L'espresso Bar Mercurio

L’Espresso Bar Mercurio 321 Bloor St West 416 585 2233 I have eaten at this favorite neighborhood place on many occasions. I have always enjoyed the delicious fresh food and delectable pastries. I always admired the beautiful private room at the back. I knew one day I would have the opportunity to dine there. My apartment is under renovation. The furniture was wrapped in plastic and the floors covered with grit. Hardly the spot to entertain my granddaughter, grandson- in-law and great grandson (6 months old) They were visiting for only a few days from Israel and en route to a wedding in the US. Family wanted to see them. L’Espresso to the rescue. The private room was like being in a home and was perfect for a seating of 11 guests. It is elegantly outfitted. We sat regally at a large beautiful wooden table. The comfortable chairs made us feel very special. There was still room to walk around and enjoy private conversations. We ordered from the regular menu. Two Guests enjoyed the Angus Burger.($11.50) It was enormous and apparently very tasty. The Vegan Burger came in a tortilla wrap.($10.95) The Warm Calamari with Pasta was a choice made by one guest. Two of the guests enjoyed the Nicoise Salad. ($19.50) I have enjoyed this salad on many occasions here. We all loved our food and enjoyed seeing the selections made by one another. The Magic Wrap was prepared with a tortilla filled with many wonderful ingredients.($8.95) The Roast Beef Panino is a favorite on this daily menu.($10.95) One large bowl of Soup and 2 small bowls completed our dinner order. I am happy to say that everyone enjoyed their tasty dishes. For dessert we had several platters of Assorted Cookies. My favorite Biscotti were so scrumptious. Ginger cookies, Macaroons, Almond Crescents and Almond cookies made up the tasty platter. The Cappuccino here is one of the best in town. I love that drink. Others sipped on a variety of types of coffee. Special thanks to Yalda who so efficiently looked after us all. She kept the water glasses filled and poured the wine. She took all the orders and promptly delivered the food. Everything was done with charm and pizzazz. We wanted to adopt her into the family. This was a special reunion. We actually had five generations in attendance. Babies do bring out the best in all of us. It was a memorable occasion. I am indebted to L’Espresso for making the evening such a success.

Restaurant Giardino

Restaurant Giardino in the Gate House Hotel 142 Queen St at Niagara on the Lake 905 468 3263 Niagara on the Lake is one of the most charming towns in Ontario. I love to enjoy a gourmet meal and then attend a performance in town. For many years I had gone to a small inn across the road and was well served. This year I was so disappointed with my visit I decided to reach out for a new experience. I have always admired the graceful manse on this large property. It is a hotel with lovely gardens. The inside dining room was elegant and beautifully appointed. We opted for the front terrace under an umbrella. What a fine choice! Nick was our server and looked after us with warmth and expertise. It’s great to try something new and have it a positive experience. We were grateful for our elegant lunch because the play was so terrible. We left at intermission and decided to shop instead. That was a more positive experience. The little boutiques are a delight. My traveling companion began with an Insalate di Mara.($10.00) The cold seafood salad was composed of shrimp, calamari, and baby scallops tossed in lemon vinaigrette. The menu didn’t list the arugula but it was obvious on the plate and added a balance to the flavors. I ordered the Insalata alla Cesare with Jumbo Tiger Shrimp. The homemade Caesar dressing was absolutely mouth watering delicious. Balsamic croutons and grated parmesan cheese complimented the flavors. The salad is priced at $10.00. With the shrimp it was $18.00 and well worth the price. The shrimp were firm and so flavorful. The salad was crisp and tasty. I enjoyed every bite. I was only afraid that with a little red wine and all this great food I would fall asleep at the play. I wish I had because the performances were so bad. My friend ordered the Rigatoni alla Bolognese for her main course. The home made pasta was served with a meat sauce also freshly prepared. Apparently it was an old recipe from Bologna. ($14.00) The Canelloni Nettuno was a tempting choice with shrimp, baby scallops and salmon enclosed in an oven roasted crepe. A rose Bechale Sauce topped with Swiss cheese completes this gourmet experience. All pasta dishes are $14.00. I almost ordered the Salmone alle erbe di Campo. The herb crusted Salmon is oven roasted and served with a dill butter sauce.($15.00) I am coming back to try this dish. All of the lunch entrees are served with vegetables and potatoes. Scaloppini di Vitello all’ Argois is prepared with tender veal scaloppini sautéed in lemon with a baby caper sauce served on a bed of spinach in a white wine butter.($18.00) Several Pizza suggestions are listed on the menu. Diavola is prepared with fresh tomato sauce, Mozzarella, Calabrese salami and mushrooms. All pizzas are $15.00 4 Stagioni would be my choice. Fresh tomato sauce, Mozarella, mushrooms, black olives, artichoke and pepperoni sound mouth watering delicious. We thought the menu was varied and interesting. The ambiance was cerebral. Every morsel was satisfying. After the drive from Toronto we were so delighted to relax outside under the umbrella and satiate ourselves with fine wine and great food. How exciting to discover a new ‘favorite spot.’

Rooster Coffee House

Rooster Coffee House 479 Broadview Ave 416 995 1539 What a scenic part of town. You can overlook the Don Valley and see a beautiful landscape of downtown Toronto. In the middle of this residential area is a little café that is a total success. Look for the red umbrellas outside and lots of folk sitting at the tables. I have passed it many times and marked it on my ‘must do’ list. I had invited some friends for coffee. They laughed at me when I suggested I was going to introduce them to their neighborhood coffee house. It is already their neighborhood watering hole and are both well known by first name at this delightful spot. I thought I had discovered a new place. I couldn’t believe the action at 11:00 am on a Monday. People just kept coming in. Many were take outs. All the tables on the sidewalk were being used on this gorgeous summer day. Even inside customers were enjoying the fine coffee, reading newspapers and working on computers. The staff was so friendly. Coffee is roasted here. Rooster Coffee House is known for many types of fine Coffee. Pastries and Sandwiches. You can get your coffee fix by choosing from the lengthy list. The important thing is the excellent quality of the beans and the flavor through the preparation. I didn’t drink coffee for over 12 years. I am now a ‘craving convert.’ I need my daily fix. I am constantly searching for the fine spots in town that serve a flavorful rich cup of coffee. I have learned it is an art to prepare the best. The Rooster Coffee House is open seven days a week. It is a little oasis in mid town. I enjoyed a Cappuccino and a Blueberry Scone. It was all so delightful. My friend had a Steamed Milk. We talked so long she later ordered a Vegetarian Sandwich. Her husband enjoyed two different types of coffee and a scone during our visit. Rooster is also noted for the delicious sandwiches. It was obvious the other clients were regulars. This was my first visit and certainly not my last. I felt I had an education in the fine art of brewing a good cup of coffee. The only problem is finding a seat because the place is so popular.

