Easy A

Easy A

I needed to wean myself from the 20 films I saw at the Film Festival. My plan was to see 1 film the day after the festival ended. I wanted to start catching up on regular playing films that had opened during the week.

I remembered reading the Scarlet Letter as a teenager. It made quite an impression. This film was supposedly based on the same idea but with a modern touch. Easy A was shown during the Film Festival. I can’t imagine who would pick this film to be part of the renowned International Film Festival.

Olive Prenderghast is a pretty young teenager. She lives with her very liberal parents. I adore Patricia Clarkson. I think she plays the part well as the mother. I just didn’t like the part. Stanley Tucci is the father. The parents are ‘over the top’ liberal and think that anything is alright for their daughter to do. At the beginning Olive is just one of the run of the mill kids at school.

Trouble brews with the catty, very religious, right wing Marianne. She is seen throughout the film singing Christian songs and touting her moral virtues. Some of the religious singing is quite humorous. Of course it is overdone and is supposed to be funny. I found the whole film to be rather insulting and very juvenile.

Olive is hardly noticed until the day her good friend Brandon announces his homosexuality. Olive offers to help him by pretending they are a straight couple. They even simulate sex in a loud bedroom scene during a party.

The school kids then looked at Brandon with respect and awe. They also looked at Olive in a different way. She became a ‘harlot’ to them.

It was interesting to note that the Scarlet Letter was being studied in class. Rumors begin to spread about Olive and she becomes known as the school ‘slut’,

She plays into their beliefs. She wears a large letter ’A’ on her clothes and dresses in a most provocative manner. No student would ever be allowed into a school wearing those outfits.

Many boys solicit her and offer her cheap ridiculous rewards because they don’t have any money. It all gets out of hand.

There is a parallel story with the guidance counselor who is caught playing around with someone other than her husband. At first she is thoughtful and kind to Olive. When Olive discovers what she is up to she becomes vicious and mean.

I was amazed to read the good reviews for this silly film.

I think it had a good idea. Self fulfilling prophecy can lead one into trouble. Olive had good intentions to help out her classmate. It went way out of control.

Perhaps I saw too many worthy films at the festival and this just didn’t compare. Perhaps I have no sense of humor. Perhaps I find it hard to relate to the woes of a teenager.

Whatever, I did not think this film was worthy of the festival and I just plain didn’t enjoy it.

Uncle Boonmee

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Previous Lives

Winner at the Cannes Film Festival

I think I am going to move into the TIFF.Bell Lightbox. It is the greatest addition to our city. It is the official home of the International Film Festival but so much more. It was exciting to see how the population has embraced this exciting complex. Families were attending special events for children. The gallery was busy. The cafes were crowded. There are 5 auditoriums showing films 365 days a year .Each auditorium is furnished in elegant comfortable style. The lobbies are spacious and beautifully outfitted. The building has just opened and this was my second visit.

The first film I saw today was an old silent Buster Keaton film Sherlock 2. There were 6 musicians led by Fern Lindzon playing the score especially written by Fern for this production. It was outstanding. That performance was actually free. It is a must to look up the complete schedule for all that is happening here.

We stepped out of auditorium 3 to enter a larger facility auditorium 2. It is all very plush. and the seats are spacious and comfortable. The spacing of the sears is most appreciated. There is actually leg room.

I wanted to see Uncle Boonmee because it won the best prize at the recent Cannes Film Festival and there has been a lot of discussion about the film. Apparently Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the writer and director, was also surprised by the win.

The film is weird, spiritual and fantasy like. I can’t say I even understood it all. I was attending with my family and they were as perplexed as I was.

The film felt like a folk tale. There was symbolism. There was fantasy. There was imagery. The problem was in trying to understand the meaning.

A young man is obviously ill with kidney failure. He is attended by a young man who comes and changes the bandages and the medicine. He is also attended by several family members. His past dead lover comes and sits by his side. He asks her how he will find her once he is dead. She tells him that heaven is overrated and there actually is nothing there. We also see weird animals coming and going.

Are we to imagine that we are inside his head and he sees these images? Is some of this stream of consciousness?

At one point we are told a fable about a princess. She is carried on a bench by 8 men and followed by a group of helpers. She looks in the water and sees her reflection. She is not an attractive woman but for a minute she sees a young pretty girl. Was this an illusion? She talks to a fish and at one point the fish interacts with her. It certainly looked to me as if the fish was sexually interacting with the princess. What was that all about and what did that have to do with the dying man? Perhaps it was a dream.

