True Grit

True Grit

I will see any film directed (and written) by Joel and Ethan Coen. They are truly unique. They have adapted the book by the same name.

There are two main stars in this wonderful western. The young Hailee Steinfeld plays a 14 year old Mattie Ross. She almost steals the show and will definitely be nominated for an Oscar. She does share the accolades with Jeff Bridges who will probably also be nominated for his role as the tough, drinking, trigger happy Cogburn. You can hardly understand a word he says because he mumbles and seems to grunt between clenched teeth. He is brilliant in his acting.

The film opens with a quote from Proverbs, ”The wicked flee when non pursued.”

The wicked are indeed pursued big time in this western. Mattie goes to town to claim her father’s body. He was killed by one of his workers for 2 gold pieces and a horse. Mattie is a 14 year old child. She is so adorable with her long braids. She is also a smooth talker with a fierce determination. She is going to bring the killer to justice. She spends the night in a funeral home with 3 dead bodies because she didn’t have the funds for a hotel.

She bargains with a horseman to buy a horse and beats him at his own game.

She hires Cogburn to trace the killer. He is not prepared when she announces she is going with him. It was humorous and also touching to see the old curmudgeon with this fast talking young girl head out in the wilds of Indian territory to pursue a killer.

The film takes us on a rough ride. They face trials and tribulations at every turn. Poor Mattie faces a snake bite after falling into a large sunken hole. She is taken by Cogburn on the ride of her life as he dashes to get help. Even the horse can’t maintain that speed and Cogburn runs carrying the ill Mattie. At one point her adversary has his foot on her head and a gun faced toward her. She overcomes all her problems.

The film is fun but there are also the typical bloody scenes one expects in a western. There are hangings and shootings. I didn’t even have to cover my eyes because it is all handled in a way that was manageable.

It is a western so you know that it will all end up with the ‘good guys’ winning. Matt Damon plays the role of another cowboy, La Boeuf, who encounters the wrath of Cogburn. I found it rather humorous when he rides off on his horse with a visible bullet hole in the back of his jacket. His tongue is almost severed but he manages to talk in the next scenario.

The cinematography is wonderful. I loved the scene of Cogburn and Mattie riding their horses into the wild lands. They are seen in shadow and it is a beautiful sight. The music is sow ell suited to highlight the drama. Apparently the score was based on 19th century Protestant hymns.

This is an entertaining film well produced and well acted. It is a stellar cast. You are in for a good ride.

Barney's Version

Barney’s Version

I was invited to join a group of friends for a coffee after the yoga class. I hope I wasn’t rude. I quickly declined because I was heading for the first showing on the first day of this most anticipated film. It was meant to open the Toronto Film Festival but this year the festival opened on a Jewish holiday. There was no way this film, with so much Jewish content, could be the opener. Instead the film went to the Venice Film Festival. It has received a great deal of publicity. Robert Lantos produced this noteworthy film .It is very well done and will certainly get a few nods for awards this season.

I love the writings of Mordecai Richler and eagerly anticipated this film based on his last novel.

Paul Giamatti is an interesting choice to play Barney. At times I was troubled with his paunchy look, bulging eyes and lack of hair. He is certainly not the matinee idol look. That is what makes him even more interesting. He plays the role of a man who was married three times. He always had an eye for the women. He constantly drank and always had a cigar in his mouth. Yet, when he spoke his voice was so gentle and he became almost loveable.

He was a true character. The film shows us some of his early life and takes us on a journey until his demise. His father is played by Dustin Hoffman. Barney and his father had such a loving relationship and seemed to truly understand each other.

Barney ran a company called Totally Unecessary Productions.

His family life was often very funny and at times really sad. His first wife committed suicide and you couldn’t help but be relieved that she was out of the picture. She totally used him.

He marries a rich Jewish girl for the second round. It was worth the price of admission to see the wedding scene. He constantly has a cigar in his mouth. He drinks too much and keeps running to catch the latest score of the games being played. The ink isn’t dry on the marriage certificate when he meets Miriam who becomes the love of his life. He eventually marries her and for many years does have a happy relationship.

We see the marriage begin to deteriorate. Miriam wants to go back to work as an announcer. Her boss is interested in her. The marriage breaks up but Barney keeps pining away for her. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when he phones up Miriam’s new lover at 3:00 a.m. He asks him if he wants the nude photos of Miriam so he will know what she used to look like. He is so overcome with jealousy and can’t cope without her.

As his health begins to deteriorate Miriam does come to visit him. It is such a sweet sensitive meeting.

There is a sub plot about the death of one of Barney’s old friends. A police detective keeps appearing on the scene. He seems determined to ‘finger’ Barney as possibly being responsible. I felt that this part of the story was not developed and was almost irritating when little segments were presented. I either needed more information about it or wished it hadn’t been presented.

