Via Norte

Via Norte

My readers must be beginning to think I am an employee of Via Norte. Not so. I am a
loyal devoted patron who loves this restaurant. Tuna is my favorite fish and this place
makes the best tuna anywhere. I have actually had this fish in many parts of the world but
I am faithful to Via Norte as the all time winner.
Three longstanding friends went out for dinner. We had dined here at the former
Cataplana. Jose was also the chef at that time. Since those days Jose Alves has purchased
the restaurant and changed the name. He has refurbished the place. It is bright and
attractive. Rodrigo will look after you as your server. He is such a gently person and so
attentive.
The Grilled Fillet of Portuguese Sardines is one of the Portuguese signature dishes.
Many of my friends have enjoyed this dish on past occasions. On this evening one friend
was anxious to try this new dish.(for her) It is served with onion confit, sweet peppers,
mushrooms and zucchini. She was delighted.
The other dining companion opted for the Organic Baby Greens Salad. It was a very
large portion. Tomatoes, cucumbers and fresh fruit are enhanced with a balsamic vinegar
dressing.
I was so pleased with the Broiled Goat Cheese Salad. Fresh arugula is my favorite green.
It has a papery taste and is so tasty on the palate. A large circle of broiled cheese was on
top and it was all flattered with cider vinaigrette.
All three of us were already filled. The portions are generous. The Portuguese bread is
fresh and crusty. I can’t stop enjoying the home cured black olives.
All three of us had to have the Pan Seared Yellow Fin Tuna. It was even better last night
than usual. The secret to the flavoring is the green, black and pink peppercorns enhanced
with garlic and herbs. Two large portions are on each dish. The plating is so tantalizing.
Many beautifully flavored vegetables were included. I can only say it was so mouth
watering that I have to go back soon for more of this.
Grilled Calamari with lemon, garlic, coriander and extra virgin oil is another
offering. The Bitoque US Prime Steak is a great favorite. It is prepared
Portuguese style and well
Seasoned with garlic, and black pepper. Home Fries are on the side. The dish is topped
with a fried egg.
Oven Roasted Capon supreme is garnished with a medium spiced piri piri sauce.
Two of us managed to completely finish our Crème Brulee. It was not too rich and the
burned sugar topping was like candy. We teased our virtuous friend who had enough
common sense to order a Fresh Fruit Salad. All three of us felt we had enjoyed the perfect
dessert.
Check out the full menu on the web. Google Via Norte.
I feel as if Via Norte is my second home. I do crave that tuna and will continue to return
for more. My friends were also delighted with the service as well as their gourmet
dinners.
Thank you Jose Alves. You are indeed the master chef. Rodrigo continues to make sure
the guests are having the best service.

Sushi Inn

Sushi Inn

My friend and I had just come from a very disturbing film. We needed comfort food and
a chance to put meaning to what we had just seen. The Sushi Inn was the perfect spot.
It is bright and vibrant. People are smiling and chatting and there is a buzz everywhere.
There is an enormous staff and I was amazed how quickly the fresh food was delivered to
the table. We both needed this positive energy.
As soon as we were seated there was nice cup of hot green tea. I still needed my glass
of wine. The place is always crowded. No wonder. The food is amazing and it is so
economical. I have dined here before
The menu is so extensive and offers many varieties of Asian food. It is served hot and
fresh.
Many Sushi Combos are listed. They include Miso soup and salad. The Sushi dishes vary
from $9.95 for Silver Sushi to the Seafood Deluxe for $12.95.
Many of the diners were enjoying the Udon Noodles. The Tempura Udon is my favorite
($7.95) A large bowl of noodle soup is presented with 2 pieces of shrimp tempura and
assorted vegetable tempura. It is more than anyone can eat and it is so delicious.
On this occasion I opted for the Tempura Appetizer. 2 pieces of shrimp as well as many
vegetables were perfectly cooked in a tempura batter that melted in my mouth. The
shrimp were enormous and succulent.
The Bento Box makes for a pretty presentation of delectable food. The Gold Box
contains 2 pcs. of shrimp, 1 pc of crab, 2 pieces of vegetable tempura, 2 pcs spring roll, 3
pieces of salmon sashimi and steamed rice. ($12.50)
You could dine nicely on several of the appealing appetizers. Tempura Tofu is deep fried
and served with tempura sauce.($3.50) Shitake Butter Yaki offers pan fried mushrooms
with garlic butter.($4.95)Heartier diners may opt for a Teriyaki special that includes Miso
soup, salad and steamed rice. Salmon Teriyaki is offered for $11.95
6 pieces make up an order of Maki sushi.
Tekka Maki is a tuna roll in 6 pieces.($4.75)
Join the lineup. It is great for family dining, single or solo. Guaranteed you won’t be
hungry and you won’t break the bank.
We arrived stressed out from the film and left in a happy satiated style.
There is free delivery within the local area and of course take out is big business.