When death becomes inevitable he is taken into the depths of a cave system. He tells his family that the cave is like a womb. It was actually very beautifully portrayed.

I suppose all the vignettes represented his confused mind and going and coming into a conscious state.

At times the cinematography was magnificent. I also enjoyed seeing the scenes of the people living in the village. The sparsely furnished homes were interesting. The beds were all covered with mosquito nets. They were constantly swatting bugs. In one scene the woman of the house kept stepping on bugs on the floor. It was an unusual film experience.

When the sick man actually dies there is a Buddhist ceremony. It was colorful and actually the only bright colors in the film.

Churrasco Villa

Churrasco Villa 254 Eglinton Ave East 416 457 7070

My family from Chicago was coming to Toronto for a week end. I was overjoyed and was looking forward to celebrating my son Bob’s birthday. I also asked my Toronto family to join us. 12 people for dinner is not an onerous task. However I am deeply entrenched in the Film Festival and see movies each day. How was I going to manage a five course meal and still see the films?

Appetizers were prepared in advance and only needed tomato rose decoration with sprigs of rosemary. Cornmeal muffins had been previously baked. The soup was in the freezer and a chocolate cheesecake was prepared in advance. The salad was definitely last minute. I served the salad in crystal champagne glasses so that it had a festive touch. I simply couldn’t do the main course.

The evening became more of a celebration when my grandson Brad proposed to his darling love, Hillary, at the Toronto Islands. He even invited her parents from Chicago to fly up for the weekend to surprise her. What an event. It was all so thrilling.

Churrasco Villa came to the rescue. All the family loves Churrasco Chicken. The company was very helpful in suggesting quantities. The food was delivered hot at the specified time. This way I didn’t need to store anything in the fridge or even heat up the food. The quantity was more than sufficient and the food was fantastic. Churrasco Villa uses a distinctive form of barbequing where foods are cooked slowly and maintain all the juices and flavor.

I was told that their Drumettes are a specialty.($13.99) I ordered a double portion. 2 Whole Chickens were perfectly barbecued and cut in pieces.($13.99)

I ordered 2 Slabs of Ribs. ($19.99) They were devoured in no time. The Churrasco Roasted Potatoes are so delicious that I was eating them cold and hot the next few days. It was only ($9.89) for a family portion. The Grilled Vegetables tasted as if they had just come from the barbecue.($6.99 per a family portion)

The Piri Piri Sauces added a wonderful flavor.

I have been told that the Seafood is extraordinary. A Calamari Dinner comes with roasted potatoes and veggies.($14.99) Churrasco Style Tiger Shrimps are marinated and barbecued. This is one of their signature dishes.($21.99)

You can order single portions or for a family. It is an extensive menu. It is also possible to dine at the restaurant.

Churrasco Villa came to my rescue. I was able to enjoy the family and the occasion. Everybody was satisfied. What an easy way to entertain. I will certainly do it again.

Heartbeats

Heartbeats

I was anxious to visit the new TIFF Bell Lightbox complex. This the new home for the Toronto International Film festival. You have to see it to believe how wonderful film going can really be. The complex includes 5 cinemas, three restaurants, a gallery and a gift shop. The café was standing room only. The vast lobbies are beautifully outfitted and give the aura of a grand theatre and not a movie house. The film showed in an auditorium that was richly furnished with upholstered comfortable chairs. The washrooms are worth a visit. The finest most modern facilities make for a great total experience.

I was anxious to see Heartbeats written and directed by the very talented Xavier Dolan. His first film I Killed My Mother was also a big hit. Dolan can now add editor and costume designer to his resume. What a great talent.

I think everyone will relate at some level to this touching film. It is a work of art. The camera lingers on certain scenes and becomes an emotional experience. The theme deals with infatuation, love and jealousy.

Dolan plays the part of Francis. He lives with the very beautiful Marie. The adorable flirtatious Nicholas comes into their life. He can wink or move a muscle in his face that gives a come on image.

The problem is that both Francis and Marie both become infatuated. They find excuses to be with Nicholas. At the same time Francis and Marie continue to show affection for one another.

Nicholas needs a place to stay. The three ends up in one bed with Nicholas settled cozily between Francis and Marie.