Barney could be irritating, rude and obnoxious. He also was a loving person with a lot of charm. That is what makes the story so interesting.

Best of all were the songs sung by Leonard Cohen. This is a delightful film filled with every emotion. It is a great story about a fascinating character.

Banjara

Banjara Indian Cuisine 796 Bloor St West 416 963 9360

My grandson was celebrating his birthday. We had already had a fine dinner in honor of the occasion. On the actual day I heard that his parents had gone north to the cabin and he was alone for dinner. I couldn’t stand the thought of him dining alone on his birthday. Nana to the rescue. We both love Indian food and knew that we were in for a fine feast.

Banjara is one of my favorite places for one of my favorite types of food. I enjoy the aroma and love the burst of flavor from the mélange of spices and herbs.

There is parking in front. The service is always so friendly. I always comment on the number of staff. The food is prepared very quickly. The flavor is amazing. The price is affordable. I have dined here many times before and always am delighted and satisfied. It is my favorite Indian food place in town.

We were starving so we ordered the Veggie Pakora to get us started. The chick pea batter coated deep fried crispy vegetable fritters were a delight on the palate. ($3.95) It was a large order and we demolished them in no time. We did consider the Veggie Samosa.($2.95) 2 patties are stuffed with lightly spiced vegetables and deep fried. The Onion Bhajia is a gourmet delight. ($3.50) The deep fried onion fritters are such a delight.

Indian food makes for a great feast. Order several dishes and share the feast. We ordered the Shrimp Dopiazza ($12.95). Large succulent shrimp were cooked with caramelized onions and spices. It was great. We barely spoke English as we were ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ our way through these succulent dishes.

I insisted that my grandson have an order of his favorite Butter Chicken.($10.99) This is a signature dish at the restaurant. The chicken Tikka is simmered in tomato, onion and cream gravy. This dish was the first to be finished in record time.

An order of Naan was necessary to soak up the flavors of the sauces. Naan is a traditional Indian bread baked in the tandoor method.($1.95) A variety of types of Naan are available. Garlic Naan, Keema Naan, Cheese Naan are just a few of the offerings.

My favorite dish is always the Palak Paneer. ($8.99) It is the best at Banjara. Pureed spinach is served with cubes of the homemade cottage cheese. I always feel so virtuous as I enjoy this dish. I also love the flavor. Aloo Korma is prepared with potatoes steamed and cooked in yogurt, tomato, spices and herbs.($9.50) It is always delicious healthy food.

We were licking our lips watching the patrons at the next table demolish an order of Tandoori Chicken.(half $10.95. full $16.95) If you have never tasted a tandoori prepared food it is a must for 2011. The food is cooked in a traditional Indian clay oven with charcoal and the food is rubbed with a fragrant delicious mixture of spices and herbs

Tandoori Cauliflower is one of my favorite.($8.95) The florets of the cauliflower are marinated and cooked in the tandoor.

As I think of the lovely evening with my grandson I find my appetite whetted for more of this traditional exotic food (and more time with my grandson)

Bodega

Bodega 30 Baldwin St 416 977 1287

I so look forward to the festive season. One of the highlights is the annual lunch hosted by a loyal dear friend. Every year she invites around 25 stimulating women for a festive lunch. Can you imagine! I so look forward to the event. The past two years have been at Bodega and I hope I will receive many more invites in the future to attend the Christmas lunch at this same place.

Bodega is situated on a busy block of Baldwin St. Many different types of restaurants are housed on both sides of the street. It is a charming street and worth the trip to walk up and down viewing all the establishments. Bodega has been in operation in Toronto for many years and is well known for its delicious French style food. It is situated in an old house. The main floor has two rooms. I have always enjoyed the homey atmosphere. The servers are exceptional. They did a masterful job of feeding 25 guests at the same time.

On this occasion we had a three course lunch with several options.

The Chilled Calamari was prepared with a lemon, basil and pine nut dressing. Several guests at my table enjoyed that appetizer. Others opted for the Creamy Mushroom Soup. I chose the Hearts Of Romaine with croutons, Parmesan cheese and garlic anchovy dressing. Everybody was delighted with their choice.

I should mention the warm multigrain bread that was at each table. Delicious.

The main entrée offered three choices. One guest chose the Seafood Bouillabaise It had an amazing aroma and apparently the flavor was superb. The saffron fennel tomato broth contained shrimp, scallops and market fish. Emmenthal cheese and rouille completed this gourmet creation.

Grilled Chicken Breast with a rosemary walnut dressing was the popular choice at my table. It looked very tender and the roasted sweet potatoes and squash looked so appetizing. I opted for the Vegetarian Tower. It was a work of art. Grilled Portabella mushroom, zucchini, eggplant, red pepper, spinach and goat cheese were topped with sundried tomato and basil dressing. The best!