We Need to Talk about Kevin

We Need To Talk About Kevin

I will never look at the color red in the same way again. The film begins with Eva, a
travel writer, enjoying herself at the festival in Spain where everyone gets immersed in
throwing tomatoes. That was a positive experience.
Later in her traumatic life she is photographed in front of a shelf of cans of tomato soup.
Her psychotic son loves to smother red gooey jam on bread and look at it oozing out of
the sandwich. Neighbors rebel against Kevin and spray red paint on the family house. As
you watch each symbolic red jesture you begin to prepare yourself fro something sinister.
I found this to be one of the most painful films I have ever seen.
Eva marries the gentle Franklin and they have a son Kevin. Right from the beginning
Kevin gave them problems. He cried incessantly. He was still not toilet trained as a
young boy. He was angry and surly to his mother. He was always sweet to his father.
At an early age a doctor told Eva that Kevin was a sweet boy and not to worry. It is so
obvious to the audience that this boy is in serious trouble.. You have to question why Eva
accepted so much abuse from Kevin and didn’t take him for psychiatric help. He was
not a sweet boy. I was the audience and I was terrified with each scene that he would do
something horrific. And of course he does.
Throughout the film Eva looks like she has lost her best friend. She doesn’t smile. She
wears no makeup and even her walk suggests someone carrying a heavy burden. We do
see her with makeup and a smile on 2 occasions. Her doer look is almost overdone. It
becomes unbearable. Is this great acting or too much?
Kevin is played by three actors at various stages of is life. As a teenager we see a brilliant
performance by Ezra Miller. He is amazing.
I was so pleased I attended this film with a friend because we needed to discuss it on
many levels after viewing this upsetting story..
Did Eva really dislike her son and was he reacting to her feelings? How could the father
not see what was happening in the family? Why did the parents accept such verbal abuse
from Kevin?
You will need to discuss the film to get it out of your system. It is upsetting. The drama
builds and you are sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for a disaster to happen.

W/E

The W stands for Wallis Simpson and the E for Edward, the heir to the English throne. Their story was known as the love story of the century.
Madonna was the director and apparently made the film because she was intrigued with the fact that a man would give up all his power for a woman. I was also intrigued with the love story.
I don’t for a minute believe the film totally stuck to facts but it did give a glimpse into the life style of the royals and how this story came about. I adored the costumes, the lavish sets and the historical period.
The film had a good story to tell. Unfortunately the execution of the film didn’t totally work.
Two love stories are told at the same time. The historical royal part was from a different era. A modern day love story is also told of a young American woman also called Wallis ( Wally). She is obsessed with the royal story and spends a lot of time researching information about the relationship between Wallis and Edward ( also called David) She spends a great deal of time at a current auction of many of Wallis’s material possessions. She even bids an extraordinary amount of money to purchase an item.
Wallis Simpson had previously been married twice to Americans before meeting Edward, the Duke. She was attractive, sensual and a social climber. In the film Edward falls for Simpson and cannot live without her. He gives up the throne and his family and is forced to leave England. Most of the time the couple live in France.
A parallel story is told of a young girl Wally, living in the 1990’s. She is infatuated with the royal love story. She also had been married. Her husband was a doctor but was abusive to her and totally unfaithful. Her love story begins when she meets a kind young man who really cares for her.
The film bounces around a lot between the two stories. Madonna uses a few gimmicks which were rather creative and effective. Wally ( our modern day heroine) can be seen having a discussion with the Wallis of former days.
The film needs some editing to make it run smoother. All in all I did get a glimpse into that historical story and it was fun to view the cinematography of the palatial life style.
No awards here. It was just a fun film to satisfy my curiosity.