At no time is there a suggestion that any of the characters are having sex. They both want to have Nicholas but it is all done with gestures and words. At one point Nicholas gets very close to Marie at a party and says,” What comes next?”

The three go off to the country together. Nicholas teaches Francis how to eat a marshmallow in a very seductive manner. Marie gets jealous and takes off. Marie and Francis find their relationship very strained. He tells her that her dress is out of date. She blows smoke right in his face.

All the characters smoke continuously and throughout the film. At one point Marie states,” Smoke hides the shit.”

There are a lot if ripe emotions expressed. In many ways the film is art in motion. You may or may not like the characters but you certainly will relate to the feelings expressed.

The list of upcoming events at TIFF Bell Light Box is astounding. Feature films, art exhibits and concerts could keep anyone busy every day of the week.

Some newspapers are not listing the events. If you have a problem Google Bell Lightbox or check Now Magazine.

Portucale

Portucale 794 St Clair Ave West 416 652 3982

Recently I met owner Francisco by chance. He told me that he had just opened Portucale. I knew him from another restaurant in Toronto and was anxious to see what his new restaurant was all about. St Clair Ave West has become a busy spot with a variety of fine dining spots.

I chose to dine here with two guests. We were warmly welcomed and the service was most attentive. We liked the advice given about the menu and appreciated learning more about the wines that were offered.

The restaurant offers Mediterranean flavor. Both Italian and Portuguese food is available.

You can begin your meal with a variety of appetizers or salads. Italiana offers the classic tomato and bocconcini salad topped with marroccan olives, olive oil and basil.($7.95)

Mussels Italiano is prepared in a spicy tomato and white wine broth.($8.95) Flaming Chourico offers Portuguese pork sausage grilled and flaming.($8.95)

I have always stated my great love for Tuna. I would travel anywhere to dine on this fine fish. It must be cooked properly. Very few restaurants serve tuna because of the cost. Tuna was available on this evening as a daily fish special. The portion was gigantic but I managed to devour every bite. The fish was flavorful and tender. The salsa on top was delicious. I commend the chef for his artistry with the vegetables. The carrots were perfectly prepared and still maintained a little crunch. The broccoli was also enjoyed. Small roasted potatoes also adorned the plate. There was sufficient food for 2 people but I managed to enjoy every bite on the plate ($23.00)

Several other fish specialties were available on this evening.

Cataplana Portucale is a regular on the menu. A mixture of fresh seafood and fish is prepared in a tomato broth. The aroma and the flavor are magnificent. It is served in a covered copper pot. ($24.95)

Grelhada de Marisco is prepared with grilled calamari and tiger shrimp tossed in herbed garlic butter. ($23.95)

Australian Rack Of Lamb is brushed with Dijon mustard and encrusted with fresh herbs and home-made crumbs.($25.95)

One guest enjoyed the Fettucine Portucale. Tiger shrimp and scallops were tossed in white wine sauce.($14.95) It was declared a first class winner. My other guest asked the server for suggestions. She is allergic to fish and wanted something with chicken. That is no problem at Portucale. The server’s quick response was to suggest Linguine with Chicken in a pesto sauce.($14.95) It arrived in a large attractive white bowl and according to my guest was the winning selection.

We concluded our feast with a glass of white port. That is really something special. We also shared an apple tart.(Yummy)

This restaurant has only been opened for 2 months but already seems to be well prepared to serve excellent gourmet cuisine. Good luck Francisco.

Never Let Her Go

Never Let Her Go

If I had known this was Science Fiction I would never have gone to this film. I cannot appreciate or enjoy Science fiction. This film is different from most in this genre because it goes back to the recent past.

The book was written by Kazuo Ishiguro and adapted for film by his friend Mark Romanek.

The story was very compelling. It did raise issues that made me think and philosophize about life. The actors were well suited for their roles.

At the beginning of the film we meet Kathy H. We know that she is involved with some medical procedure but it is not made very clear.

The film then takes us back to the 1970’s to a fashionable private English boarding school. We learn that the students fear leaving the grounds but don’t really understand the reasons. The teachers are very firm, prim and proper. At that time Kathy H is a young student. She is very fond of Tommy, a young boy who is having social problems. He is bullied and the other boys make fun of him. He doesn’t seem to fit in. Kathy is warm and kind and the two become good friends.

As they get a little older Ruth becomes friends with Kathy and Tommy. In fact she becomes Tommy’s girlfriend and Kathy has to pretend that this relationship is acceptable as she values Tommy and Ruth as friends.