Pickle Barrel

Pickle Barrel Yorkdale Shopping Centre (near the Bay) 416 785 8881 It was the perfect place to meet with my granddaughter, grandson-in-law and my delicious 6 month old great grandson. They were in town from Israel and staying in the northern part of the city. They could drive comfortably to Yorkdale and do some shopping. I was able to take the subway. Yorkdale has become a very upscale shopping centre. The Pickle Barrel also had a transformation a few years ago. Rose Reisman became an advisor for the menu keeping in mind, good health, nutrition and flavor. She has made an incredible difference. The restaurant is huge but divided into small sections. We had a booth and it felt quite private so we could talk and hear without a lot of din in the background. Our server Mila was so sweet and always helpful. Her charming smile and attentiveness made us so welcome. We all enjoyed our food and felt as if we were in a ‘top of the line’ restaurant. This is an economical friendly spot for families, groups, or individual diners. My granddaughter ordered The Grilled Rainbow Trout. ($16.95) The food was beautifully arranged on the plate. This does so much for the appreciation of a fine meal. Not only did it look good she was delighted with all the flavors of the fish and beautifully prepared vegetables. The Shiitake Gnocchi arrived in a large bowl. A salad was also included. My grandson had enough delicious food to satisfy his large appetite. ($17.49) My Salmon Teriyaki was perfect. I couldn’t believe I could eat with one hand and hold the baby with the other. I didn’t miss a beat. The salmon was beautifully flavored and very moist. It was placed on a bed of rice and stir fried vegetables. It was tasty and very satisfying. ($16.99)We were all happy diners. The young parents demolished an enormous Peanut Butter Sundae. ($5.99) My Cappuccino was excellent and served with small Biscotti. It was all so delicious but at 3:00 am I wished I had delayed on the coffee. Pickle Barrel does a major catering and take out business. Their Party Sandwiches are the best. The menu is enormous. Every type of food suitable for breakfast, lunch or dinner is on the menu. The service is always with a smile. The food is fresh and tasty. I am even more pleased now that the Pickle Barrel has such an emphasis on healthy, flavorful food. You can also choose to ‘binge’ and go off your diet for a change. The mouth watering Pastries in the cooler are more than tempting. When I see a large plate of Tuscan Grilled Cheese Pannini with goat cheese, mozzarella, aged cheddar, sundried tomatoes, olives and a light pesto sauce being delivered to the next table I get a mouth watering feeling. ($11.95) I have enjoyed the Vegetarian Soya Burger in the past. The meatless burger is served on a bun with tomato, grilled onion, and pesto mayo. A green salad is included. ($10.49) If you fancy some type of food it is sure to be on the menu somewhere. It was a totally satisfying evening.

Your Sister's Sister

Your Sister’s Sister It is the summer season and my expectations are lower. The best films begin the new season in September. On a hot lazy summer day this film will be a satisfying experience. If you like being left wondering what happened you will be delighted. There was an audible gasp as the film ended at a crucial moment. I love that because my imagination can complete the picture and I can make anything happen that I desire. The film opens with a group of friends lamenting the fact that a year has passed since their good friend Allan died. Jack is still grieving his brother’s death. Iris is a good friend of Jack and a former lover of Allan. Iris suggests that Jack ride his bicycle to her country cabin in the woods. She thinks he may find some peace and with some soul searching feel better. Jack is a sweet man. He is out of work and not exactly successful. He arrives late at night at the cabin and discovers Hanna, Iris’s sister is staying there. The film is a lot of interpersonal dialog. Hanna gets to know Jack and likes him. She tells him of her past relationship which has just dissolved. Iris arrives on the scene. The dialog between the two sisters is believable and touching. They say two is company and three a crowd. Iris and Jack have their own personal dynamics. It is a bit like a three ring circus. There are confessions. There is drama. There is laughter. I can’t tell you the ending because you are left on a cliff. Better that way.

Lakvino

Lakvino Ristorante 525 Bloor St West 647 345 2134 It was a special birthday celebration for a special person. I was asked to make the dinner arrangements for a group of six. Lakvino was perfect. It is easy to reach by car, walking or subway. Lakvino is a new quiet spot in the bustling Annex area. I find the clay colored walls very soothing. There is a tranquil inviting ambiance. The service is extremely warm and welcoming. Just as I imagined. This was truly the perfect spot. Six people raved about their food. We laughed (a lot) and thoroughly enjoyed the total celebration. The crispy bread is almost a meal in itself. I love the tasty dip that is provided. In the past it was a red pepper dip. So flavorful. On this occasion the dip was prepared with kidney beans, garlic and balsamic vinegar. We devoured several dishes. A shared Baby Green ($7.45) was fresh, tasty and totally enjoyed. I had the Pasta Special.($17.95) It was fantastic. The pasta was also served hot. I am always so delighted when the food is hot because it is hard to keep pasta warm. Fettuccini was flavored with a tasty white wine, garlic sauce. Many pieces of moist tasty salmon and tiger shrimp enhanced the dish. Fantastic! Several of the guests chose the Grilled Calamari. ($11.95) I couldn’t believe it was posted as an appetizer. Three large grilled pieces were on a bed of greens. It was enjoyed by all. The Grilled Salmon ($16.95) was beautifully plated and the taste also made the mark. The salmon portion was very generous and the fish was perfectly prepared. The Lakvino Fussili was prepared with a tasty sauce and chicken.($14.45) On my last visit I enjoyed a thin crust tasty Pizza. There are many choices on the menu. It was a birthday celebration so we had to celebrate with dessert. The Chocolate Hot Cake and Tiramisu were quickly demolished and we all licked our fingers and our lips. I love a good Cappucino. Not every place can claim attention to their coffee. This was a spectacular Cappucino. We all left satisfied and felt that the birthday girl had indeed enjoyed it all.