Say Cheese

Say Cheese

This place is so new that they have not officially opened. I don’t even have a phone
listing. I have been enjoying my time researching cheese sandwiches in this city. Is this
the new ‘It food’? Establishments are opening up all over the city. What could be a better
location than Huron St and Bloor? It is situated beside the Bata Museum and across the
road from the Holiday Inn. I was walking by and noticed a sign in the window,
Chris is a co owner of this fun place. He recently worked at C5, the museum’s fancy
restaurant. I like this one better and I wish him and his partner all the best.
I opted for a Nacho Libre. It was so yummy. The cheese oozed out. All the flavors of
the avocado guacamole, jalapeno and tomato salsa married together. The sandwich was
grilled and warm. I feel like going back for another one right away. A regular sandwich is
$6.50. Premier sandwiches are prepared with higher quality cheese and are $8.50.
The Garden Vegetable is prepared with brie or goat cheese with roasted red
peppers and grilled zucchini.
A Nice Pair features brie, pear and ham.
You can also enjoy adding on items such as a fried egg, mushrooms, tomatoes or
caramelized onions for $1.00 or less.
Sloppy Chili will please you with the chili base, vegetables and jalapeno.
It is all so creative and tempting.
The sandwich was served on a wooden cheese board. Frites or a Salad are part of this
reasonable deal. The salad was fresh and adorned with tasty vinaigrette. It was served in
a small olive wood bowl on the cheese board. Only a dill pickle on the side would have
made it any better.
I already know that on my next visit (which will be soon) will be the Mushroom/ Cheese
combination.
Baking products also looked so tempting. They are made by Chris’s partner. They hope
in time to make their own bread. The baking is creative and so tasteful. I purchased two
cupcakes. One was filled with a chocolate mousse and the other had a caramel filling. A
fantastic display of creative baskets and containers for Valentine’s Day was on display.
Everything was creatively packaged in Valentine boxes and containers. Cookies, Cakes,
Cupcakes and Candies were available in a variety of presentations.
Chris is a creative young man. (and also very handsome) He has ideas for future plans.
The place hasn’t even officially opened but there were several tables of diners. I crave
Cheese Sandwiches. These will satisfy anyone’s taste buds. They are beautifully plated
on the cheeseboard. Not only do they look tantalizing they are scrumptious.
What fun to make such a discovery in my back yard. I wish them all the best.

Fannie Chadwick

Fannie Chadwick

This Annex restaurant opened one year ago. I went to the restaurant shortly after it
opened. I had reservations about the restaurant. I loved the idea of a small neighborhood
in the Annex that honored a former author and resident of the Annex, Fannie Chadwick.
I found the menu too heavy on meat and not sufficient options for vegetarians. The food
was adequate but not great.
I decided to go back on the first anniversary to see how the restaurant was doing. I was
meeting an annex resident so it was very satisfying to be able to walk to the restaurant.
We were greeted in a friendly manner. There were quite a few people at the restaurant.
We were treated to an amuse bouche in honor of the fist anniversary. Miniature potatoes
were stuffed with marinated artichoke hearts and a little scallion. They were delicious.
It all went downhill after that.
My friend ordered the Tortiere Turnover.($14.95) The pastry looked too thick and
unappealing. The meat inside apppeared to be grey looking. My friend said it was okay.
(not good enough)
I ordered the Fanny’s Fall Salad ($9.50) with raosted beets and heirloom carrots with
arugual, leeks and malt vinegar. Have you ever heard of a caramelized vinaigrette? Globs
of caramel sauce were at the bottom of the plate. Caramel on ice cream, yes. On my salad
I found it to be sickenly sweet. I asked for some bread to help get rid of the sweetness.
The cheapest type of sliced white bread was served.
The Capuucino was excellent.
I found it difficult to choose something from the menu. I ould have ordered the Smoked
Fish on marble rye with cucumber and house mayo.($9.85)
Braised Lamb Shoulder is offered with a green olive tapenade on
sourdough.(($11.95)
Beef Burger is prepared with fresh ground beef, ketchup. Mustard, mayo,
pickle.($11.95)
The restaurant does claim to offer ocean wise seafood and naturally raised meat and
poultry. I applaud them for this.
I would like to see more vegetarian options. The food lacked presentation. T is the little
details that make for a satisfying meal.
May I will return in a year to view the progress but I don’t think so.