Nobody needed dessert but on such an occasion you enjoy the total package. Vanilla Crème Brulee was creamy, rich and tasty. The Warm Banana Cake was served with toffee sauce and crème anglaise. It looked so inviting. I opted for the Fresh Berries with Ice cream. It was the perfect conclusion to a superb meal.

We enjoyed this special luncheon as a guest of our very generous hostess.

The regular menu has so many choices and they all sound divine. Panko Crusted Blue Crab Cakes are served with tomato Provencal sauce and caper-cream.($12.00) Roasted Beets are prepared with blue d’avernge, walnuts and an orange-garlic ginger dressing.($9.00)

Brie Cheese Omelette is served with frites or salad ($12.00) Grilled Atlantic Salmon is prepared with French lentils, tomato, capers, olives and an Ouzo butter sauce.($15.00)

Raised Lamb shank is served with mashed potato and a prune, cranberry rosemary sauce.($16.00)

Currently a Lunch Prix Fixe Menu is being offered at $20.00. There are several choices of appetizer, entrée and desert. This is a fine deal.

The menu is very authentic French. The service is superb. The food is exquisite.

Aunties and Uncles

Aunties And Uncles 74 Lippincott St 416 324 1375

I have wanted to go to this restaurant for a long time. Now I am angry with myself that I waited so long. This is the festive season and I started my day right by enjoying this delicious delightful fun spot.

The restaurant has been here for 11 years. It was probably an old house many years ago. It is a few steps north of College St. with a patio area for summer weather. There are no more than 7 tables on the first floor. The tables are old kitchen tables with formica tops. The old map of Ontario looks like it has been around longer than the province. Old family photos are on the wall. The kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant. Two beautiful young ladies work non stop in the smallest kitchen I have ever seen. There is literally room for only two people to stand in one spot. They can’t even move around each other. I loved watching them at work. They were calm. They were organized. They were efficient and obviously they know how to prepare delicious brunch and lunch food. The place is only open during the day.

David was our server. He also owns this delightful place. He was patient and very charming. He was also very busy. I didn’t see any other servers. How was he able to be so pleasant and so busy?

I have a special friend who delights in trying small restaurants and old diners. She was the perfect companion for this restaurant. We both started with a Cup of Beet Borscht. There was no mistaking that this was home made. It was filled with grated beets. The flavor was full bodied and it was served hot. I tasted lemon that balanced the flavor of the beets.($2.75)

We shared a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. ($7.50) Usually it is served on Challah bread. We asked for whole wheat and it was not a problem. Old Canadian Cheddar was grilled to perfection and filled with sliced tomatoes. We had the option of home fries, salad or potato salad. We opted for the salad. I couldn’t believe the amount we were served. The mixed greens were so fresh and the vinaigrette was perfect.

I am almost embarrassed to say that we also shared an order of Banana Pancakes. They were the best. I can’t even describe the sound I made when that first bite melted in my mouth. It was an amazing flavorful dish.

A Grilled Brie Sandwich is prepared with chutney and apple.($8.25)

I was tempted with the Chick Pea Salad with green Thai curry and dried mango. It is also served with their famous home made potato salad. I hear it is delicious.($7.50) The Omelette Of The Day featured tomato, leeks and goat cheese.($8.25) It also comes with a bagel, fruit, salad or potatoes.

A good breakfast item is the Granola with Fruit and Maple Syrup.($7.50)

I loved watching the food being prepared. I loved watching the dishes being presented to the hungry clients. I was fascinated with our server’s efficient warm manner.

We both agreed that the food was special and it was such a fun experience.

Universal Grill

Universal Grill 1071 Shaw St (at Dupont) 416 588 5928

It was my grandson’s birthday. I wanted it to be delicious food, charming atmosphere and distinctive. Universal Grill is a superb restaurant. It was a former old diner situated in a in a quiet neighborhood. I remember well when Universal Grill first opened. I was the first to doubt that it could succeed in this quiet part of Dupont St so far from all the ‘classy restaurants’. How wrong I was. Universal Grill has been crowded since the day it opened. It is currently open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday. Saturday and Sunday a superb brunch is offered. A reservation is a must because the place is so small.

I love the dark tin ceiling. The dark green walls and the long bar with tools reminds me of what it once looked like. At the same time it is upbeat with new touches. The black refrigerator at the end of the bar is a real conversation piece. A picture of the original diner is posted over the bar. This is not a large restaurant. There are about 7 tables and a few stools at the bar.

The best part is the tempting menu and outstanding food. They are most noted for their ribs and have won awards for this tasty dish.

Three of the guests opted for the Ribs. They shared 2 orders of Original Ribs.($25.00) They are slow stewed and served with a BBQ sauce. The yam frites were really enjoyed. The Rajah Dry Ribs are prepared with a spicy dry rub.($25.00) The portions were very generous and the ribs were declared to be a winner.

