of the film production.
I purchase tickets for the whole series at one time. You can opt to buy for a single performance or for several. Most operas are probably sold out by this time. Try to plan ahead. There is always an encore production. If you have never been you owe it to yourself to have this amazing experience. The best of the Metropolitan Opera Company is transferred live by satellite. Over 30 countries around the world watch the same performance at the same time. In my opinion it is the best value for a cultural experience.
I’m actually upset that I am missing the next two operas because of a wedding in Israel. Shame on me. I will try to see the encore productions.
This was one of the better operas. I am still haunted by the dramatic ending as Anne Boleyn goes forward to meet her executioner. It doesn’t get much more dramatic than that.

Fishbar

Fishbar 217 Ossington Ave 647 340 0227

Ossington Ave is the hottest street in town. Fishbar is the new kid on the block and so exciting and fresh. William Tavares is a creative genius. He is not formally trained and yet he has the street smarts and the creativity to make Fishbar a big success.
It is appealing the minute you enter the premise. The brick exposed walls at the front give a warmth and blend with the wooden floors. The walls at the back are a deep grey color. One wall has 8 convex circular mirrors suspended on the wall. The seating along one wall features wooden church pews. The bare Edison light bulbs are an example of Tavares’s ingenuity.
The menu suggests you dine tapas style and encourages sharing. The portions are not large so you can freely enjoy several items from the menu. The main thing is the food is ocean wise. In chatting with Tavares I was so impressed with his business integrity and philosophy of serving food. Working along with Tavares is a well seasoned staff that hails from some of the top restaurants in the city. Even the business card is creative. The skeleton of a fish graces the card. I am guessing we are to presume that some happy client enjoyed the total flesh of the fish. Local seasonal food dominates the menu.
Oysters are a specialty. The featured oysters of the evening are listed on a blackboard. A Seasonal Platter offers oysters, cocktail crab claws, peel n’ eat shrimp, fresh horseradish, cocktail sauce and fresh lemon.($22.00 per person). You might choose to begin with Steelhead Trout Fille Rillette with house made pickles and crostini.($8.00) Blueberry Smoked Salmon is served with a chevre mousse and wild blueberries.($8.00) Cold appetizers also balance the menu. Baby Arugula is offered with botarga pickled mushrooms and ramp vinaigrette.($9.00) Wild Caught Shrimp Cocktail is a favorite with the Mississippi bottom horseradish cocktail sauce.(15.00))
I saw Swordfish ($!7.00) on the menu and went into ecstacy. This fish is not often offered. The grilled swordfish is harpoon caught and served with sautéed peppers. The fish literally melted in my mouth. It was perfectly delicious.
I ordered a side of Ontario Green Beans.($6.00) Imagine getting excited with green beans. They were crisp and perfectly cooked. The butter tarragon sauce with slivered almonds made this a delicious choice. My dining companion was elated with the Grilled Sardine. ($10.00) I didn’t know a sardine could be so large. It was served with salsa verde and fresh baby arugula. She also chose the Pan Seared Arctic Char with grilled potato and basil.($17.00)
The food is beautifully plated. All the senses come to play with this creative gourmet food.

The Ides of March

The Ides Of March

I am a political junkie. Everyday there is so much to devour in local, national and international politics. People are getting angry and the disfavor with politicians is reaching epic proportions. I was interested in the film because of the topic. It’s a story about a governor fighting his rival in the primaries to become the candidate for President of the United States. Initially he is a man of integrity and high values. That is until things change.
The all star cast is amazing. Each actor performs his part to perfection. I believe that Ryan Gosling is the real star. He plays the part of Steve working in a high level position to help the Democratic Governor Mike Morris’s get elected. He works long hours and never seems to take his focus from his work.
Governor Morris is played by George Clooney. At the beginning of the film he is charming, sincere, dedicated and above all full of integrity with the highest values.
Steve has a working relationship with a reporter. She tells him,” Mike Morris is a politician. He is a nice guy. Sooner or later he’ll let you down.” That almost becomes the key to the rest of the story.
Steve works directly under the campaign manager played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Steve neglects to tell his boss that he has been propositioned for a job by the manager of the opposing candidate. Paul Giamatti is superb as the opposition manager.
What a cast! There is suspense, sex, intrigue, slander and blackmail.
Steve uncovers a deep dark secret. Things begin to unravel. He finds himself without a job. The opposition doesn’t want him anymore. The intrigue and dirty dealings are so believable.
Of course there has to be sexual undercurrents and this evolves into a major part of the story. It won’t surprise you to learn that a young intern gets herself into trouble. When will they ever learn?
I sat on the edge of my seat. I was fascinated. I kept hoping that the handsome intelligent Democratic candidate would win in an honorable way. I guess politics just doesn’t operate that way.