Dupont St

The Vow

The Vow

It was Valentine’s Day and my knight in shining armor had not arrived. I decided to do
something for myself and go to an early movie. What a shock to discover the theatre
filled with young folk. Many of the young ladies were carrying single roses. It was quite
sweet. I hadn’t realized that this romantic story was the Valentine ‘go to’.
I had heard about this real life story. In fact the actual couple from this story had been on
television that very day and I was intrigued with the story.
A young couple, Paige and Leo, are madly in love. They have only been married for a
few months when they were involved in a tragic accident. Paige is thrown from the car.
She has a brain injury and has forgotten her past and actually thinks her husband, Leo is
her doctor.
Paige was a sculptor, artist who had been estranged from her parents. She can’t remember
anything about her recent past. When her parents arrive on the scene she becomes
reconnected and goes back to her family home. She doesn’t know why she was alienated
from her parents. She has no recollection of her marriage. Leo is a stranger to her.
The family live in a fancy suburb of Chicago. The life style is diametrically opposed to
the way Paige and Leo were living in their modernized warehouse style apartment in the
inner city of Chicago. Leo fears he is going to lose her permanently.
Leo is devastated and is determined to reconnect with Paige. His business as a recording
producer suffers. He gives all his attention to wooing Paige. He takes her to all their
former spots. He charms her. He wins her back and they actually remarry.
The actual couple now has 2 children and is a happy family. To this day she does not
remember anything about that past experience.
Leo is such a loving character. Channing Tatum performs the part in such a believable
way. Rachel McAdams plays the part of Paige.
The story takes place in Chicago. The best part of the film for me was viewing the scenes
of my favorite city, Chicago. The Millennium Park, the city horizon at night, the El, the
famous architectural boat tour are all shown.
The film does tell a true love story that endured through the worst circumstances. The
bottom line is that the Vow was a good Valentine type film but that holiday is now over.
The film is a ‘lightweight’ production that can probably be safely missed.

In Darkness

In Darkness

Painful beyond belief. This amazing film is the Polish contender for best foreign film of
the year. I was uncomfortable. I was in pain. I wanted to leave.
Can you imaging living with a group of people in the smelly sewers in Lvov, Poland
for 14 months. The hidden Jews were at the mercy of a Polish hero who helped them
Leopold Socha was a common thief and initially led them into the underground maze of
the sewers. He took money from them and profits from their ordeal. As time goes on he
empathizes with the hidden Jews and helps them in many ways risking his life and the
life of his family.
Every time I see a holocaust film I vow I will never return for another one. At the same
time these stories must be told. So what if I am uncomfortable I should be. These are
difficult stores that tell of a horrific period of history. I am amazed that each year a
different story appears with an unusual perspective. It all makes me so greatful for all I
have.
Before the title even shows on the screen a series of vignettes are shown. A group of
naked women run through the woods chased by German soldiers. The next image shows
them all dead. Another scene shows children playing in the streets.
The Jews of Poland were forced to live in a ghetto. The Germans pursued them. Many
were shot in the street. They were forced from their homes. Many went to a concentration
camp. It was so pathetic to see the scenes of the ghetto after the Jews had left. The homes
were ruined. Litter and furniture was strewn around the streets.
A group of citizens finds solace in the underground sewers. Leopold Socha, as well
as being a thief, worked in the sewers and knew the underground well. He led them
underground into the depths of the sewers. He provided food for them. The Jews paid
him with anything they had.
Always you are on the edge of your seat. There was such pathetic irony to witness the
dirty hungry Jews living in that muck. Overhead the congregants could be heard singing
hymns in the Catholic church.
Will Leopold Socha be caught? Will he turn in the Jews? How will the Jews survive
in this murky, filthy place. The rats were running everywhere. The dampness and
depravation was overpowering. I could almost smell it through the screen.
The hidden Jews were always being tested. They faced illness, hunger, floods and
betrayal.
The actual story was written by a young girl who survived this ordeal. She later wrote a
book that was translated to the film.
How did the actors ever play their parts? They were all so amazing. It was a remarkable
production.
It hurt from beginning to end. I had such difficulty watching and at times had to put my
head down.
This is a powerful difficult story. How hard to believe that people could survive these
conditions.