I ordered the Special Linguini with various types of mushrooms, red pepper and rapini. The goats cheese added to the wonderful flavor.($18.00) I was tempted with the Oven Baked Rigatoni with eggplant, rapini, peppers, mushrooms, roasted garlic and Asiago cheese. Sounds so delicious.

We asked our server for the most favorite choices. After the ribs the Rosemary Roast Chicken is the choice.($!9.00) It is served with serious gravy ands scalloped potatoes.

On a past visit I enjoyed the Crispy Polenta.($10.00) It is prepared with mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, capers, olives and goat cheese.($10.00) I also can recommend the Warm Portobello Salad with spinach and shaved Parmesan.($9.00)

The Tortilla Spring Rolls are served with a sweet and hot mango dipping sauce.($8.00)

I have enjoyed 2 appetizers as a dinner choice. I have shared appetizers and then enjoyed an entrée. No matter how you choose the items from the menu you are guaranteed a feast.

Nobody had room for dessert but it was a birthday celebration and I insisted we try something from the menu. The Warm Chocolate Brownie was the winner. Oh my goodness! It was the best. It was like eating warm chocolate sauce with ice cream. We all loved it.

What a magnificent dinner!. It always is when I dine here. What a lovely place to celebrate my grandson’s birthday.

Grapefruit Moon

Grapefruit Moon 961 Bathurst St 416 539 9056

What a whimsical name! What a fun place! I don’t have words enough o describe the experience. The place is alive and busy with neighbors from this interesting area of town. I so enjoyed watching the lovely mother with her three children. Each boy was reading a book. One son looked to be about 9 years of age. He was reading The Marquis De Sade. They all ate like perfect gentlemen. Another family was having lunch and the kids were busily playing with their giraffes, elephants and toy trucks. I wanted to ask who the young couples were that had time on a Monday to lunch together. The place was full.

The knick knacks around are so much fun. Many of the pictures will bring a big smile to your face. I loved the colorful clock that had the letters FUN around the face. Even the server seemed to be from another time. Would you believe some children came in just to say hello to him. I remarked that it was so nice that his family stopped by to say hello. He told me they were children from the area. He seemed to be the only server around and was so friendly and had time to answer all our questions. He was great. I loved this friendly restaurant and wanted to soak up all the atmosphere.

I was so glad I was with a very dear friend who also admitted that this was a unique experience in dining. I am happy to report that the menu is also fun and creative. Our food was so delicious and I just can’t wait to go back.

I love Grilled Cheese Sandwiches( $9.25) but don’t indulge very often. We had the option of four different types of bread. We chose the rye brad and it was so perfect with the flavors of the ingredients. Tomato slices, avocado and onion were added to the grilled cheese to make this a home styled mighty good feed. I opted out of the fries and had the best mixed green salad. The dressing had a lot of mustard and it was amazing. My friend opted for a hot bowl of home made Chicken Noodle Soup to go with the same sandwich.

The Vegan Wrap is filled with hummus, black bean, tomato, carrots, onion, cucumber, sprouts and greens.($9.00)

The lady at the next table was enjoying a large plate with a Veggie Burger, fries and a salad. I already know that will be my choice for next time.

The Brie and Red Pepper Omelette was also calling out to me($9.00) It is served with fries and toast. The Cheddar & Peameal Omelette is $9.00)

Quesadillas are plentiful on the menu offering a variety of tasty fillings.($10.00)

I want to meet Sandy Moon, the owner. I am told that she has four children and still manages to run this restaurant.

We found the food to be very tasty. The menu is creative. I loved the energy in this fun filled establishment. I ate my meal with great pleasure and a big smile on my face.

Sell Out

Sell Out

Wacky! Different! Over the top!

I set out to see the film The Tourist. I was actually in the auditorium waiting for the picture to begin. I kept thinking that I really didn’t want to see this film. I was reading the little brochure put out by the Carleton Theatre and noted that Sell Out was about to begin in a different auditorium. I was curious because it is a Malaysian film and I have never seen one from that country.

The whole film is a parody on reality TV. One of the main characters stated that there is a fine line between reality and fiction. That pretty much sums up the plot of this ridiculous story.

The main character is an announcer on a reality program. The characters are bizarre and ridiculous. The announcer is always looking for new ideas for programs to please her bosses.

She comes up with the idea of a reality program catching a person as they are dying. She had visited an ex boyfriend in the hospital and taped it as he was dying. She was heartless and ruthless to the young man. The program was such a success that she went about to find people on their death bed and she taped it.

It sounds ridiculous and callous. It certainly was both.

When she couldn’t find a dying person she stages a program with two young men at a large Asian banquet. The audience sent in e-mails to decide which man had to die. It was all on film.

It did point out how ridiculous most of the reality programs are. Sometimes you need to see something ‘over the top’ to make the point.