A lady arrives at the school and wants to take art work created by the students back to her gallery. We know nothing more about this action until near the end of the film. At that time we learn the purpose of collecting the art. It is all very clever.

One of the teachers ‘spills the beans’ and tells the students that they are ‘carers’ and ‘donors’ and their lives are going to be of value to another person. The teacher says.” We know that you will have your life set out for you. You were created to give your vital organs away.” That teacher was fired and never seen again by the students. Obviously the students were dumbfounded. I also was shocked and knew that all the following scenes were going to take me to a place that was uncomfortable.

In 1985 the three companions are moved to the cottages as the next step of the process. They are now more mature and old enough to understand what is ahead.

Ruth was told that if two people truly loved ach other they could get a deferment.

There are many issues to consider in the film. Ruth was in love with Tommy. The audience is always given the feeling that Tommy really cares for Kathy. If that is the case he wouldn’t be able to prove that it was true love.

As the film progresses Ruth and Tommy are getting more ill as the procedures take effect. Thank goodness we do not see what is happening medically. One scene did show a transfer of organs but it was brief and not to difficult to watch.

The film takes some twists and turns at the end. It was also very emotional. It does present some issues for thought. What is true love? What is the meaning of life? Should one go along with an expected path set out for us?

Going the Distance

Going The Distance

I know I am obsessive about seeing films. This is a hectic week. My Book Club is coming to my place for our first discussion. I’m having my family (12) coming for dinner on Saturday and the Film Festival begins this week. I could have stayed home and cleaned or twiddled my thumbs in expectation.

My son, in Chicago, recommended this film and I like to follow my children’s suggestions. I find it amazing that Drew Barrymore has been acting since she was 5. She is adorable and so perky.

She plays the part of Erin, a young want to be reporter. As the film opens she is an intern for a large paper in New York. When that program ends she plans to head to San Francisco.

This is such a typical Hollywood film that follows the prescribed formula. Cute girl meets the guy. They sort of have a relationship. Problems develop. They work out the problems and voila it all has a happy ending.

Erin meets Garret. I like the fact that he is her real life boy friend. Their magic showed and it was delightful. This part of the film was enjoyable.

What I didn’t like were his boorish friends. I can do without the toilet humor and gross talk. Garret’s buddies do warn him about having a long distance relationship.

At first the two love birds are on the phone every night. They bill and coo over the phone. Obviously it is hard to sustain such a relationship and eventually it falls apart.

Erin begins to succeed in her calling as a journalist.

But of course the two are destined to meet again and oh well you can guess the end.

Treadwell

Treadwell 61 Lakeport Road Port Dalhousie 905 934 9797

My sister and I were invited to lunch at Chuck and Brita’s fine estate in Saint Catherines. We sipped champagne and ate fantastic appetizers. At that point we were told that we would be their guests at the famous Treadwell restaurant. Brita’s daughter was married a year ago and the reception was held here. I recall enjoying one of the most divine meals ever. I can still remember the explosion of flavor from the Sticky Pudding. The restaurant advertises farm to table cuisine. It is much more than that. It is gourmet delicious and the presentation of each plate is very creative. They are noted to be one of the finest restaurants in Ontario.

Port Dalhousie is a charming village. It is on the water. It is fun to stroll on the main street and look at the shops. We could have dined outside on the patio. It is always lovely to sit outdoors and look at the water and the beautiful scenery. We opted for the quiet indoors.

We were warmly greeted by James Treadwell who continued to visit our table and make sure that we were comfortable and satisfied. Apparently many of the patrons at his fine establishment come from Toronto and even as far as Quebec. No wonder. Anyone with a fine palate will appreciate that this is a ‘cut above’ most restaurants. Treadwell is noted for the tasting menu. Do inquire. At lunch a 4 course meal is $40.00. It allows you to taste various dishes and have new culinary experiences.

On this occasion we were satisfied to have a light lunch before the drive back to Toronto. It was such fun to sit at the window and watch the young boys jumping from the bridge into the river below. We also enjoyed the bike riders who raced on the bridge over the river. There was much to see and a lot to discuss. Once the food came we found we were very quiet as we busily engaged in the fine art of great dining. Tomato Soup was the daily special.($6.00) I was tempted to order the Beet Salad composed of roasted heirloom beets and cherry salad with the best feta, dill and hazelnut vinaigrette.($14.00) Tomaotes is a salad composed of tree and twig heirloom tomatoes with Monforte Toscano and basil.($12.00)

My brother and sister were thinking alike on this day. They ordered the Soup and Sandwich special.($14.00) A small cup of that creamy fresh tomato soup was on a lovely large white platter. The sandwich was enormous. The healthy portion of ham and cheese was on freshly baked bread.