Aroma Espresso Bar

Aroma Espresso Bar

I first experienced this restaurant at their home base in Israel. The first café in Toronto is
situated on Bloor St near Bathurst. This location in Forest Hill is more elegant and well
designed. It obviously is the hot spot in the area. This is a high class coffee house with
great food. Several other locations have recently opened throughout the city
Order your food at the counter. Your name is called when it is ready. The food is fresh
and delicious. The pastries would make anyone forget their diet. You can dine heartily or
have a cup of cappuccino. It is a great people watching spot and nobody is rushed even
though the place is busy.
I set out to visit a friend’s new condominium (also very elegant) Aroma is a few blocks
away. It was such fun to walk to the coffee house and enjoy a lengthy visit.
We both chose the Double Up Combo.($8.85) You have the option of choosing two items
from the Soup of the Day/ Half Sandwich/ Chopped, Mixed Greens or Quinoa Salad. We
opted for the Mediterranean Soup. It reminded me of the famous Ribolitta soup in Italy.
It was a large bowl filled with vegetables in a tomato base. The orzo was tasty and very
filling. This soup was a winner. We each ordered the Egg Sandwich. The half sandwich
was a joke. It was enormous. I had multi grain bread that was fresh and of high quality.
The sandwich was full of flavor and also with a large portion of the egg mixture. It was
incredible.
We might have ordered from a long list of sandwiches. The Mediterranean offers grilled
eggplant, tahini, tomatoes, pickles and hard boiled eggs.
Italian Goat Cheese is prepared with goat cheese, pesto and tomatoes.
Full size sandwiches are prepared on white, whole wheat or multi grain bread.
Many of the diners were enjoying Salads. The Aroma Special ($7.30) is prepared with
mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, red onion, hard boiled egg, olives and your choice of
albacore tuna or feta cheese, all topped with a balsamic vinaigrette
A Warm Chick Pea Salad combines chick peas, tomato, cucumber, red onion, garlic
croutons, parsley, hard boiled egg, served with lemon and olive oil dressing and
tahini.($6.80) All salads are served with your choice of bread and butter.
All Day Breakfasts are a specialty. A Classic Breakfast offers 2 eggs any style
with bread butter and jam.($5.30)
This is a coffee house so you expect the coffees to be excellent. We loved our hot
cappuccinos. A variety of hot drinks is available The Marshmallow Hot Chocolate is
prepared with premium chocolate, hot milk, steamed milk, cocoa and marshmallow. Our
coffee was presented with a wrapped chocolate on the spoon
The Pastries were more than inviting but we were just too full. Muffins, brownies,
biscotti and Danish pastries are a few of the tempting goodies.
What a great treat in more ways than one. I didn’t realize time had fled and I missed my
yoga class. I prize good food. This may be a coffee house but it offers so much more.

The Innkeepers

The Innkeepers

It was bound to happen. The TIFF Bell Lightbox shows the best films. This film was even well reviewed. Maybe I have lost it. I even inquired after watching the film with a young lady in the washroom. She felt the same way as I did.

I never go to see scary horror films. I admit I felt like laughing at the scary bits. It didn’t work for me. Some parts of the film were delightful.

Claire and Luke are clerks in the Yankee Pedlar Hotel. It is about to close down. I can’t imagine why. It was so charming. The bedrooms had warm delightful flowery wallpaper. The furniture was old but with charm. The beds had comfy pillows and an attractive coverlet. I would have been delighted to visit this hotel.

There are only three guests. A woman and her child were staying at the hotel because the woman has left her husband. An old scary man is also a resident. A woman comes to spend a night in the hotel. Claire recognizes her as a famous actress and is thrilled to look after her needs. She is attending a conference.

Claire and Luke deliver fresh towels and keep the place going until the next week when it was scheduled to close.