Several of the characters break out into singing. The songs are about the situations. Her ex boyfriend sings a poem about his love for the announcer. He chokes on his last words and literary dies.

The picture certainly is creative. I did have a few laughs. I also could have done without seeing it all.

I, Don Giovanni

I, Don Giovanni

The TIFF Bell Lightbox never fails. The films are consistently the best in the city. I never read a review before going and I have not once been disappointed.

Before seeing the film I viewed the Tim Burton Art exhibit. It is masterful and so creative. Pictures, multi media and sculptures from this zany creative artist are now on exhibit until April. It is a must visit. I was totally enamored with the whole collection.

If you like opera and period costumes you will thoroughly enjoy this film. Visually it is superb. I predict an Oscar nomination for the costumes. The salon scenes are fantastic. The scenes in Venice are a work of art. I especially loved the street scene during Carnival. The music is splendid throughout.

We first meet Lorenzo da Ponte as a child at his baptism. He had been Jewish and was converting to Catholicism. He became a poet and a priest. He obviously was far too interested in the ladies to remain faithful to the church. In fact he was expelled from Venice and goes to Vienna.

In Vienna he is introduced to the famous musician, Salieri, by his good friend Casanova. Salieri tries to play a trick on his friend Mozart by suggesting he hire the librettist da Ponte.

Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte work together to write the opera Don Giovanni. Mozart is inspired by Lorenzo da Ponte and the two make a great team. The music of Mozart is splendid and the libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte is often risqué and lots of fun. Many of the ideas for the libretto come from life experiences of Lorenzo da Ponte and Casanova.

Throughout you are treated to the magical scores of Mozart.

I did find the character of Mozart unsatisfying. Some of his actions were annoying and his ridiculous wigs were distracting.

The scenery and the costumes are aesthetically pleasing. The music kept me happy throughout the total performance.

Rabbit Hole

Rabbit Hole

I saw this film during the Toronto International Film Festival. I am still haunted by the story. Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart are superb in their roles of the grieving parents. The film has already been nominated for awards this season. It is not a happy story but it is handled so well and you do come away feeling that the characters have progressed from their deep grieving to a more tolerable stage.

I can’t imagine anything more grievous than losing a child. Becca (Nicole Kidman) and Howie (Aaron Eckhart) are the grieving parents. Their son was killed in an accident when he darted out to catch his dog. It is obvious that this had been a loving satisfied family.

Both parents grieve in different ways and it pulls them apart. She loves to tend to her garden and it shows her nurturing soul. He wants to keep all the mementos around him of his adorable son.

They try therapy but that doesn’t work for them. Somebody at the therapy group told them that God needed another angel. I am still haunted by the way Becca brittles with her response,” Why didn’t he just make one?”

When Becca’s sister announced she was pregnant I felt a pain in my stomach. I couldn’t help but empathize with how Becca must have felt.

They both seek compassion and satisfaction with different people. She becomes a friend of a young male teenager. I did have trouble really finding this believable. For a short time he seeks solace with another woman. He can’t handle it.

I felt that the major blow up between the two was a turning point and very cathartic. I almost want to go back and see it again. It is a painful story but handled so well.

Don Carlo

Don Carlo Met Opera Live in HD

I have seen many operas in the past few years. This surely was one of the best. It was five glorious hours of fine Verdi music and magnificent singing. Some of the arias are very difficult and yet the opera stars mastered every note in that demanding performance.

The very young French Canadian Conductor, Yannick Nezet-Seguin charmed everybody. Apparently he is the new darling of the music world. It was great to see him being interviewed during one of the intermissions. Several of the cast members also were interviewed. I love seeing them in a heavy dramatic role and then they step off the stage and you meet the real person in a very different personality. It is magic. You are also privileged to see many of the set changes.

I don’t know how the director was able to choreograph such a large cast. I loved the pageantry. The costumes were also great.

I think I will always remember the scene when King Phillip comes out of the golden cathedral wearing elaborate clothes. He is flanked on wither side by cardinals in flowing red costumes. The rest of the stage is filled with the Spanish people in dark somber outfits. Every note sung was perfect. It sent chills up my spine.

Don Carlo was sung by Roberto Alagna. I really enjoy all his performances.

Don Carlo is madly in love with Elisabeth De Valois. She was stately and serene and sang magnificently. Elisabeth marries Carlo’s father, King Phillip. Don Carlo is in pain and wants desperately to be with Elisabeth. He also wants to be the Flemish leader to help save the people from the terrible conditions they face. King Phillip blocks him in every move.

This is an opera so of course there has to be intrigue, drama and excitement. This opera has it all.

The encore production is on Jan 22 at 12:30 pm.

The Met Operas are shown simultaneously from New York in 30 countries. You can see the performances in any of 6 theatres in Toronto. You must purchase a seat ahead of time. The seats are so reasonable and all are reserved. You can visit the theatre ahead of time or buy a ticket on line.