Brita enjoyed her Perch.$16.00) The fish was pan fried and served with a smoked bacon potato salad. A poached egg was nestled on the top of the portion.(16.00)

I did consider the Omelette,($!5.00) Free range eggs are cooked with smoked trout and arugula.($15.00)

I was very happy with my choice of Pasta.($18.00) The housemade pappardelle was perfectly al dente. It was so flavorful. Tree and Twig tomatoes with virgin canola oil added that little ‘zing of flavor.’ Little pieces of fried basil were immediately devoured with great satisfaction. It was an exquisite dish.

Treadwell is also noted for their fine catering. It is a delightful drive to experience a gourmet feast. The restaurant tries to purchase all the ingredients from within the area. The fruits and fine wines of Niagara are so accessible. Jason Williams is the chef de cuisine. He is a master at his art. Stephen Treadwell and his son James work so hard to maintain the finest standard.

Life During Wartime

Life During Wartime

I didn’t know what to make of this bizarre film. It truly is wacky and yet I found myself enjoying it. Incest, dysfunctional families and pedophilia are hardly topics for humor. In this film you may feel disturbed about the situations but they are handled in quite a funny manner.

Trish is one of the main characters. She has told her three children that their father is dead. In reality he has been in jail as a pedophile. She tries her best to meet the children’s needs but in good parenting she would be considered a failure. The young daughter takes drugs from the cupboard with ease sanctioned by the Mom. The middle son is approaching his Bar Mitvah. He is practicing his speech about becoming a man. He and his mother discuss sexual issues that would make you squirm. Trish comes home from a date and tells her son she was ‘all wet’

Trish dates Harvey. He is a middle aged unattractive divorcee. She wants so much for a normal life. Harvey thinks there is a chance at a relationship. He tells Trish that he can’t afford to fail again. He brings his geeky son for dinner. The family dynamics are hardly a positive experience. Trish and Harvey talk about going to Israel. Harvey told Trish he voted for Bush and McCain because of their policy to Israel. (Funny but pathetic) Trish had told her son that his father was a pervert. She instructed the son to scream if a man ever touches him. Poor Harvey hugs the son when he seems upset. The son starts to scream and poor Harvey is frightened away.

Trish’s sisters are also a ‘piece of work.’ One sister talks in a little girl voice. She always has a dead pan look on her face. Her attire is anything but stylish. She does social work rehabilitating black ex-cons.

Shirley lives and works in Hollywood. She is very successful in her work. A string of Oscars sits on a shelf in her home. She is of no help in empathizing or supporting her sister.

Many of the sets are fairy tale like and whimsical much like the lives of the characters involved.

The story becomes more involved when the father is let out of jail and comes back to see his children.

The issues are all very real. They have been exaggerated and presented in a comedic manner. I wish I had of known more about the writer and director before I went to the film Todd Solondz is known for his other films. Life During Wartime is apparently a sequel to his very successful film ‘Happiness. I think it is safe to say that this current film will not be pleasing for many people. I considered it a film experience and I quite enjoyed it. I chose to see the people as characters and not real people. They presented very serious issues but made it all easy to digest by presenting it in a ‘screwball’ fashion.

Lisbon by Night

Lisbon By Night 802 Dundas St West 416 603 6522

This restaurant is a Portuguese event. Every night is a fish festival offering a variety of grilled fish perfectly seasoned. I am not surprised that Lisbon By Night won an award from Summerlicious 2010. You walk up a steep set of stairs. On the second floor is an enormous room. A small stage is on one side. On this evening we were treated to a solo musician who played a keyboard and sang Portuguese songs. I almost melted listening to the music.

You must try the Fish Rodizio. (only $20.00) The very best Portuguese bread is presented. Fine olive oil and balsamic vinegar is on the table. From then the fun begins. Platters of fish are presented to each table. You help yourself to each offering. The server continues to come around with a variety of platters. They want you to try everything. You just keep eating. The platters continue until you say; “Enough.” We just kept eating and eating. At the end I almost had to get on my knees to plead that I had dined on quite enough for the next year.