Alps

Alps This bizarre film is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. He is noted for his film Dogtooth that made quite a statement at TIFF in 2009. Apparently Yorgos doesn’t like films that are predictable and everything is explained. This film is listed as an absurd comedy. Absurd suits it to a ‘T’. I failed to see the comedy. I am unlike Yorgos. I don’t like a film that I cannot understand. I like to have a film unfold in a logical believable manner. The film centers around a strange group of people that belong to a club called ‘Alps’. Each person has the name of a famous mountain in Switzerland. What a strange group of people. They were not funny to me at all. In fact several of the men were scary and threatening. They promised violence if the others didn’t follow their instructions. Their goal was to take the place of a recently departed person to help the grieving of the existing family. We meet a nurse who is working when a young tennis player comes into the hospital with life threatening injuries after an accident. When she dies the nurse promises to be a daughter to the grieving parents. I fail to see anything funny in that concept. It was weird and didn’t work at all. She lives with her father who seems to stay home all day and reads. In the evening he goes ballroom dancing. His partner is a woman much taller. They do dance well together but look a little ridiculous. The daughter tags along and sits there morosely watching her father. In one scene she actually starts to touch her father inappropriately and he slaps her. My favorite character was a rhythmic gymnast. I loved watching her practice. She was amazing. Her brutal coach threatens her if she does not succeed. She even attempts suicide because she cannot cope with her trainer. There are weird sexual encounters. One man tells his wife what to say during sex. They both seemed to have on all their clothes. He was aggressive in talking to her and she is very passive. The audience was numb when it ended. Most just sat for a few minuets and didn’t move. I overheard several of the audience ask what that was all about. It is filmed in muted dark tones which aptly sit the mood. The characters are all bizarre. Other than the rhythmic gymnast I found the characters to be sinister, deceiving and strange. If that makes for good filmmaking I am not for it and obviously missed the point. I like some sense of order and a sense of understanding the main theme. Repression and authority are constantly running through the vignettes. I don’t enjoy watching women who are oppressed. I thought about leaving but confess that I was curious. I couldn’t even guess how it would all turn out. In the end it was not a satisfactory film experience.

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages Raucous! Loud! A riot! Good fun! The cast in this outrageous musical says it all. My favorite is the adorable Julianne Hough. I was her biggest fan when she danced in Dancing with the Stars. She is an amazing talent. I now find she can also sing. Her personality is so infectious. She plays the part of Sherrie, a young girl who leaves Oklahoma for Hollywood. She is young and innocent. She meets Drew who wants to be a singer but is shy. Diego Boneta has a fresh young look. He can really belt out a tune. He falls for Sherrie and she gives him the confidence to get on stage. He even becomes a famous rock singer. Alec Baldwin is the owner of the Bourbon Club where all the great rock music takes place. His ridiculous wig makes him look bulbous and silly. He is supposed to be a character but I felt he was the only misplaced cast member. I am not a fan of Russell Brand. He really shows his wild side as the assistant of Alec Baldwin. He is so totally ‘over the top’ but then the whole film is supposed to be an exaggerated fun musical. Catherine Zeta Jones plays the role of the mayor’s wife. She is determined to shut down the Bourbon Club. It is a sinful disgraceful place. (In her mind) She preaches and rants and raves about the depravity of the rock singers. She breaks into song and dance and is really great. What fun! To see her metamorphosis is too funny. The story of the film is about a great rock singer, Stacee Jaxx. I couldn’t believe the part is played by Tom Cruise. He certainly is in great shape and puts his heart and soul into this ridiculous role. Stacee is a drunkard, over sexed and totally unreliable. He dresses in tight black leather pants and wears a large fur coat without a shirt underneath. He talks as if he is totally drugged. Paul Giametti is his sleazy manager. Everybody sings and dances. I loved the music and I am not a fan of rock and roll. Sherrie and Drew break up over a misunderstanding and Sherrie takes a job as a pole dancer. I didn’t know you could do such things on a pole. The dancing is more than amazing. It is so sexy. The dancers are in unbelievable shape. It is worth the price of admission to watch the pole dancing. It is all ‘tongue in cheek’. The music is loud. It is all good fun and great entertainment. This musical will never go down in history as a great musical. It is fun for the moment. I enjoyed watching this outstanding cast having fun. The audience really enjoyed it all. When Tom Cruise scratches his privates the audience was delighted. Malin Ackerman and Tom Cruise become hot lovers. When she sticks her (long) tongue in his ear there was a loud guffaw in the audience. Don’t judge it too closely. Just have fun,

Lola Versus

Lola Versus My windows were all being changed. My place was totally wrapped in plastic and the saw dust was everywhere. It was too painful to be home. I walked downtown to see this film and even walked back. I had no idea what I was about to see. I just wanted to be out of the house. It was a delightful surprise. Lola is 29 years old and in love with a handsome loving man. (so we think) She is a grad student and totally in love. She thinks she has it all. He is attentive and caring. He proposes and Lola is thrilled. She begins all the tasks required in planning her wedding. She is so happy, The jerk jolts and she is left in one unhappy state. Her best friend tries to help her. They go to bars and dance clubs. She becomes really friendly with Henry, her boy friend’s best friend. He is very sweet to her and they do a lot of fun things together. She meets a man at the bar and has sex with him that night. In other words she is struggling to get over the loss and to move on with life. Because she is grieving she does make some bad choices. While all this is sad for Lola there is certainly some humor for the audience. Lola matures and begins to find herself. Greta Gerwig plays the role of Lola. She is very convincing in hr role. This is not a serious film. It is good for a summer romance comedy and somewhat entertaining.

Terroni

Terroni (revisted) 1095 Yonge St 416 925 4020 It was so superb the first time I had to return to see if I imagined it all. It was even better on this visit. I consider this the perfect spot for gourmet food at breakfast lunch or dinner. It was a very special friend’s birthday. I wanted it all to be perfect and gave a lot of thought to the restaurant choice. After my first visit to this Terroni location I knew where we would be dining. The staff is very professional, warm and hospitable. I would love to attend a training session to see how it is done. How fortunate for us we had Kimberley as our server. She is exquisite and so knowledgeable. We followed every suggestion she had for wine, first course and second. She was so right! I knew there was no option for dessert other than that Torta Calda. It is the best molten chocolate cake I have ever had. Terroni has done an exquisite job in the décor. The design is attractive and functional This is a very large restaurant but it is divided so that you have the feeling of being in a small room The downstairs room with a lovely outdoor patio does not take reservations. Come early. Reservations are necessary for the upstairs room because it is busy morning, afternoon and evening. This truly is the hottest new spot in town. The high quality bread is served with the most amazing extra virgin olive oil. It has an exquisite flavor. Happily you can purchase this product at the front counter downstairs, Other than one enormous 32 oz. Steak for $99.00 the food is moderately priced. Does anyone actually eat it all? Kimberley knew the wine list and we loved her recommendation. The Funghi Assoluti was the best salad I have ever tasted.($12.95.) A variety of mushrooms are breaded and fried. They are placed on a bed of arugula and covered with shaved reggiano parmigiano. We all shared the salad and declared it outstanding. I have never heard so many ‘oohs and ahhs.” Four guests were dining together and we did taste each other’s food. The Napoli Pizza was amazing. I am guessing that the flour was imported from Italy because it had a special flavor. It was an enormous pizza and even with sharing we couldn’t finish it all.($14.95) Two of the guests enjoyed the Spaghetti Limone.($16.95) The pasta is also prepared with flour from Italy and cooked perfectly al dente. The lemon flavor was complimentary to the fine quality pasta. The cheese shavings gave it a richness to complete this wonderful dish. The Ravioli with Duck was a generous portion but our guest had no trouble finishing it all. The sauce was excellent and the flavors so tasty.($17.95) Torta Calda is a hot smooth soft molten chocolate wonder.($8.00) It explodes on the palate and it just has to be totally devoured. There is no way you can leave even a speck of this dessert on the plate. I hope the birthday girl had a good time. Terroni has a magic formula to make everything perfect. From the moment you enter the restaurant you are treated as a ‘special guest.’ It was nice to see large groups, families and tables of two. Everyone is accommodated. If it was so special on my second visit just imagine what is in store the next time I return. I only hope it is soon.