Rapido

Rapido 1089 Bathurst St at Dupont 416 535 3500
There are different reasons for going out to dine. On some occasions I welcome dressing up and experiencing a high end gourmet restaurant. I equally enjoy a relaxed home style atmosphere wearing my old dungarees.
Rapido is an interesting concept. Marco is mainly a caterer Santaguida Fine Foods is his creation established at 966 Bathurst St and can be reached at 416 918 9674. A reliable source tells me the catered food is outstanding. The restaurant is across the road from the catering establishment and is open from 8:00a.m.until 4:00. p.m.
My friend Shelly recommended Rapido for a light delicious lunch. I jumped into my car and we both set out for an adventure. (For me a new place and for her a return visit.)The large kitchen at the back is so functional and charming. It is completely open. The enormous sky light offers warmth and light. In fact the last table is right beside the stove. You could actually reach out and stir the soup. On this occasion two large pots of Turkey Soup and Squash Soup were bubbling away. The exposed brick wall makes for a homey atmosphere. One wall of plants adds a garden atmosphere. A large wooden block table is in the middle and obviously all the preparations take place here. Outside at the back is an inviting garden with tables and chairs. It was great to chat with Marco, chef /owner. He told us how much he loves his job, his kitchen and his work. It showed with his charming smile.
Jars of home made preserved peppers are on sale at the front counter. My friend purchased two jars of the sautéed peppers. I couldn’t resist the Biscotti.($2.00) There are several flavors. I opted for the poppy seed biscotti. I had just finished a big lunch and couldn’t even wait until I reached the car. In fact it was all gone before I crossed the road. I love biscotti and these were the best. I felt better when Shelly also devoured hers immediately.
The home made Pizzas are very flavorful. There was a lot of fresh tomato sauce and parmesan cheese. It was also topped with grilled kale. The slice was a generous portion. We both enjoyed our lunch. She also opted for the home made Turkey Soup and said it was so full of flavor. Soup is offered at $5.95 for a bowl.
You can have a combination of soup and salad or Soup and Panini. for $9.95.
The paninis are displayed in a cooler. They will happily grill them for you. The Paninis are enormous in size. Turkey, Chicken & Brie, Veggie, roast Beef, Corned Beef and Tuna are all available. Fresh salads are also on display. You can enjoy one salad for $5.25 or have a sampler plate of several for $9.95 The Vegetable Medley is prepared with purple potatoes, broccoli, and cauliflower. The Asian Noodles is a composition of egg based noodles in Hosein Sauce with sesame seeds and mixed veggies. The Pesto Salad comes with tomatoes and cucumbers in a tasty pest sauce.
My friend Shelly told me she has used Marco’s catering for several parties and highly recommends his service and food. He came to her house and provided all that was necessary for a successful delicious cocktail party.
This is such a friendly spot. Drop by for coffee and a Muffin or a Home Made Sweet. Have a lunch or light snack. The atmosphere is relaxing. I was made to feel very much at home. We then strolled on Bathurst St just south of Dupont. I was amazed at the number of restaurants and clothing boutiques. This is obviously a neighborhood in transition. What fun!