Apparently the hotel is supposed to be ‘spooked’ by a ghost of a woman who died in the hotel. Stories claim that her ghost haunts the hotel. There were loud noises at night and strange sightings. Claire was warned not to go down into the cellar.

Claire gets ‘freaked out at times. Luke seems to be cool with it all. But then he is a strange one himself. He is always on his computer. He has a series of porn sites and is interested in the paranormal.

The interaction between Claire and Luke is funny at times. I delighted in the scenes of the old hotel. The bloody specters and loud noises were ’over the top’. Even I was not frightened. I found it to be amateurish and silly.

The story is told in 3 chapters. The epilogue carried things too far and made it ridiculous. They were warned not to go in the basement. But then there wouldn’t have been a story.

This is one you can skip and save your money and time.

Stone Grill on Winchester

Stone Grill on Winchester 51B Winchester St. 416 967 6565

What a happening! It was great fun with exquisite food. I recall the old Winchester Hotel before this renovation. It was a beer drinking landmark in Cabbagetown. The upstairs rooms are now beautifully renovated and the restaurant is exquisite. My friend and I loved the interior. The grey walls were so soothing. A bar area features lounge chairs facing a delightful fireplace. There is a calm relaxed feeling to the décor. It is a remarkable change from the previous old hotel.

Best of all was the friendly rapport amongst the staff and to the patrons. Brad is the manager. He has been in charge now for 3 years. Our servers, Christopher and Amy were so much fun. They had personality galore and made the evening memorable from start to finish. Everybody seems to have a good time working here and it shows. I can’t remember when I have had so much fun dining on excellent food.

The place is called the Stone Grill because of the type of food they mainly feature. Beef Tenderloin, Sirloin or Salmon are served to you raw on a lava rock that is extremely hot. You cut your portion in slices and it cooks as you eat. All meat dishes come with a mushroom sauce. The fish dishes come with a lemon-ginger sauce.

My friend enjoyed a large piece of the beef tenderloin. My salmon was perfect. I cut slices and allowed them to continue cooking as I ate. Each plate also had warm roasted potatoes and perfectly prepared vegetables. This is an experience. The flavor was superb and the whole exercise was such fun. We both started with a House Salad. Even this was better than most. The ginger berry balsamic vinaigrette was so flavorful. The baby spinach and other vegetables were fresh and crisp.

We were full but when I saw the giant piece of Chocolate Cake I knew I was doomed. I could have left some but on the other hand I couldn’t stop eating this three layer cake. The bottom layer was a dense dark chocolate. The middle layer was a white mousse and the top was chocolate mousse. The chocolate icing on the side of the cake was too delicious to leave behind. We noticed the young women at the next table delving into their Carrot Cake and Cheesecake.

This is a creative menu. Chef Carlos hails from Columbia. He was busy preparing all that gourmet food for the patrons. I wanted so much to tell him that I think he is a master chef and very creative.

Would you believe that Alligator and Boar are on the menu?

We discovered this gem by accident. I was looking in the computer for a different Winterlicious experience. I am not that familiar with the Cabbagetown restaurants. This was a great find. Make sure to stop in next door at Tim Horton’s. The original tin ceiling from the old hotel is absolutely magnificent. Pictures of the old hotel and the street in a different era hang on the wall

I always have fun when I dine with this friend. She is adventurous and flexible. She adores great food and always has great stories. This visit was even better because we were dining in a delightful new spot that provided a delightful ambiance and wonderful satisfying food.

Le Vendeur

Le Vendeur

I saw this film several weeks ago when TIFF Bell Lightbox was showing the 10 best Canadian films of the year. Le Vendeur is a car salesman. His is kind and thoughtful to his staff and customers. Each year he wins the award for being the best salesman.

He loves his daughter and grandson. He is a delightful character. The acting is superb.

A tragedy hits his family and it was so emotional to see Le Vendeur in pain. You can’t help but empathize with this lovely man.

I was delighted to note that this ‘must see film’ is playing again.

The French Canadian film industry produces some of the finest films. This is one of them.