In the Family

In The Family This is the second picture this week I attended because someone recommended it to me. It was a fine film but 3 hours is too long for any film. I was touched and the story really reached me. I believe it was the first film I have seen where the parents are two gay men. Joey is Asian and Cody is not. This brings another dimension into the daring story. They were a loving couple and so wonderful with their son Chip. Cody had been previously married but his wife died. The adorable Chip was his son. Joey becomes friends with Cody and eventually they are lovers. It took each of them by surprise to discover the meaningful relationship. They both cared for Chip and gave him a stimulating loving environment .It was lovely to see how they all got along. Cody dies in an accident and the trouble begins. Cody’s family claims possession of the house and also claim family rights on Chip. Apparently Cody’s will had been written before Joey and Cody knew each other. It is heartbreaking because you could see that Chip and Joey had a close loving relationship. Chip called him Dad. Joey gets support from people from work. He is such a gentle soul that you couldn’t help but be on his side. The husband of one of his clients takes him under his wing and challenges Cody’s family. It was positive to see a gay relationship with a child so positively portrayed. It was also understandable to see the family strife when Cody died. It broke my heart when Joey was not allowed into the hospital room to see Cody because he was not considered family. It is an emotional story well told. Unfortunately it took too long to tell it. Editing would have made it an even better picture. The camera work was very interesting and powerful. When Cody is declared dead we only see the back of Joey’s head. The camera lingers on him for a long while. It is as if you reach right into Joey’s soul. It was emotional and powerful. Several times the camera lingers for a lengthy time to make an impact. At one point there actually is a black screen and you see nothing for a while. I have never seen this before in a film. The acting is excellent. The young child who plays Chip is unbelievable. Joey comes through as a caring, soft spoken gentleman. You can’t help but love him If you have 3 hours to spare this is well worth viewing.

The Intouchables

The Intouchables Where have I been hiding? How could I have missed this excellent film? I was on my way to the latest Cronenberg film. I bumped into two different sets of friends in a coffee shop. Both asked me if I was going to see The Intouchables. I declared my ignorance but honored their recommendation. I changed my plans. What a delightful thought provoking film. Phillipe is paralyzed from the neck down. He is very wealthy and able to afford a lot of help. He is a gentle lovely man. He is in need of a caregiver. Dris is a large sized black man out of work. In fact he wants to stay that way. Even his mother has given up on him and kicked him out of the house. He goes for an interview for the job but only wants papers signed that he is not suitable for the job so he can keep getting welfare. The whole interview process with a series of men is quite humorous. He does end up taking the job and changing Phillipe’s life. It was fascinating to see how the two got along. In fact they both helped one another. Dris became a caring person thinking of Phillpe and his welfare. He took him places and talked to him in a straightforward manner. He gave him dignity but did not spoil him. His interaction with the rest of the staff was very funny. At the same time the character development made for a good story. The differences in class and color provided humor and power to the story, The plot kept my interest throughout. It was based on a true story. How interesting to see what happened to both characters.e shows him the joys of life. He makes Phillipe feel like a man and encourages him to . He takes him to the sea. he dines out with him. He even encourages him to meet a young lady he had

Dessert Trends

Dessert Trends & Bistro 154 Harbord St 416 916 8155 Dessert Trends was always a favorite bistro. They closed for many months for a major renovation. It was always an attractive airy pleasant spot with superb food. I couldn’t wait to see what changes have been made. Wow! The renovation is unbelievable. It now features, marble walls, the most exotic light fixture, banquettes and a total new look. It is spectacular. Donald Duong is the chef/proprietor, He is a master baker. In fact he won an Olympics contest for his fantastic baking. Three of his masterpiece wedding cakes are on display when you enter the restaurant. A counter of the most beautiful tantalizing pastries grabbed your attention when you entered. The counter has now shifted to the side but believe me you cannot miss the display of those magnificent creative pastries. Donald does a large catering business and his pastries are famous at many elite functions in town. My faulty memory prevents me naming our beautiful server this evening. She was so sweet and attentive. She also is exquisitely beautiful. Her Italian Scandinavian heritage shows. She added much charm to an already spectacular place. The Prix Fixe menu is the best value in town. For $25.00 you can make a selection from many choices for a 3 course dinner. Daily Soup or Mushroom Soup are featured. I have tasted that creamy full flavored mushroom soup. Amazing. A House Selection of greens and vinaigrette is another option. Seafood or Vegetable Rolls is the other choice for the first course. Mushroom Papardelle is full flavored and a popular choice for the Prix Fixe. Bistro Sirloin Burger or Moules Friites are the other selections for the main course. Dessert is a must at this establishment. Chocolate Banana Pudding with Caramel Gelato, Chocolate Truffle Cake, Crème Brule or Two Scoops of House Made Gelato are the dessert choices. Three ladies were dining here on this evening. Every table was filled but it was not noisy. The Bistro Sirloin Burger is served on a brioche bun with onion jam, house pickles and frites. The meat was of top quality and the flavor was excellent. It was a very generous serving. A tasty gourmet treat.($14.00) One guest was not too hungry and ordered the Onion Soup.($8.00) It was a meal. The melted cheese on top was plentiful. Apparently the flavor was superb. It was a large portion. The Seared Ahi Tuna Nicoise was my choice. Potato, egg, olives, anchovies, French beans and champagne vinaigrette made this a dish I will long remember.($26.00) There was so much tuna and it melted in my mouth. I enjoyed every mouthful and can’t wait to go back for more. Someone at another table ordered the Rack of Lamb.($28.00) A rosemary crust, blueberry red wine demi, and roasted vegetables made this picture perfect dish. It was a vision of culinary artistry, Dessert Trends is a must visit. The food is extraordinary. Apparently the upstairs is about to open with a flourish. Afternoon tea and light lunches will be available. My return is not a maybe. I loved the place before but it has risen to a perfect. 10.