Gamberoni

Gamberoni 3238 Yonge St 416 482 3063

Many years ago the servers were opera students and would sing opera arias while serving the clients. The food has always been great. The music was an added touch. I haven’t been at Gamberoni for a few years now.
My daughter-in-law had a knee replacement and walking is a painful difficult task. They live in the Lawrence Yonge area. She needed an outing especially to celebrate their anniversary.
It is always busy but comfortable and not too noisy. The menu is extensive and offers so many wonderful Italian specialties. The black board lists the daily specials. A printed card also informs you of daily specials. I find the service efficient and friendly. The food is wonderful and the prices are very fair.
We started by sharing a Caesar Salad ($7.95). We all commented on the crisp romaine lettuce. The creamy dressing was very tasty. We ate it all immediately. We also devoured a basket of tasty crunchy bread enhanced with a fine olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
My daughter-in-law told me she has always enjoyed the Shrimp Diavola. ($17.95) We both ordered it. A large portion of spaghetti in a tasty garlic tomato sauce was presented. The shrimp were mildly spicy and so flavorful. It was a real treat.
My son ordered the Veal Medaglioni.($19.95) It is prepared with a red wine, mushroom and cream sauce. The veal was tender and he loved the sauce. We did consider the Eggplant Parmigiana ($14.95) but decided that would wait for a future visit. Pasta comes in every shape and form and there are a variety of sauces.
Rigatone Pastore features mushrooms, pink sauce and ricotta cheese.($14.95) Linguine Gamberoni features scallops, shrimp with olive oil and garlic.($18.95)
Fresh fish is available at market price. Salmon and Red Snapper were the specialties on this occasion. All main courses include pasta and vegetables.
The Tartufo was a delicious conclusion to our celebration.
Gamberoni has been around for many years. It is a neighborhood institution. It was so lovely to return to a favorite place after many years and enjoy every aspect of the visit.

Margaret

Margaret

Lisa is a very intense seductive teenager. She goes to a private school. She lives with her stage actor mother and younger brother .Mother cares about her children but is never home. Her job requires her to work in the evenings. Lisa can ‘fly off the handle’ at anything. She is often loud and speaks her mind. She is flirtatious beyond her years. In many ways she is more mature than her classmates and in other ways she is still a young kid. She wears her skirt so short (really short) and thinks nothing of being flirtatious with the boys in her class as well as her teachers. Anna Paquin plays the role of Lisa. She is the total picture and quite amazing.
I did enjoy the classroom scenes. There are several discussions amongst the students on political topics. The discussions are a reflection of what is happening throughout the world. One young girl is from Syria and she has a different perspective on the Arab population from many of the other students. Lisa and the Arab student have very strong screaming matches. They get into fights on the Middle East situation as well as yelling out their opinion about terrorists. The students sit in a circle and the discussions are loud and fearful.
The classroom situation seems rather informal at times. Matt Damon has a small role as the math teacher. He isn’t on the screen for a long time but his relationship with Lisa is very powerful. We see Lisa at her most flirtatious self and view the teacher as weak and not taking charge. Mathew Broderick is the English teacher. He reads a poem to the class. It is this poem that gives the title to the film. (Very obscure)
Lisa flirts with a bus driver on her way home from school. He is actually driving and she runs after the bus calling out to him. There is an accident and a woman is killed. Lisa cradles the dying woman in her arms. Initially Lisa lies to the police and tells them the light was green when the bus crossed the road.
She is troubled by the accident and by her lying. It all begins to affect her behavior. She gets into constant fights with her mother. She yells out at the students during discussion in class. She does drugs and tempts several of the young boys. We witness her first sexual encounter.
She realizes that she has made a mistake and tries to locate the dead woman’s family. Lisa goes to the police to give her latest version of the accident and tries to get the driver fired.
The story is about the trauma in Lisa’s life and how she goes about trying to repair the damage to her soul as well as the family of the dead woman.
It is an excellent cast. I found the story very upsetting. It is certainly not a feel good story but I did have to admire the production.