Albert Nobbs

Albert Nobbs

Glenn Close does an amazing job playing a male role. I liked this film for several reasons. I adore historical pieces. We are transported to 19th century Ireland. Glen Close plays the role of the butler, Albert Nobbs. As a woman she couldn’t get employment. Her transformation is amazing. She is austere and serious. She looks like a male and walks like one as well. She is the perfect butler to the wealthy guests at the small hotel. She is also respected by the other workers in the hotel. I loved watching the dinner scenes. All the staff stood at attention with severe looks as they greeted the guests arriving for dinner. The banter in the backroom kitchen amongst the staff was such fun.

Mr. Page is also employed at the hotel as a painter. He is asked to share a bed with Albert Nobbs. What a shock to discover that Mr. Page is also a female. Nobbs tries to learn from Mr. Page because he plays the part so well. He charms the female workers and does a great job painting. He has been able to make a life for himself in this disguised role. He even has a lovely wife. (I’d love to know more about that)

The costume party at the hotel is quite ridiculous. I was amused when Mr. Page says to Albert Nobbs,” We are both disguised as ourselves.”

Albert Nobbs saves all his/her tips under the floorboards in the bedroom. His goal is to open a small tobacco shop. Albert Nobbs even dreams of marrying the young server who works at the hotel.

There are several smaller sub plots that make it all interesting. The young server (Mia Wasikowska) loves the young handyman. He sure is adorable but you know he will not amount to anything, He promises the young worker that he will take her to America. The only gift he gives her is a pregnancy. What a surprise to discover the resident doctor in bed with one of the servers.

Albert Nobbs gives gifts to the server but is shunned in romance.

The guests at the hotel are delightful to watch. You probably won’t relate to any of them but they are fun to watch.

Are there flaws in the film? Absolutely. The film does work on many levels and is good entertainment with excellent acting from several of the characters.

Glenn Close has been nominated for an Oscar for this role. She certainly is in the running.

La Petite France

La Petite France 3317 Bloor St West 416 234 8783

Maybe I have attended too many Winerlicious functions. I may be getting too critical. It had nothing to do with the subway ride out to Islington. That was actually pleasant. It had nothing to do with the company. I was meeting a dear friend. We actually geared up for this meal because my friend had sent me an article recently about the owner. It was so impressive. What an inspiring man. He has been a pastry chef, a paratrooper and a marathon runner. The owner was wearing a short sleeve red T shirt. I thought he had just come from cleaning the back room. The other gentleman server was wearing a suit and tie but was so brusque I wanted to ask,” What is your problem?’ The menu was quite inviting and offered extensive choices.

This is a charming little restaurant. It was so crowded and the waiting guests were hovering over out table. The noise level was also over the top.

The meal started in a festive mode. My friend had the Bisque de Homard. We were surprised that the Lobster Bisque had a tomato base and was so spicy. My friend said it was good but not superb.

My Caesar Salad was just the way I like it. I was pleased with the small portion because I had 2 more courses coming. The greens were crisp and the dressing was well flavored.

I had been told that the Crab Cake was a good selection.

My friend ordered the Steak with Peppercorn Sauce. The frites were excellent. The steak was once again just okay. Several of the bites were tough and inedible but they do get points for putting the sauce on the side as requested.

My Filet de Saumon Beuure Blanc was fair. The vegetables were perfectly cooked but cold. I give them credit for immediately bringing me another plate of steaming vegetables. They were perfectly prepared but had no sauce and no additional flavor. Steamed vegetables are not gourmet in my opinion. The salmon was a little overcooked and in a white flavorful sauce. The plate looked like something that would be served in a diner. Plate presentation is as important as the taste of the food.

Blackened Tilapia and Boeuf Bourginon were other options on the meal. Maybe I should have ordered the Vegetarian Pasta.

Fortunately we both licked our lips on the Lemon Tart. Yes! That was tasty and certainly enjoyed.

The menu seemed so promising. However, you can’t eat the menu. The food has to be properly prepared and presented in a tempting way. Perhaps I would have enjoyed this meal more if I had not previously had 2 superb Winterlicious experiences. I have a few more to come. I hope for better results on upcoming events .I will try to have an open mind and not be too critical.