Bowls of delicious roasted potatoes and the best rice I have ever tasted are placed on the table. There was also a bowl of fresh salsa. I was eating it alone. It was so tasty. On this evening we tasted calamari. shrimp, salmon, swordfish, sea bream, grouper, and mackerel plus more that I can’t even remember.

This is the most deluxe feast imaginable. The next table ordered a large Fish Platter. Every fish imaginable was piled on a platter. A group of 4 people were eating and eating. The pile never seemed to diminish. It was a work of art.

If you don’t want to indulge in the Fish Festival Rodizio ( I heartily recommend it) you have a full menu from which to select the finest of Portuguese food. Meat lovers will delight in the dishes offered. There is a variety of Pork offerings.

Fried Sardines are the best in town. So many different types of fish are offered as single plate options.

Our server, Susanne, is the best in town. I enjoyed her company and good service on my last visit. She is amazing. She kept urging us to try more. She explained the dishes. She was delightful company.

We even indulged in some ‘heavenly’ dessert that had more calories than I wanted to count. We stumbled out of the restaurant with a big smile on our faces. We knew we had dined on the best. It was a total experience and we loved every minute.

The Rex

The Rex 194 Queen Street 416 598 2475

This is not a review of where I have been but rather of an upcoming event. Many friends have asked about attending one of Alex’s performances. He has been busy all summer with composing music and applying for grants. He has plans for a new CD in the coming year. Most of Alex’s gigs have been private venues or out of town. I was so excited to hear of the upcoming gig on October 6 at the Rex. from 9:30 p.m.

All the music played by the Alex Goodman Quintet will be music composed by Alex.

I look forward to hearing the new music.

Alex Goodman guitar.

Max Roach drums.

Nick Morgan sax

Darcy Myronuk piano

Dan Fortin sax

The Rex offers a variety of drinks and food. You can have a snack or heartier fare. I have enjoyed their sandwiches on many occasions. Nachos or Spring Rolls are available for a light snack.

Alex’s goal is to perform many of the selections that will be part of his new CD. This is an opportunity to hear the music before it is officially produced.

I hope to see you there.

Bistro Grande

Bistro Grande 1000 Eglinton Ave. West 416 782 3302

This is the best kosher food in town. My granddaughter, Shoshanna was leaving to go back to Israel. This was our final evening together and I wanted to dine in style. The restaurant is well appointed. It is always lovely to see crisp white tablecloths and the tables set with wine glasses. I have used the private room at the back on a previous occasion. The service is always so friendly and efficient. Scott was our server on this evening and he made us feel special. He delivered the basket of warm delicious bread before we had even ordered. I liked the small white dish that had quantities of butter, olive oil and balsamic vinegar as well as a delicious white bean paste. All tastes were looked after here.

As this is a kosher restaurant it has only dairy items. There are no meat products served. There is so much variety and all tastes can be accommodated.

My readers may get tired of my talking about my love of tuna. I never get tired of eating it. Bistro Grande has the best Salad Nicoise in the city and I always enjoy it.($18.00) A large white bowl is filled with the finest ingredients. The green beans are perfectly cooked. The little potatoes are tasty. The greens are fresh and crisp. The vinaigrette is flavorful. Best of all are the chunks of perfectly cooked tuna. I would never get tired of trying this flavorful dish.

Shoshana opted for the Linguine. Organic whole grain pasta is served with portobello mushrooms, fresh herbs, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic and infused with a light tomato sauce.($18.00) Shoshanna is a fine cook and she was delighted with her choice.

I was tempted with the Fettuccine Salmone. Poached salmon is prepared with assorted field mushrooms, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and fresh cream.($20.00) The ravioli combines roasted house made vegetables and tops the pasta with an herb tomato cream sauce.($18.00)

Fish lovers have many choices. Of course I would opt for the Tuna Steak. It is peppered sushi grade and grilled with portabello mushrooms, sautéed spinach, tomato concasse and served with a shallot wine reduction.($34.00)

Halibut is prepared tempura style and served with chips. Creamy cole slaw and house made tartar sauce are part of the combination.($20.00)

Pizza lovers are well treated here.9 choices are available. The Mediterranean Pizza is flavored with feta cheese, fresh tomatoes, sun-dried black olives, roasted garlic, sweet onions, pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese.($18.00) Sounds yummy.