Black Skirt

Black Skirt 974 College St (at Dovercourt) 416 532 7424

A gem! A winner! A great new find!
Black Skirt is named after the grandmothers in Sicily who wear black clothes in memory of loved ones. Agata Decina and Rosa Galle are the owners and chefs. They are not professionally trained in Sicilian culinary art but practice the recipes handed down by their family and friends, Trust me. They know how to cook in the Sicilian style
This is one bustling place. You have to have a reservation. The front of the restaurant houses two large tables. Both were full with a large group. The long bar takes up one side of the restaurant. The other side of the room houses large wooden cupboards and shelves filled with exotic goodies from Sicily. A variety of canned of vegetables. flour, pastas, olive oil and condiments offers great ideas for gifts. Fresh prepared foods and cheeses are also available for take out.
We enjoyed viewing the operations of the open kitchen while waiting for our food to be prepared. We also did a lot of chatting back and forth. What a perfect combination for an evening, great company and superb food,
This is such a friendly place. Kit, our server, was very busy but was so willing to answer all our questions. Apparently the restaurant has only been opened since January. It was packed and apparently it is always crowded. There is a buzz in the air.
Three friends were dining on this occasion. We were starving and ready for a feast. We shared two salads. They arrived in an enormous white bowl. Each salad was sufficient for 4 persons. The Arugula Salad ($6.95) was lightly refreshed with tasty vinaigrette. Shavings of delicious cheese enhanced the peppery taste of the fresh greens. The Beet and Spinach Salad ($8.95) was also totally enjoyed. The greens tasted as if they had just been picked. The beets had been roasted and were perched on the side of the bowl.
While enjoying the salads we devoured the scrumptious bread. We dipped the bread in the superb sauce served in an olive wood bowl. The sauce was composed of extra virgin olive oil, garlic, basil and tomatoes. You are told to mash the concoction with the pestle to free the flavors.
It was beyond delicious. We were so content with our choices. The young couple beside us was celebrating a birthday. They told us that their food was also ‘spiritual’.
The pastas were served al dente and the flavoring was absolutely perfect. The Sicilian Pasta was prepared with spaghetti, tomatoes, pine nuts, raisins, fresh white anchovies, olive oil, basil and dill.($15.95) One pasta dish was flavored with aioli. Fretta Pasta is an offering of spaghetti tossed with ricotta and parmigiano cheese.($10.95)
I enjoyed the Shrimp from the Antipasto list.($10.95) Pan seared shrimp were served in a spicy pizzaioli sauce with grilled Italian bread. This was supposed to be an appetizer. There were 5 very large perfectly flavored shrimp.
Panini selections included one prepared with Veal or Chicken and served with mushrooms and a sweet tomato sauce.($11.95)
Main courses are served after 5:00p.m. Osso Buco, a house specialty, is served with potatoes.($25.00)
Black Skirt opens in the morning for breakfast or lunch. It is open from Monday to Saturday. Charming! Delicious! It is almost as good as being in Sicily.

Circumstance

Circumstance

This is a daring creative film. The film maker, Maryam Keshavarz, was born in Iran and later lived in the United States. It was filmed in Lebanon. I still am amazed that they were able to make this film. It certainly could never have been produced in Iran. Just recently I read that two major film makers have been arrested in Iran. The topics here are too controversial for that country .The film won the Audience Choice award at Sundance.
Atafeh and Shireen are two teen age friends. Atafeh is from a middle class liberal family. The parents are professors. They are still very much in love. They have a good standard of living. They drink and have parties.
Shireen is from a more traditional background.
The two girls have a relationship. They always have their heads covered in public. It is almost shocking to see them at the underground clubs they attend. The dancing is sensual and provocative. They drink, take drugs and smoke.
They are stopped by the morality police and taken to jail. The family is able to get the girls out of jail. Shireen is examined by male police to see if she is a virgin.
Shireen’s uncle forces her to marry to protect her name. She marries Atafeh’s brother who has fancied her. He is devoutly religious and doesn’t allow her to play the piano or dance even with the family. Obviously there is conflict in the family between the two girls who were former lovers. Shireen is stunning to look at. At first she is horrified at the fact of marrying. Atafeh cannot accept the marriage at all.
The marriage scene is beautiful to watch. In fact all the cinematography is exquisite. The camera lingers on a shot and you feel the emotion involved in the scene.
There is music throughout the film. Atafeh’s family enjoys the piano. At the club raucous music blares. The music seems to be telling the story.
The repression of women in this society is clearly portrayed. There is also a lot of hypocrisy. The police are paid off. The girls act one way on the street. They are wild and out of control on the dance floor of the club. They are sensual and loving in bed with each other.
This is a daring film and it strikes an emotional note. The political overtones are present. The interpersonal trauma between the girls and amongst the family is very striking.
This is a powerful film and the young writer/ director has a great future before her.