During Winterlicious I am like a child with a new toy. It is the greatest opportunity to try new restaurants and taste the best of gourmet food in Toronto. I had not dined here before so was delighted to have a new experience in the Yorkville area. You go down a few stairs and enter a restaurant that has the feeling of being in Italy.

Peter was our server. He smiled and was gentle and pleasant throughout the afternoon. We delighted in telling him how much we were enjoying the food. He seemed so pleased with our response. It became a mutual ‘love in.’

Each year at this time my sister, cousin and myself go to a Winterlicious experience. I am embarrassed to say this was an ongoing celebration of a birthday that has long since passed. We had so many laughs but also serious conversations about many current events.

I complimented Peter on the menu. I had actually checked every menu for Winterlicious. I felt that Vaticano offered a great selection and variety. How delightful to discover that the food was also perfectly prepared. This was one fantastic lunch

Cousin BK enjoyed the Cozze Gaeta. The mussels were served in a tomato sauce. My sister was thrilled with the Calamari Fritti. The calamari was flour dusted and deep fried. I enjoyed the Mista. I knew that two more courses were going to be enjoyed and wanted a light appetizer course. The organic greens were tasty and fresh. The Vaticano dressing was light and very flavorful. We were off to a flying start. Nobody left a scrap on the plate.

BK thought the Vitello Piccata was an excellent choice. It was served in a lemon sauce. My sister thought the Spaghetti Aglio Olio was the best choice for an entrée.

Peter advised me the Salmone Alla Griglia was an excellent choice. How true! The salmon melted in my mouth. The balsamic reduction on the side of the plate further enhanced the flavor. Potato and some grilled vegetables completed the dish. It was superb.

All three of us ordered the Chocolate Truffle Cake. It was mousse like. It was creamy and full of chocolate flavor. It was amazing.

We all agreed that this was an outstanding lunch. BK wanted to return for the evening dinner. Winterlicious offers a 3 course lunch for $20.00. Dinner is $35.00

We had a chance to view the regular menu. The prices are very reasonable. The menu offers pasta and pizza suggestions. Many main entrée suggestions are listed.

We had such a good time. What can be better than a gourmet feast with good company?

Pink Ribbons

Pink Ribbons Inc.

THIS IS A MUST FILM. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NFB AND QUEBEC DIRECTOR LEA POOL FOR OPENING MY EYES ABOUT THE CULTURE SURROUNDING THE PINK RIBBON CAMPAIGNS AND CANCER.I WISH I COULD PROVIDE THIS FILM FOR ALL HIGH SCHOOLS. I FOUND IT TO BE AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE.I LEARNED SO MUCH.

I have always thought it was so generous of companies to donate part of their profits to cancer research. My eyes were opened on this.

Even the terminology that we so flippantly use needs to be rethought. One cancer ‘survivor’ stated that the term is not appropriate. She feels it is a put down to those that are not as fortunate. Even the term of ‘battling’ cancer was offensive to many who have this disease.

I was amazed at the number of functions that take place to raise money. There is a Row for Cancer, Jump for the Cause, and Jump for cure just to name a few.

Much of the documentary focuses on the corporate marketing of products for cancer. It points out how hypocritical it is for Estee Lauder and Revlon to be an advocate for pink ribbon campaigns when their own products are contributing to the problem. On one walk for the cure a drink company was sponsoring a new drink and handing out samples. The Ford company was marketing a new model of Mustang with a ‘warrior logo and KFC was offering their product in pink buckets.

Many of those interviewed felt that the companies are exploiting cancer to improve profit.

Women with stage 4 cancer were interviewed. My heart broke for them as they told their stories and how they feel about the exploitation by companies. One woman was offended by the sales of pink teddy bears.

The film shows various buildings all over the world lit up in a pink lights. Women with cancer stated that we need to find out the root cause of cancer. Not enough research is going into this discovery. Many doctors were interviewed and I was fascinated with what they had to say. A lot of women feel alienated by the overly positive sell. They call it the tyranny of cheerfulness

It is shocking to realize that every 23 seconds someone is diagnosed with cancer.

Guaranteed the film is an eye opener even if you don’t believe all that is presented. I need to do simple things like checking out my cosmetics and many cleaners. What is in the lipstick that I eat so regularly?

I was shocked. I was moved. I just wish more people could see this well documented film.