Go to www.cineplex.com/events

I am already looking forward to La Fanciulla Del West on January 8 and Nixon In China on February 12.

The interviews at intermission are fascinating. The performance allows you to see every detail up close. You hear and see the best opera in the world. I couldn’t miss one performance.

Seger

Segar 1568 Bayview Ave. 416 485 1568

I set out to meet a friend on Mt Pleasant Ave. It was a cold morning. All the restaurants are closed on Monday. Of all days for me to decide to be early. I was frozen. My friend arrived promptly on the hour as planned but nothing on the street was open We drove to Bayview Ave to discover the street alive and well. I found a parking spot right in front of Segar and it beckoned for us to go in. I’m certainly glad we did.

The mustard walls are soothing and the décor is pleasant and aesthetic. Our very friendly server had such a warm smile on such a cold day. She continued to offer the best service. The food has a hint of Indian flavor but basically is international. This chef is worth watching. I found his food to be creative and delicious.

A platter of Fried Flatbread with 2 exotic dips arrived. The bread is made on the premises. It has the taste of pita but is much more flavorful. One dip was coriander and Coconut. The other was a Tomato Jam. Fantastic and we hadn’t even ordered.

We both opted for the Spice Route Express. It was a bargain at $12.00. It was savory and pleasing to the palate. We started with Artichoke Soup with pieces of orange zest. It was thick, hot and bursting with flavor. The Lightly Grilled Flatbread Wrap was filled with grilled vegetables that had a most exotic sauce. I ordered mine vegetarian style. My dining companion enjoyed the addition of duck. The Salad was on the side. Arugula is my favorite green. It is peppery and crisp. The dressing had a distinct mustard flavoring and I was later told there were crushed berries. I mopped up every dot of sauce with the tasty flatbread. The daily special is $13.00

The other Soup offered on this day was Slow Roasted Sweet Red Pepper and Prawn Bisque.($6.00) How could you go wrong?

Crab and Shrimp Fritters are served with coriander chutney and salad.($6.00)

Organic quinoa and Roasted Nuts Salad is sautéed with spinach, edamame, tomato and spiced yogurt.($13.00)

I’m coming back for the Pan Roasted Organic Salmon served with fingerling potatoes and a tomato-tamarind sauce.($15.00) New World Noodles offer a corn pasta with seasonal vegetables with a pecan-cilantro pesto.($!3.99)

Madras Curried Lamb is enhanced with the apricot basmati pilaf.($15.00)

This menu is most creative. The flavors blended so well and the result was a most pleasing gourmet experience.

Kings of Pastry

Kings Of Pastry

Absolutely magical! Fantastic! Delicious! Entertaining!

The only thing better than looking at the fantastic creative pastry would be to sample it. It was mid week and mid day but the TIFF Bell Lightbox auditorium was full. I was so happy to see it. The audience really enjoyed the film. They laughed a lot and when one of the master cakes dropped and was smashed everybody let out a very loud ‘Ahhh”.

The film shows the contest in Lyon France to select the ’Meilleurs Oeuvres de France’, an award for the highest ranking pastry chefs in the competition.

Even the President of France was in attendance. It is prestigious. It is entertaining and it is mouth watering.

16 pastry chefs were selected from many countries to try out for this award. There is not just 1 winner. The jury of judges selects any number that they feel worthy to wear the red and blue collar that signifies the very best of pastry makers.

We meet several of the pastry chefs. A lot of attention is paid to a pastry chef from Chicago. He comes with his family for the competition and I found myself rooting for him all the way. He made spectacular creations and he always had a smile on his face. During the competition he got up at 4:00 am to do preparations. His fiancée was so comforting and encouraging.

There were three days of competition and each day a different challenge. The sugar creations were absolutely amazing. They were intricate. Flowers, lace, people and sky high structures were all cast out of sugar. They were such a work of art. Each chef has to carry the creation to the final table for display. One chef loses most of his structure. He cries. Even several of the judges cried and the audience in the theatre let out a loud collective gasp.

One judge commented that it is like the Olympics. He stated that you have to be your best on that particular day.

On the final day all the chefs display the baking they have created during the three days of competition. Can you just imagine what that those tables looked like? 16 tables were filled with all types of pastries. It was a feast for the eyes and I was licking my lips.

This is a most delicious film.

Corner House

Corner House 501 Davenport Rd 416 923 2604

Corner House is a very special dining spot at the foot of Castle Loma. It is on the corner of Madison Ave and Davenport in a very quiet spot of town. This was a residential home before being turned into an exquisite fine dining spot. Because it is a house the rooms are small and the dining gives the feeling of being in a private home. It is personal and warm. Herbert and Michelle Barnsteiner have lovingly been the owners and chef for many years. The food is superior. Do make a reservation. I am happy to note that the restaurant will be open for lunch until Christmas.