Glow

Glow 7 Marie Labatte Rd Shops At Don Mills 905 479 2402 The Shops at Don Mills are all high end. It is no wonder that this arty fine food restaurant chose to be situated there. It truly does glow in many ways. The décor is creative and’ glowing.’ Large green glass sculptures stand on a high counter. The ceiling also has a gallery look to it. It is all quite grand. The outside patio was perfect on this wonderful day. I was so impressed with the menu. Rose Reisman inspired the healthy tasty selections showcasing lighter, balanced food selections. Anne is a dear life long friend. We have been childhood friends since birth and continue to enjoy our outings to reminisce on all the wonderful fun times we enjoyed together. There isn’t wasn’t enough time to catch up on all our activities. I had a difficult time making a selection because everything seemed so appealing. Vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free items are available. Before we even ordered, a plate of delicious multigrain bread arrived at the table. Scoops of pureed beet, caramelized onion and squash were so tasty we finished it all before even making a food selection. My first thought was to have the Quesadillas.($14.00) They are stuffed with sautéed mushrooms, red and yellow peppers, pesto and goat cheese in a whole wheat tortilla and served with light sour cream and fresh tomato salsa The Crab Cakes are spiced with a tahini sauce.($12.00) My friend ordered the large Caesar Salad.($11.00) Crisp romaine hearts with flatbread crisps, roasted garlic, reggiano parmesan cheese and an eggless Caesar dressing made for a magnificent lunch. ($11.00) I chose the small size ($8.00) but added a side of Grilled Shrimp ($8.00) We both expressed delight at the fresh tasting salad. We also agreed that they were the best shrimp either of us had ever had. The shrimp were large and had a wonderful barbecue flavor. Glow’s gluten free section will appeal to many. A Grilled Cheese Panini ($15.00) is stuffed with a marinated Portobello mushroom, roasted red peppers, grilled zucchini, arugula, goat cheese & mozzarella, with a light pesto aioli on a grilled gluten free bead served with a side Glow salad. ($15.00) I have already decided that the 5 Grain Veggie Burger will be my choice on my next visit. It is served with tahini sauce and edamame charred corn salad.($14.00) All sandwiches are served with a Glow salad. A daily Omelette is also served with a Glow Salad and multigrain bread.($15.00) Teriyaki Salmon is baked with a teriyaki-hoisin glaze and served with edamame & charred corn salad.($24.00) Pastas and Stir Frys are also listed on this tantalizing menu. A selection of Mini Indulgences in individual dessert shooters is brought to the table.($3.00) I loved the Biscotti. Great Food! Finish off your experience with a little shopping in the fine shops.

Grazie Ristorante 2373 Yonge St 416 488 0822 I adore my dinner and lunch experiences with my grandson, Alex. Grazie was his suggestion and I was happy to comply. At dinner he proudly announced to me he had received a scholarship for the next two years for his Master’s Program at the Manhattan School of Music. A bitter sweet celebration. I will miss him and our outings but know that a future great jazz player will be the result. Joseph is the front end man who greeted us and made sure we were happy with our table. This is a busy restaurant. At lunch you can make a reservation. In the evening you take your chances. This is a large restaurant and always fully booked. The patrons just kept coming in. Yet, we immediately got a table and we were never rushed. It was friendly service and it was obvious that others were also enjoying the total package. One room has large art works on the wall. The other room features mirrors for a dramatic effect. I don’t even mind sitting at the large bar for lunch or dinner. It also was full. The Bruschetta was amazing.($6.00) My only complaint was we ate too much. The crisp toast was a great platform for the freshly cut tomatoes. I could taste fine olive oil, garlic and herbs. Delicious. We knew we couldn’t manage a salad as well as pasta. We salivated over the beautiful bowls of fresh salad being served to other patrons. On my last visit I did enjoy a tasty salad for lunch. The Baked Goat Cheese Salad is a combination of goat cheese, roasted red pepper, grilled eggplant wrapped in phyllo with fresh arugula enhanced with sherry vinaigrette. ($12.00) We both decided on Pasta this evening. Alex chose the Penza.($16.00) Penne was prepared al dente and mixed with vodka, pancetta, green onions and chili pepper. The portion was enormous but there was no difficulty in finishing everything The Teramo is prepared with spaghetti, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, green onions, parsley and olive oil.($15.00) I ordered Quattro Stagioni.($14.00) The mixed vegetables in the rigatoni were tossed in a most delicious lightly flavored sauce. There was just enough to flavor the food and not overwhelm it. The food was served piping hot. This made me very happy. It is difficult to keep pasta hot. I enjoyed it so much. The portion was enormous. Thankfully Alex helped me to finish it all. Tomato Sauce, Creamy Tomato Sauce, Extra Virgin Oil and Garlic and Cream Sauce are choices available to compliment a variety of pastas. We admired the Pizza being demolished at the next table. We actually set out to have a pizza but then changed our mind. The Giardina is prepared with plum tomatoes, mozzarella, eggplant, zucchini, fresh peppers and ricotta cheese.($14.00) Elena is a popular selection with tomato sauce, mozzarella, grilled chicken, goat cheese and spinach.($18.00) Secondi Piatti offers four choices of main courses. Grilled Salmon is served with new potatoes and an arugula salad with black olives and capers.($21.00) There is a bustling energy in the air. The crowds keep coming. Service is pleasant and the food is exceptional. The prices are affordable. It was a happy dining experience.