The appetizers and salads are numerous. You can dine lightly or enjoy a multi course feast. You are guaranteed finely prepared gourmet food. Whenever my family comes from Israel we look forward to a gourmet experience at Bistro Grande.

The Tillman Story

The Tillman Story

A good documentary is so satisfying and I always learn a lot. I remember when the Pat Tillman story first broke. Pat was a famous football hero. He was a defensive back for the NFL. He gave up all the glory to enlist with his brother in the American army. I remember questioning why he would do such an outrageous thing.

The documentary tells us many facts about his life and shows us the type of honorable person that he was.

He had an infectious smile and was very handsome. He was caring and friendly to his fellow soldiers and never seemed to play the football hero role.

Pat Tillman was killed on a road ambush. His memorial was huge. There were numerous flags and large amounts of flowers. Political dignitaries were in attendance. He was played up to be such a hero who died for the glory of his country. He was presented a Silver Star.

The facts began coming out that he was actually killed by friendly fire. The memorial was planned as a political device using his name to glorify the army.

Much of the story is told by his mother. She is an amazing woman and was relentless in trying to get the facts about his death. As the facts became known it was pointed out that it was actually known by higher political figures that he was killed by fellow soldiers. We see an actual clipping from the investigation. The army personnel and political figures couldn’t seem to remember anything. After the investigation we could see all the officials laughing together.

I was so repulsed when a news clip showed Barbara Bush speaking with her husband. The story had just broken about Pat Tillman’s death. Barbara Bush stated,” Why should we hear about body bags and death?”

One soldier tried to tell the facts as he knew it to happen. He was told to be quiet. Not only was he ordered to accompany the body back to the States he had to inform the parents about Pat’s death.( giving the false story) His father was so devastated at the news of his son’s death but even more upsetting was the lie perpetuated by the government. The father stated at his memorial.” He’s not with God. He’s fucking dead.” He said that the government picked the wrong family to lie to.

It is a powerful story well told.

The American

The American

I pushed my way through a torrential rain storm to reach the cinema. I am totally exhausted from my frustrating experience this year in getting my tickets for the Toronto International Film festival. My Book Club is coming this Tuesday and 12 guests are coming for dinner next Saturday. In other words I don’t have time to waste. I was getting all stressed and prepared to have a negative experience at this film. I sat through the total film with soaking shoes and clothes.

The film had a lot to offer and I do recommend seeing it. I loved every photo shot of Abruzzo. The mountains and valleys are breathtaking. I adored the small village scenes with the winding narrow lanes and little houses built up the mountain.

George Clooney is actually very good in this film. Sometimes the camera would focus a long time on his face. His facial expression would tell a lot.

I can’t say I fully understood the story. I am not sure what it was all about. There was suspense and intrigue.

George Clooney plays the part of Jack. He is a hit man and able to make a very special rifle. We learn that he is on a mission to kill someone but I was never sure who that was. Along the way he becomes involved with the gorgeous Clare who is a prostitute. He also befriends the local priest. It makes for some interesting action.

The women were so beautiful. There was one sex scene that was quite magnificent.

I did find it amusing when George Clooney is having a big shoot out in the middle of town and there is no interest from the locals. Not one door or window opened and the street was mighty quiet. I can forgive this flaw because I did enjoy the suspense and action.

Negroni Panini

Negroni Panini 492 College St. 416 413 0005

One of my favorite dinner companions was taking time from his busy music schedule. Alex has been writing a lot of new compositions and getting ready for a new CD. I was delighted that we were able to meet for dinner.

I have been a loyal fan of Side Car Grill on College St. I still maintain it has the best salmon in town. It is always busy. You must have a reservation. The food is superb.

Owners Bill and Casey had told me about their sister restaurant Negroni and I promised myself to try it out. My next visit will be to the newly opened bar Side Car Bar above the restaurant. It sounds like a fun experience to sip a fancy cocktail and listen to music.

The restaurant is beautifully designed. There is a small patio both in front and at the back. I like the way the tables are well spaced.

We sat outdoors on the front patio. Our perky server continued to make sure that the water glasses were filled and that we were satisfied with out food. We were totally satisfied.

Negroni offers Panini that are as delicious and varied as you might find in Italy. Every bite was a ‘wow.’ The restaurant is on my favorite strip of College St. There is such a buzz on this street. People are always strolling on the street. The restaurants are busy.