What's Your Number

What’s Your Number

This film is not very funny and certainly is not an original idea. It is a romantic comedy that is so predictable I even guessed the ending. Anna Faris plays the part of Ally and she does an admirable job.
Ally has had a lot of lovers. In fact she has admitted to 19. She read an article stating that if a woman has more than 20 love matches she will likely remain single.
Ally gets concerned that she is getting to the end of her list and so she decides to look back at her past lovers to see if she can reconnect with one of them. At first I thought the concept would be fun. And who doesn’t want a little more laughter in one’s life?
Ally has a gorgeous male neighbor. He seems to have more women than even Ally. Every morning he comes to hide in her apartment pretending to be at work until the last evening’s ‘floozy’ leaves. Ally connects with Colin as a good friend. He tries to help her find all those lost 19 men.
There is certainly some humor in looking back on one’s past lovers. It is fun to see how they have changed.
Dave the magician seems to be as annoying as he was in the past. The gay senator actually wants to marry her so that he looks good with his constituency.
Colin works tirelessly to help Ally. You can guess the ending. They really are adorable together. There is a funny scene where they sneak into a basketball court and try to throw the ball into the hoop. If they miss they need to remove a piece of clothing. They both certainly have perfect bodies.
The best line in the film is stated by Ally,” I’m a jobless whore who has slept with 20 guys.”
There is a little more to the plot. Ally’s sister is getting married. We go through the delight of watching her choose her gown. The wedding ceremony and party do provide some humor. Ally’s mother is played by Blythe Danner. Isn’t she Gwyneth Paltrow’s real mother?
I felt empty and disappointed when I left. I think the young actors have talent but the film was a piece of ‘fluff’ and left me wanting something more substantial.

Starbuck

Starbuck.

It has nothing to do with coffee. I had crossed this film from my must see list because I thought the idea of a sperm donor providing for 533 children was silly madness. I was severely chastised by members of my exercise class. They told me it was an entertaining, funny and delightful film. They were so correct.
Starbuck was a pseudonym used by David Wozniac, the sperm donor. He believed that confidentiality was guaranteed. David looks like he needs a good shave. He is in debt. He drives a truck delivering meat for his father’s butchering business. His father constantly tells him he does his job poorly. Many would label him as a loser.
David has an attractive pregnant girlfriend. He just doesn’t appear to be the ‘father like ‘material.
An envelope is delivered to David containing pictures and facts from all the recipients of his sperm. Apparently there is going to be a law suit and the children are seeking him out. At first he throws the package away. On second thought he looks at one of the pictures. He follows it up and observes a want to be actor working in a coffee shop. He helps him out in a situation.
He turns over another paper and finds a young lady hooked on drugs. He goes to her defense and gets her out of rehab. He gives her the confidence she was lacking. Over and over again he meets the young people he secretly fathered. He makes an impact on their lives. He is especially proud of the famous soccer player. David also plays soccer and you can imagine him thinking that his genes have created this soccer star. He gives money to a street musician and encourages others on the street o donate.
More importantly he begins to change. He becomes softer and more worthy. At one point he states,” I have never been so happy in my life.”
There is so much humor. His lawyer pal is very funny and adds much to the story.
David is threatened with a court case. He is called a pervert. He hears people talking about Starbuck, not knowing it is really David. He hears someone say,” Imagine being known as Sergeant Pecker all your life.” Even his own father calls him ‘El Masturbator’
The group of young people comes to his aid as he had done for them.
The story is touching. I enjoyed watching the character development. The French Canadian film industry produces many fine films. This is another one worth watching. Apparently it did win an award at the Toronto Film Festival 2011.