Asian Legend

Asian Legend 418 Dundas St. W 416 977 3909 I don’t often dine in a restaurant that is part of a chain. I was surprised to discover that Asian Legend is also situated in Scarborough, Markham, Thornhill, St Catherines and other spots in Toronto. Check the web at www.asianlegend.ca This was my second visit to this great Chinese restaurant. It is clean and bright. It is airy and the service is remarkable. Best of all I find the food to be outstanding. It is my favorite spot for Chinese food. Four cousins were out for dinner to catch up on our busy lives. We each have different food likes and dislikes. That is what makes this so perfect. Everybody had a choice and we shared it all. It is a great way to sample a variety of foods. The Szechuan Style Hot & Sour Soup was just the right thing for a rainy cold evening. (I like the fact you can order a small, medium or large bowl. The small bowl ($4.95) seemed to be endless and we all enjoyed it so much. There are ten different soups from which to choose. The Steamed Shrimp Dumplings were hot, fragrant and very tasty. (5 for $6.95) The Kung Pao Chicken ($10.95) was devoured by the meat eaters. Nothing was left. I would consider that as a testament to the fine taste. They also raved about the Onion PC Roll.($5.95) My request was for the Sautéed Green Beans in a garlic sauce.($10.95) I remembered how delicious it was from my last visit. The beans were crisp and perfectly cooked. The flavor of the sauce was perfect to add to our Steamed Rice. Imagine getting excited about green beans? One of the diners requested an eggplant dish. Braised Eggplant in Chili & Garlic Sauce was a winning combination.($9.95) I could eat that every day of the week. The menu is so varied and numerous items are all numbered. It makes it so easy to place your order. The food all tasted fresh. The service was amazing. The price was economical. The number of Noodle Dishes and Rice Dishes are numerous. Casserole choices are popular. Seafood, Chicken, Beef and Pork each have many choices. It is fun to come with a crowd and enjoy a sampling of all the categories. It was good the first time. It was even better the second time. I know I will return soon.

Tenemus Papa

Tenemus Papa We Have A Pope Absolutely delightful! Creative! Imaginative! Good fun! Nanni Moretti must have had such a good time in directing this unusual film. It is a somber beginning as a Pope is laid to rest. The crowds are numerous outside the Vatican. The large numbers of cardinals have assembled to choose a new Pope. The music is somber and the cardinals are serene. The custom is for the cardinals to be secluded until a new Pope is named. I didn’t even know the names of the cardinals but the tension rises as the votes are counted. The ritual behind the selection was fascinating. I enjoyed the whole process. Many a cardinal shows his deep thoughts and we hear the inner mind begging not to be chosen. The excitement builds as the black smoke comes from the Vatican and finally white smoke appears and the bells ring. The people are jubilant. The problem is that the new Pope has a melt down. He can’t face the crowds and goes into a state of depression. At one point he yells out,” Can’t you make me vanish? Let me go away.” A psychoanalyst is called in to help. It is quite humorous but at the same time the rituals and the possible thoughts of the varied cardinals was believable. The psychoanalyst organizes a volley ball game to keep their minds from the serious situation. You can just imagine how funny it was to watch the cardinals playing volleyball. I adored seeing the inside of the Vatican. The long halls and magnificent rooms were wonderful to see. The people wait patiently outside the Vatican for the Pope to appear. Days go by and nothing happens. A Swiss guard is asked to flutter the drapes and make a shadow behind the curtains as if the Pope is in residence. He is given copious quantities of wine and an abundance of good food to perform this act. Meanwhile the Pope has left the Vatican and is roaming around the city in search of his true inner self. He attends the theatre and goes into shops. He talks to people on the transit. He is making up his mind what to do. It is sad but also funny. You may be surprised by the ending. The music was wonderful. The acting was superb. How refreshing.

Terroni

Terroni 1095 Yonge St 416 504 1992 This is the hottest new spot in town. I recall when the Terroni on Adelaide first opened the crowds were lined up outside. The management of this firm has done it all right. The décor has to be seen to be appreciated. It is modern ‘cool’ with great artistic flare. Everything is well appointed. The downstairs is always busy and the patio is a choice spot for summer dining. No reservations are taken for the downstairs. I love the upstairs because you can reserve. The tables were well spaced and we felt comfortable and private. The décor is warm, trendy and delightful. Kim was our lovely server. What a smile and such a beautiful face! She was patient and helpful and so charming. It adds a lot to the total experience when the server does a superb job. It is so obvious that the staff is well trained. Three women were out for a late lunch. Two of us opted for the Nizzarada. The arugola was crisp and fresh. I love the peppery taste that was balanced with the potatoes, tuna, eggs, red onion, tomatoes, olives, green beans and anchovies.($11.95) It was all served in a delightful Italian pottery bowl. Every bite was enjoyed. The portion was generous. All the salads are prepared with extra virgin olive oil. We dipped some of the bread into a dish of this exotic olive oil. The flavor burst on the palate. Apparently the olive oil is imported from Italy. Outstanding! It can be purchased from the restaurant. Do check out the products for sale at the entrance level. The Calamari Alla Griglia was served with mixed greens and fresh tomatoes. ($13.95) Our guest used superlatives to describe the flavor. All the Primi Pasta is prepared with fresh pasta made in house daily with eggs and Italian flour. There is no taste like good fresh made Italian pasta. It has a different flavor and texture and is so delicious. Pappardelle Alla Iosa features homemade spicy sausage, button and oyster mushrooms, peas, parmigiano and extra-virgin olive oil.($16.95) The Spaghetti in Canna a Mare is prepared with fresh clams and mussels, calamari, scallops, and tiger shrimp. The light tomato sauce is not served with parmigiano cheese because it is believed that the delicate flavors of the shellfish should be served only with a tomato sauce. ($16.95) Gnocchi Alla Simi is pasta prepared with a tomato sauce, fresh ricotta, basil and parmigiano. ($16.95) The Pizze are noteworthy. Natalina is prepared with tomato, mozzarella, roasted red pepper, hot calabrese salame, garlic and onions.($$!5.95) Pizza Cosi is a popular choice with tomato, fresh porcini mushrooms, mozzarella, fontina and prosciutto di parma.($18.95) There are a multitude of choices. The Specialita Del Giorno is printed on a separate menu. On this day the Pesce Spada Pistacchiato was a pan seared swordfish encrusted in pistachios and served with agrodolce salad.($20.95) Straccetti al Balsamico offers thinly sliced beef tenderloin, pan seared with aged balsamic, roasted potatoes, arugola and cherry tomatoes.($20.95) Make sure you save room for dessert. We devoured a Plate of Assorted Biscotti as well as sharing a Hot Flourless Chocolate Cake. All were delicious but the cake was the best I have ever eaten. This is a winning combination of great food and fabulous service.