The Paninis are absolutely fantastic. They all include an arugula and fennel salad. That alone was worth a visit. The greens were fresh and flavorful. The freshly shaved grano pedano was perfect.

We started with an order of Herbed Bufula Ricotta Spread.($9.00) The crostini were made from good quality bread. The ricotta was infused with lemon and was creamy and delicious. Selections of Cured Meats are available.($14.00) If you prefer a Selection of Cheese is a good choice with a glass of wine.($14.00)

Chicken Salad is served with tomatoes, red onions, black olives and grana padano.($10.00) The side plates offer a choice from a panini. I recommend the Panini because they are so delicious. They are also filling. It makes for a complete meal.

Alex ordered the Sirloin Steak, Aged Cheddar and Horseradish Mayo Panini.($12.00) Alex declared the steak to be very tasty and the combination was thoroughly enjoyed. I was thrilled with the Asparagus, Goat Cheese and Pepperonata.($10.00 The flavors were very complimentary and made for one tasty dish.

I was tempted with the Italian Tuna with Lemon Capers, Artichoke and Hard Cooked Egg.($12.99)

I was told that the Veal Meatloaf with marinara and goat mozzarella is a favorite choice here.($12.00) The lady at the next table shared with us her pleasure with her choice of Capponata, Walnuts, Swiss Chard and Oven- Dried Tomatoes.($10.00)

The restaurant is about to introduce a new menu. I found the choices to be very creative. More important the food was fresh and flavorful. This is such a reasonable dinner or lunch choice.

It is interesting that Bill and Casey have established three venues on College Street that are so successful and all so different. I have enjoyed Side Car Grill and now Negroni. The new Side Car Bar will be my next stop.

Kos

Kos 61 Bellevue Ave. 416 597 6912

I adore going out with my friend Estelle. We always have such fun. We spent two weeks in Tuscany together and it was a great adventure. Last evening we decided to go to Kensington Market and find a little spot for dinner. I know the market as a great place to buy fresh cheese, fruits and vegetables. I know there are a lot of cafes in the area but I was not familiar with them. We parked the car and strolled around the streets. It was such fun. There are many boutiques, coffee shops and cafes. One patio was filled with beer drinking patrons even though it was quite chilly outside. The area takes on a different look in the evening. We saw the sign for Kos and decided to take a chance.

Kos is basically an all day breakfast place. There is an enormous patio outside. The wooden chairs and tables inside made us feel as if we were in some small town café. The server, Marianna, was very relaxed and friendly. She also did a great job. It was a great place to have a glass of wine and enjoy a relaxed light meal. There was no pretense and no noise. The food is unbelievably reasonable. We spoke with the chef. The owner chatted with us.

Estelle started with a Greek Salad.(sm. $4.95lLge $7.95)It was composed with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, cucumber, red onions, Kalamato olives and Feta Cheese. Estelle complimented Marianna on the delicious salad and the tasty vinaigrette.

I hadn’t had a Caesar Salad for a long time and thought that would be a treat.($4.50 small-$7.50 lge.) It was really tasty. The greens were crispy. The dressing was flavorful. The Parmesan cheese and croutons added to the taste.

We shared a Grilled Cheese Sandwich.($5.50) It was so delicious. We were very happy with our great discovery and enjoyment.

There are many sandwich suggestions on the menu. Philly Steak sounds so tasty with fried onions, mushrooms, green pepper and cheese.($6.95) Veal Parmesan also offers fried onions, mushrooms, green pepper and cheese with the veal.($6.95)

This is not a large establishment but they offer 12 different types of Hamburgers. I was tempted with the Veggeburger ($5.95) All the hamburgers are served with fries.

The egg and breakfast choices are numerous. Eggs Bennie offers 3 poached eggs, English muffin, peameal bacon covered in a Hollandaise Sauce.($7.95) Eggs Salmonnie is prepared with poached eggs, smoked salmon, English muffin and Hollandaise Sauce.($7.95)

A Spinach and Cheese Omlette is filled with tomatoes, red onions, green pepper, olives and feta cheese.($7.95)

The menu is available all day and evening. There are a few heartier offerings. Chicken Souvlaki is homemade. It is served with Greek Salad rice and Tzatziki sauce.($12.00) BBQ Chicken is served with rice or potatoes and salad.($10.50)

It was like going back into the past. The warm small town feeling was so appreciated. The food was really great. The prices are so amazing.

What a discovery! What fun!