Pizza e Pazzi

Pizza e Pazzi 1182 St Clair Ave West 647 352 7882

This restaurant is the latest authentic Neopolitan pizza restaurant in the city. It requires special training and papers to certify the chef in preparing this style of pizza. The pizza cooks in less than a minute. It is delicious and available with many toppings.
This is a charming venue. At the front of the restaurant the natural brick walls are exposed. At the back of the dark grey walls and the large mirrors offer a sophisticated tone. We loved this place at first sight. We were warmly greeted. The attention and service was excellent.
This was a special celebration. Alex and I try to dine out weekly. We both love pizza and I promised him a pizza feast before he heads out to the Banff School Of Music next week. He plans to study, compose and play his jazz guitar for the nest 12 weeks. I can’t tell you how much I will miss him. His mother, Kathy, has just had a knee replacement less than 2 weeks ago. She did valiant duty to even attempt this outing. I don’t know how she did it. It was so wonderful to have the family together with Alex’s delightful beautiful girlfriend, Val.
While waiting for my guests to arrive I had a chance to chat with Ian, our server. We valued his wine recommendation. He also informed us of the most popular pizza and dessert choices. He told me this is a new restaurant and I could see it is thriving. All the staff is from Italy. The foccacia bread is home made and so delicious. Even though we knew we were having pizza we ate three servings of that fantastic bread. The bottles of olive oil and the balsamic vinegar are of the highest quality.
Pizza Rosse choices are prepared with a san marzano tomato base. The Margherita Verace is one of the most popular. It is served with extra virgin oil, mozzarella di buffalo dop and basil.($13.00) Diavola is topped with spicy salami, basil, extra virgin olive oil and Ontario fior di latte.($14.00) My Vegetariana featured grilled eggplant, zucchini, peppers and basil. The fior di latte cheese and extra virgin olive oil made it creamy, tasty and so delicious.($14.75) The Ai Tre Funghi Trifolati offered three kinds of wild mushrooms, pepper and fior di latte.($19.00) Napoletana is a house favorite with anchovies, black olives, mozzarella di bufala dop and basil.($14.75)
We shared a tasting of each pizza. Some of the pizzas were covered with fresh arugula. I love to eat my salad on the pizza. We all agreed that every pizza was delicious. Don’t forget to ask for the hot and spicy olive oil. It really brings out the flavors.
Pizze Bianche is prepared with a white base. Valtellina is topped with bresaola, baby arugula, extra virgin olive oil, shaved parmagiano and a splash of lemon juice and basil.($19.75)
Gamberetti e Rucola offers shrimps, arugula, cocktail sauce and extra virgin olive oil.($19.75)
Pasta dishes are also offered on the menu. Pasta Alla Carbonara is prepared with spaghetti in a creamy egg sauce with gran padano, pancetta and black pepper.($14.00)
Gnocchi, Gamberetti E Zucchine sounds so delicious with shrimp and zucchini tossed in an extra virgin olive oil and finished with a touch of san marzano tomato sauce.($!4.00)
The Tiramisu Con Fragole was served in a large stemmed glass. The strawberry puree and zambaione cream was served between layers of savoiandi biscuits topped with strawberries Yummy! It was a great evening of delicious food enjoyed with the family.

A Matter of Taste: Serving up Paul Liebrandt

A Matter Of Taste: Serving Up Paul Liebrandt

Foodies everywhere note this film. Your eyes and stomach will be feasted. It is a glorious story of success and the challenge to be star in the culinary arts. I’m not even sure I would want to taste the concoctions created by Paul Liebrandt but I certainly loved looking at the aesthetics. Chocolate covered scallops, bacon sorbet and mackerel tartare are not on my list of foods to try.
This film was made over many years. We see the young creative chef rising in his career. He was born in Rhodesia and raised in England. He attended boarding schools and claims there was no love for that horrible food. He was trained by classical French chefs
He strives for a relationship between flavors. A ball of apple sorbet is beautifully plated. He then pours olive oil over the concoction. The verdict was superb but I don’t plan to try it in the near future.
Paul was the youngest chef to get 3 stars for his outstanding gourmet cuisine. He talks about starting from a classical base and then ‘tweaks’ a little change and leaves a little something out. He loves the buzz in the kitchen.
Paul does not yell and scream. He never throws anything at this staff. He is intense and very serious. He also had a sense of humor and often had a smile on his face. We see the difficult challenge in working in a top line restaurant. The staff works over 12 hours daily. There is no time for a social life. Paul does eventually find a lovely woman who works the front of his restaurant. She is a great balance for his intensity.
He was a 2 star chef at Gilt in New York City. A critic wrote that there were too many layers to his food. He later was fired.
He had a job for a short while creating cocktails. That was fun to watch and I was craving a sample.
He finds a backer who totally supports him and that is the beginning of Corton. We see all the action in creating the physical space. The chefs work to create the menu. I was fascinated to see how many people actually worked behind the scenes.
The tension builds as the restaurant prepares to open. There is one goal and that is to achieve three stars from the restaurant critic Frank Bruni. The staff is always alert when checking the reservation listings. Frank Bruni uses pseudonyms. When he does come to the restaurant he tries to catch them doing something wrong. He leaves a towel on the floor of the washroom. He also leaves a paper clip on the sink. I sighed in relief when these errors were caught.
There is so much passion in the creation of exquisite food. The audience feels it while watching the film.
I can actually say I was not hungry when I left the film because many of the dishes were majestic to look at but personally would not be something I would want to eat. I still enjoyed watching a master at work It was fascinating to see the interviews with other award winning chefs and food critics. I marvel at the patience and preciseness of the film maker in taking this journey with Paul Liebrandt.
I am so grateful to the TIFF Bell Lightbox for showing so many creative unusual films. This is definitely a winner.