Spencer's on the Waterfront

Spencer’s On the Waterfront 1340 Lakeshore Road, Burlington 905 633 7494 www.spencers.ca Burlington is a charming town. The waterfront is lovely and widely used. Spencer’s is a large modern glass building overlooking the lake. It was the perfect spot for my sister and me to honor our brother’s special birthday. He and his partner live in St Catherines. Burlington was a half way spot to drive to celebrate the occasion. Thanks to my neighbor who highly recommended this spot that was unknown to me. She was so right with the accolades. It was a lovely drive and I would do it again. The rewards at the end were noteworthy. Sunday is Champagne Brunch time. We had no knowledge of the food, the menu or the cost. Brunch is $43.00 per person. Not expensive considering the quality and the quantity of the food. All the drinks are included. Champagne, Kir Royale and Mimosas are non stop. It was great entertainment to watch some of the people enjoying vast quantities of beverage and food. Various stations for the buffet are placed around the large airy room. One station features main course items. There were numerous choices. Eggs Benedict, Lamb and Pasta were just a few of the featured main portions. There was so much else I didn’t even stop at this station. Enormous Crab Legs were in a large bowl. My favorite was the large bowl of giant Pesto Shrimp. Quinoa Salad was exceptional. I even enjoyed Potato Salad. I usually pass on it The Maple Smoked Salmon and little marinated pieces of Herring were so tasty. The station outside on the patio featured Crepes and Waffles. It was obvious that was a popular choice. Breads and a selection of Cheese were of the finest quality. The Desserts were exceptional and too numerous to even mention. Dare I confess I enjoyed a Lemon Tart, Brownie and Bread Pudding? The others at the table equally indulged. My sister declared the Banana Chocolate Cake a winner. My brother’s partner liked the Fruit Crumble. I wanted to take a bite from my brother’s Butter Tart. We ate as if there was no tomorrow. After indulging sufficiently our delightful server, Geoff brought a slice of Chocolate Mousse Cake with a candle. He had overheard us congratulating our brother on his birthday. Geoff was a delightful charming young man with a wining smile. He was attentive and efficient. The place was fully booked but we always felt that he gave us attention as if we were the only patrons in the place. That young man is going to go far. The food was of exceptional quality. Everything was delicious and plentiful. This is an ideal place for a special occasion. The window seat was fantastic for overlooking the water and all the activities on the beach. The young musician entertained all the guests with jazz on his keyboard and I loved his singing. Lunches are served from Monday until Saturday from 11: 30 am. Dinners begin at 4:30 pm. How lucky we were to celebrate our brother’s birthday together! What a great location! What fabulous total experience!

Seven Grams Cafe

Seven Grams Café 131 Avenue Rd. 647 351 1317 revisited The Capuucino was so superb I had to return for a second visit. This coffee house amazes me. It is not a part of Avenue Road with a large passing trade. It is a little north of Yorkville Ave. It is a testament to the fine quality of the coffee and the pastries that this place is booming. Once again I ‘dragged’ my dear 98 year old aunt out for a stroll and some coffee. I even insisted she try the cappuccino for a new experience. It was a lovely day and we sat outside. We had to race to beat another couple for the last table outside. We were the winners in more ways than one. It was fun to look at all the patrons inside. Some were working on their laptops. I pads were also prominent. The important thing is that the place is thriving. You can feel comfortable alone or in a group. I always like to look to see what people are eating or drinking. Various pastries (mostly made in house) were being consumed. I stuck with my favorite Cranberry Biscotti. It is exceptional. On my next visit I plan to sample one of the Sandwiches. They look so inviting. The bread is a multigrain and the fillings look so delicious. The sandwich is enormous. I will have enough for another meal at home. I am on a mission trying cappuccinos around the city. This is my favorite spot and the very best cappuccino. I love the surroundings with the whimsical art work. It doesn’t matter if you sit inside on the top level or downstairs at the bottom level. It is a great place to enjoy the finest coffee with a delightful ‘nosh’. I can’t get enough of the wonderful stuff.

Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom There was a torrential downpour and I was in it. I was devastated to realize that I was at the wrong film. I had no intention of seeing this picture. I had seen many previews and determined it was not for me. I guess you really can’t judge a book by its cover. It was creative, witty and very original. The time is 1965 and the place is the New England coast. The bizarre story is mainly told by two 12 year olds. Sam is an unusual young boy. He has been foster child and it hasn’t worked out. In fact the family doesn’t want him any more. He is in a Boy Scout troupe and is not liked there at all. He is friends with Suzy and they run off together. Suzy lives with her bizarre parents. (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand) Her three younger brothers seem like the perfect little boys. They are a contrast to the weird Suzy. She walks around with her binoculars around her neck, her knee socks and her too tight dress. Her blue eye makeup is so overdone. The Boy Scout troupe is a riot. The leader smokes and allows behaviors that are totally ridiculous. One boy works with explosives. The fun begins when the Boy Scout troupe begins to search for Suzy and Sam. Suzy and Sam are also totally ridiculous but a riot. They run away carrying a suitcase and other items. They seem to have so much fun together. They dance in their underwear and seem so comfortable with one another. The story is sad/funny. The adults all seem mixed up. The two rebels are strange but know what they want and are comfortable with it all. It is quite cast and they all perform so well. Bruce Willis plays the part of the police man. Edward Norton is the ridiculous scout leader. This is a story of youth rebellion. The teens know what they want and set out to live their life in their way. They rebel against the adults and the norms of society. They cause no harm to anyone in their pursuit. There is so much humor but underlying the comedy is a serious side of two individuals who are struggling to find their way. I was totally surprised by this film. The previews did not work for me but the film certainly did.

Charles Inn

Charles Inn 209 Queen St Niagara On The Lake 1-905 468 4588 An outing at the Shaw Festival requires fine dining to complete the package. I have always loved this quiet inn at the end of the main street beside the golf course. There are 12 lovely rooms for a stay over with a continental breakfast. The dining room is old Victorian and beautifully outfitted. The food has always been superb. I have had lunch on the back porch as well as in the fine dining room. I have enjoyed a superb gourmet dinner here before going to a show, I was anxious to have a new experience at an old venue. I haven’t been in a few years and I suspect there are new owners. There are tables outside in the garden for lunch, drinks or afternoon tea. We sat on a porch that has been added to the front of the inn. It is the quiet end of town and the large white house with the yellow umbrellas in front makes a serene statement. The food was good but I was a little miffed with the service. I felt that the greeting was a touch haughty. The service was unbearable slow. We had a play to attend and had advised the server. We finally had to get up and ask someone to take our order. The water was slow in being delivered Now that I have expressed my problems I must add the food was wonderful. The environment was quiet and regal. The server was most attentive at bill time. My friend ordered an 8 oz. Beef Tenderloin Burger.($14.00) The server was a little arrogant when she asked him to cook it thoroughly. When it arrived she was delighted with the taste and quality. The onion bun was delicious. A small tray with condiments was placed on the table. I ordered the Roasted Beet Salad.($9.00) The greens were fresh and crisp. A few beets were at the bottom of the plate and a little goat cheese was placed on top. The vinaigrette was superb. The serving size was a little small but I had already planned to have a gelato on my way to the theatre. I was tempted with the Trio of Canadian Cheeses. ($12.00) House made chutney is served with grapes and baguette crostinis. You are able to make a selection of your cheeses. Our server raved about the Roasted Leg of Chanteclaire Rouge served with celeriac risotto cake on baby spinach. ($15.00) Apparently it is a house special. I adore macaroni and cheese and was also very tempted with the offering of Maitake Parmesan & Truffle ‘Mac & cheese.’ Herbed panko crumbs are on top of a creamy dish of elbow macaroni, parmesan cream, caramelized onions and baby spinach.($15.00) This is a classic inn with delightful food. I just wish they would try a little harder in the ‘friendly department’. We noticed that many of the restaurants in town have been renovated and updated. Charles Inn has a lot of competition. With a little more effort they could be ‘the top of the line.’ I was just grateful I was with a friend who is flexible and willing to try anything. She even forgave me for the bad play we saw. That was a lot of driving on her part for mediocre activities.