Four friends were out for a quiet dinner with superb food.

The delicious breads arrived with an excellent white bean dip. That was a fine start. The Organic Arugula Salad is served with shaved pears, candied walnuts and Gorgonzola cheese tossed in an apple cider vinaigrette.($12.50) Baked Woolwich Goat Cheese is so

delicious with organic greens, stewed berries, vine tomatoes, cold pressed olive oil and balsamic vinegar.($12.50) Baked Snow Crab Cake is served with vegetable slaw and smoked chipotle aioli. ($13.75)

The Crackling Oven Roasted Organic Cornish Hen was served with roasted heirloom carrots, Niagara smoked bacon, caramelized apples, fingerling potatoes and pan jus.($13.95) Every morsel was appreciated and enjoyed. The Veal Chop Special was the main course choice for another guest.

The food was served in enormous white bowls and was plated in an artistic appetizing way. Two guests were thrilled with their choice of the Corner House Handmade Pumpkin Ravioli with butternut squash, leaf spinach, dry cranberries, roasted pecans and fresh rosemary.($18.75) It was more than superb. The flavors melded together on the palate and left an exquisite satisfying taste. I had thought to have the Yukon Gold Potato Gnocchi. ($19.50) They are hand made and prepared with roasted tomato and pepper sauce, fresh basil and crumbled goat cheese. Seared Alaskan Black Cod is a wild fish prepared with coconut basmati rice, sesame wok sautéed Asian vegetables in a balsamic-ponzu-ginger sauce.($27.50)

Wild Mushroom Risotto is prepared with wild and domestic mushrooms finished with white truffle essence.($19.75)

Crème Brule was one of the dessert choices. It was a generous portion topped with artistry and a large fresh strawberry. The Homemade Chocolate Ice cream was presented in an enormous white bowl. It was dense, rich and very flavorful.

All four guests agreed that this was a special evening on an ordinary night. Every bite was treasured and beautifully prepared.

I call this an outstanding restaurant.

The King's Speech

The King’s Speech

This is the best picture of the year. The first showing was sold out at 12:10 on a Friday afternoon. The film won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival and no doubt will be nominated for many Oscars for 2010.

Colin Firth is outstanding in his role of King George V1. Even better is Geoffrey Rush who plays the part of the unorthodox speech teacher. I wonder if they could share the award? They both deserve it.

The cinematography is splendid. The outdoor scenes in London portray fog and are shown in muted tones. It has such a serene look. In contrast the inside shots of Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey are so splendid.

George ‘Bertie’ has no desire to ascend to the throne. His brother David is the one in line. Once David takes up with the divorced Wallis Simpson everything changes. As history records he chose his love over the throne.

Bertie was terrified and did not want the role. He stammered severely so that he couldn’t even say a complete sentence without hesitating for a long time. His wife Elizabeth is caring and loving. She tries to get help but nothing seems to work. Elizabeth is played by the very talented Helena Bonham Carter. She finds a very unorthodox speech teacher.

Lionel Logue pretends to be a speech teacher but actually has no credentials. He is an actor but did have some success treating people with a stammer.

The relationship between the king and the teacher is magnificent. They fight. They laugh. They work hard at the task. The teacher uses most unusual techniques.

At some points I was laughing during the scenes. I also cried at other parts. Always the acting was gripping and kept my attention.

It is one of those films where you know the ending. At the same time I felt myself sitting on the edge of my seat urging him on as he made his powerful speeches during the wartime crisis.

All of the cast is superb. I enjoyed watching the characters who played the roles of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Churchill and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose.

At one point Bertie asks Lionel what he would like if he can get him to stop stammering. He quickly replied in jest,” a knighthood.’ We are told at the end of the film that the two men remained loyal friends. Lionel was rewarded with a title.

This film is successful on every level. Make sure you go early or book our tickets in advance. It is going to be hard to get tickets for this most popular film.

Jules Bistro

Jules Bistro 147 Spadina Ave 416 348 8886

Where have I been hiding? I have just discovered a little gem. Jules Bistro is located in the heart of the garment industry. The entertainment district is within blocks Restaurants, clubs and theatres are in abundance. Jules Bistro is a few blocks from all the excitement. The garment area is very quiet at night. I congratulate the restaurant for being so courageous to operate a fine restaurant in the area. It is a few blocks from all the excitement. I think this adds to the charm. The final result is that it works. Jules Bistro has enough energy for the whole area. This place is booming. The long narrow restaurant has the total menu written on the blackboard that extends from one end of the restaurant to the other. This is a very authentic French bistro.

I was entertaining my adorable granddaughter-in-law who was in town from Chicago on business. She was staying in the new trendy hotel area on Wellington St. I recently heard about Jules and thought this was convenient in so many ways.