Via Norte

Via Norte 938 College St 647 348 1116

If I was a condemned person asked to order my last meal it would be my favorite Grilled Tuna at Via Norte. There is nothing like it. I crave it. I salivate thinking about it and need to have a ‘fix’ on a regular basis.
Jose Alves is a master chef and the owner. The other Jose, the manager, does an equally fine job making the clientele feel at home. He is charming and knowledgeable about the food. Both are masterful at their job.
Jose is skilled in preparing all the fantastic food featuring Portuguese dishes. I like to observe what people are eating. On this last visit I went with two friends also devotees of Via Norte. We sat next to a large family who really seemed to know Portuguese food. In fact they told us they dine here often. One even drives from a far suburb for this delectable food. They were enjoying a casserole dish of meat and clams in a most flavorful aromatic sauce.
The Portuguese bread is crusty and delicious. Pour a little extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar and you will find you can’t stop eating it. The home cured black olives also add a great touch before you have even ordered.
I personally never look at the menu. I even tell them on the phone that I would like Tuna for dinner. Two large tuna steaks are beautifully cooked to perfection. The flavor is superb and you can cut it with a fork. There are so many vegetables included on the dish. I ate all the rapini and broccoli. Rounds of potato and sweet potato were so tasty. The white beans were devoured in no time. This portion is sufficient for 2 people but I ate every bit. I couldn’t move but I didn’t care. My friend R also quickly demolished this perfect dish.
R’s husband G, ordered the Grilled Tiger Shrimp and Seared Sea Scallops served with a rice pilaf flavored with dry vermouth and saffron. Needless to say it was spectacular.
I am so excited to see that starting the first week in October there will be a Fix Price menu to celebrate Via Norte’s 1st year anniversary. Three courses will be offered for $30.00. For $50.00 you can also enjoy a wine sampling with each course. For the first offering you have three choices.
Butterfly Grilled Portuguese Sardines, marinated in fresh garlic, coriander, chili flakes are topped with chives and tomato salad. Punheta de Bacalhau is a ceviche of shredded cod salted and tossed with a julienne of roasted peppers, red onions, olives, parsley and extra virgin olive oil. Mildly Spiced Grilled Portuguese Chourico is flamed with Portuguese grappa.
Main courses offer my favorite Pan Seared Yellow Fin Tuna, Pan roasted Fillet Mignon or a Mixed Seafood Risotto. Main courses are accompanied by a selection of steamed vegetables, tossed with extra virgin olive oil.
Don’t stop there. Save room for the Tahitian Vanilla Panna Cotta or The Dark Chocolate Tart served with fresh berries.
The regular menu offers a large variety of dishes. The Herb Crusted Salmon and Pan Seared Tenderloin are just a few of the delectable entrée choices. Salads and Appetizers are plentiful and also make for lighter fare dining.
Sometimes I choose a table by the fireplace in the upper front room. I also have a favorite table near the bar facing the library shelves with all the fine wine. It doesn’t matter where you sit. You will enjoy fine food and great service. That is why I continue to come back.