Last Call at the Oasis

Last Call At The Oasis Guaranteed that after viewing this important film you will check all your taps for drips, shut off the garden hose and empty the pool. You may even stop buying bottle water. The film made a deep impact and it was all very upsetting. The film opens with beautiful pictures of gurgling water and free flowing streams. How beautiful and tranquil. The mood quickly changes as we learn about the crisis throughout the world with drought and polluted water. “Water is the single most necessary element.” Erin Brockovitch takes on the challenge of residents in several states in the US. Their water is so contaminated and the government has not acknowledged the problem. She is a fearless fighter and has helped the residents to make some change. In some places the water was so bad. When tested it reached astonishing levels of pollution. Scientists have proved the mutation of many species as a result. We are so privileged here with swimming pools, showers, car washes and watering our lawns. We take it all for granted. Los Vegas is facing a mega problem. Too much construction and too little water is presenting a serious issue. Many of the large hotels have enormous fountains using great quantities of water. The water levels throughout the world are shrinking. Apparently 36 states in the US face water shortages in the next 3 years. The water crisis in Australia and the Middle East is discussed. Chemicals and industrial waste have hastened the pollution of our precious water. I wasn’t surprised to hear the name of Dick Cheney and Halliburton in being responsible for destructive waste entering the water. I had never heard of Atrazine before. It is a chemical causing prostate cancer. It is banned in Europe but is widely used in the US for agriculture. Bottled water was another issue discussed. How naïve we are to think that the water in those purchased bottles comes from the Arctic or wherever they say. Some suggestions are given. Many scientists are interviewed throughout the film. I found it very educational and most upsetting.

Bistro Tournesol

Bistro Tournesol 406 Dupont St. 416 921 7766 Perfection from every perspective! My son and daughter-in-law were visiting from Chicago. It was their anniversary and the meal had to be splendid. I gave so much thought to the location and type of food that would be pleasing to connoisseurs of fine dining. I know they love small, charming restaurants and above all the best cuisine. Bistro Torunesol has been a favorite of mine for many years. The food is guaranteed and yet every time I dine here I remark on how exquisite it is. Mel Bryan, Philip Lewicki and Craig Lockhart have the perfect formula. Every guest is so warmly welcomed to this delightful restaurant. I like the fact that it is a bit off the hot trail of noisy, high tech, top of the line restaurants. It is elegantly appointed and in such fine taste. The menu is creative and offers choices for any palate. Every bite is exquisite. It was even better than I remembered and my guests were overjoyed with my choice. A first and second course is $29.00. The biggest problem is in making a selection because it is all so tempting. The East Coast Crab and Fish Cake with Celeriac Remoulade melts in your mouth. Perfection on a dish! The Escargots “A La Bourguignonne” with garlic, parsley and pastis butter were thoroughly enjoyed. I opted to sit out a first course in anticipation of dessert. The Tournesol Green Salad with sunflower seeds, cucumber, carrot, beet and shallot vinaigrette is a popular choice. Duck Terrine with pine nuts, shiitake mushrooms and cranberry chutney and basil crostini also wows many patrons. I remembered that the salmon was the most exquisite in town. (And it still is) Grilled Atlantic Salmon with herbed aioli melts in your mouth. The outside is crispy. The tender moist flesh melts in your mouth. The aioli adds a dash of flavor. The fish sits on a bed of perfectly cooked greens. One of my guests opted for a special of Pan-seared Fresh Rainbow Trout with blackberries & black pepper balsamic vinaigrette. It was a winning combination.(Add $3.00 to the prix-fixe) The Boullabaisse was prepared with sea scallops, mussels, shrimp, salmon and fresh tomato. The white bowl was enormous. The portion was gigantic.(Add $3/00 to the prix-fixe) A bowl of the best Pommes Frites is placed on every table. I defy you to leave one. They are so delicious. We all were satiated and delighted with our choices. I had raved about the Lemon Tarte and we all knew that we were going to indulge. To say it is the best in town is an understatement. They are prepared in house. I could devour several of them because they are so exceptionally good. The Fruit Crumble with ice cream was also noteworthy. It is such a satisfying feeling to have the perfect meal. My family was also delighted. It was wonderful to return to this ‘gourmet heaven.’ Make sure you check the website.www.bistrotournesol.com. It is great to read about these three talented and creative owners.

Where Do We Go Now?

Where Do We Go Now? This was the best film I saw at The Toronto International Film Festival. It won the prize as the People’s Choice Award. I laughed and I cried. This fable was an example of how we can get along in a diverse culture. It also showed the negative side of two different cultures fighting one another. The story takes place in a village in Lebanon. Christians and Muslims live side by side. The mosque is beside the church and the religious leaders get along. The town folk speak the same language and watch the same TV programs. If only it was that simple. Amale is a single mother with a crush on Rabih. He is a local plasterer. It is a riot to see them sing and dance as if the divide between them does not exist. The film dramatically opens as we watch a procession of women clad in black mournfully walking to the cemetery. It is an omen of more to come. It is then surprising to see an interlude with everyone in the town leading a peaceful life in harmony. The harmony is shattered with a newscast of trouble in the area. Unfortunately the people in the town also show their worst side. The mosque is vandalized by the Christians and the church faces damage by the Muslims. The women in town spring to action. They import a group of Ukrainian women (strippers) to divert the hostility and tension with the men. It is hilarious. The calm lasts only briefly and is once again destroyed with a hostile action to a young boy. Once again the two sides go into action. The women beg for a peaceful solution. The film is an allegory and it has a definite impact. The use of humor throughout helps to balance the destructiveness of the real issues. It was joyful to watch the women play a powerful role in the events and to use psychology to try and stop the negative behavior