Our serve, Anna, was so adorable and I kept expecting her to break into a chanteuse. Everything about the place is French. Anna made us feel as if we were special. It was such a pleasure to have her serve us.

We ordered the Prix Fixe menu for $24.95. Caesar Salad and Soupe a la Oignon are the two choices. The flavorful onion soup was a healthy portion with lots of cheese at the bottom. The Caesar Salad was crisp and fresh. I enjoyed the definite lemon flavor. It was one of the best Caesar’s I have enjoyed for a long time.

Steak Frites, Saumon Grille and Saute de Poulet are the main course choices. I don’t usually indulge myself with frites. The mayonnaise aioli guaranteed that no chips would be left on the plate. The salmon was moist and flavorful. My guest enjoyed the flank steak and frites..

The lengthy menu can be read from the blackboard or a printed menu. The menu offers many little notes about the origin of various dishes. It is interesting reading.

I was so tempted to order the Thon Grille ($!7.95) Grilled tuna steak is served with frites, ratatouille and mixed greens. It is my favorite fish. And I know I will return for a tasting. Nicoise also offers tuna with mixed greens, egg, green beans, tomato, potato, onions and olives.($13.95)

Les Sandwichs are served with salade verte or soupe or frites. Le Parisien is a ham, greens, tomato, cheese, butter, Dijon and cornichon combination.($12.95) Jules Burger offers ground to order beef, greens, tomato, onion, cornichon, Dijon and mayo.($13.95).

Les Quiches and Les Crepes offers a variety of options for $13.95.They are served with salade verte, soupe or frites. Leek and Caramelized Onion is my choice of Quiche. Asparagus with Brie sounds like a Savory Crepe.

How did we ever find the room? Chocolate Mousse with whipping cream was my guest’s choice. I opted for Crème Brulee. Wow! It was fantastic

There is an extensive wine list. We ate, drank and talked a lot. I love my young granddaughter and I certainly loved this restaurant. What a combination.

Omni

Omni 2793 Bathurst St. 416 783 2091

Can you imagine dining in style and shopping for exquisite jewellery at the same place? I love the concept. Java and jewellery is the original purpose of this establishment. Both parts of the business are always busy. I have had lunch and dinner here on many times. I have also enjoyed their catered food. This is a kosher restaurant. When my family visits from Israel we rush here to enjoy a gourmet kosher meal.

On this occasion I was at a meeting with 10 people. One of the members of the group was kosher so we decided this would be our meting spot. The menu is amazing and the food is extraordinary.

The bread is baked on the premises. It is multi grain with a crunch. I could eat a whole loaf by myself. We actually asked for more bread because it was so tasty and enjoyable.

We shared a Bruschetta ($6.99) while waiting for our dinner to be prepared. Toasted French Baguette is topped with fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil and herbs.($6.99) the Spring Rolls were an excellent appetizer and devoured them immediately.

Portobello Mushroom Soup is available daily.($5.99) One of the dinner guests has enjoyed it here on past visits.

I usually have the Salad Nicoise ($14.99(because they prepare it with fresh tuna. The platter is beautifully arranged and the salad items are fresh and crisp. The chunks of fresh grilled tuna are moist and melt in your mouth.

I adore tuna and most restaurants do not serve this splendid fish. It is expensive and must be prepared perfectly. Grilled Peppercorn Tuna should ideally be served rare because one second too many and the fish becomes dry. The fish was outstanding. It was served with a side dish of quinoa and crisp barely cooked fresh vegetables. A small dish with three serving sauces was placed on the table. The mustard sauce was my favorite. The tuna didn’t even require a knife. I could cut it with a fork. I was delighted with every bite.

The Indian Vegetable Curry is served with fried tofu and rice pilaf.($15.99) Eggplant Parmigiana Towers are rounds of breaded eggplant layered with cheese and homemade marinara sauce.($!4.95)

Sandwiches, Baguettes and Wraps are on the menu. The Open Face Brie Baguette features lightly melted brie with sliced apple, arrugula and brown mustard.($12.95) Portobello Mushroom supreme Panini is prepared with succulent grilled portobello mushrooms toped with mozzarella cheese.($11.95)

Larry, our server, was excellent. He presented all 10 dishes to the right patron. He was helpful and kept the water glasses filled. He was always attentive even though he was also serving the many other guests.

Don’t leave without dessert. The Cheesecake ($7.00) is the best. It is topped with caramel praline or chocolate. Every bite dissolved on my tongue. Wow!

Chocolate Pot Au Crème was prepared with sweet cream and served with a biscotti($7.00) and the Rotating Trio Dessert plate ($!0.00) looked too good to eat. Needless to say it was devoured in a few seconds and totally enjoyed. The Chocolate Brownie was dense and full of a deep chocolate flavor.

We accomplished our purpose in meeting. We also agreed that we had enjoyed a delicious meal.
