Carlos

Carlos

I think I deserve a medal for sitting so long. The film began at 12:15 p.m. and I left the theatre at 6:15 p.m. There were two 15 minute intermissions. In three words I can sum up this extra long film: killing, smoking and sex. I didn’t even close my eyes for a minute. I was riveted to the screen and fully enjoyed this historical drama about the revolutionist known as Carlos. The film is a French production that originally was produced for television and was shown in three parts

You certainly get a bird’s eye view of the world as the master terrorist goes from country to country to do his dirty work. He travels in Germany, England, France, Amsterdam, Yemen, Syria, Hungary, Lebanon and Libya. Libya and Syria were very helpful to him in purchasing arms and giving him sanction.

The film covers 20 years in the life of Carlos formerly known as Ilich. The part is played superbly by Edgar Ramirez. I don’t know how he gained and lost weight for the different scenes.

Carlos was a world revolutionary fighting for the Palestinian cause. He was against all the imperialist countries. He bought arms in one country and then smuggled them into another. He killed his enemy without mercy. In December 1975 he stormed an OPEC conference in Vienna and took all the members as hostages. He sorted out the attending members as to friends, neutral or enemies of his cause. Many people were slaughtered during the event. He demanded and was given a plane to fly to Algeria. He took many of the terrified hostages with him. He wanted to go to Baghdad but the plane was not equipped. I couldn’t help but wonder how they were able to get a pilot and co-pilot to take on the task of flying that plane. The terrorists all had weapons and it was extremely dangerous.

He shot at an EL EL plane on a tarmac with a long armed weapon. At one time he declared,” Weapons are an extension of my body.”

He went into hiding in Yemen. He grew a beard and gained some weight. He was told that he had become a famous star known the around the world.

He negotiates with the KGB and the Stasi in East Germany. He makes deals and meets the top leaders in the countries where he is negotiating.

Always he is seen with a drink of whiskey and a cigarette. Everybody in the cast smoked continuously throughout the film. I felt as if I was physically in danger from the second hand smoke. He always had a different woman at his side. The women seemed to swoon for him. He was an attractive man.

Carlos told one of his women that he knew he would be killed one day. Actually he is in a jail in France for the rest of his life.

He had so many women and he certainly enjoyed being with them. There are two full nude scenes in the picture.

His downfall began as the communist countries began to wane in power. The Stasi was destroyed when the Berlin wall came down. Countries refused to shelter him and he was running out of places to hide. His ex-wife gave information on his whereabouts and he was kidnapped and taken back to France to face charges of murder.

At the end of the film you are told what happened to all the members of his gang. This is a most compelling story. Come prepared to sit for a long time. Bring snacks.

Via Norte

Via Norte 938 College St ( at Dovercourt) 647 348 1116 [A1]

Absolutely memorable and fantastic! The Portuguese community now has a new superb gourmet restaurant. The walls are a soft color and the paintings really enhance the space. It has a welcoming Mediterranean spirit with a lot of positive energy.

Gabriel, the manager does a fine job in greeting all the guests and making them feel welcome. He is a great source of information about the wine and food He will explain how the dish is prepared and recommend a good wine from various areas of Portugal.

Owner and Chef, Jose Alves, is a creative talented chef. It was surprising to learn that he began his career as a 13 year old in Portugal. He has cooked at some of the finest restaurants in town. No wonder the popular dishes from Portugal are so well prepared. Start out with the popular soup, Caldo Verde. Fish lovers will enjoy the Cataplana. Various fish and shrimp are prepared in a copper pot with tomatoes and herbs. Grilled Salted Cod and Grilled Whole Seabream are regulars on the menu.

Mdaniel@bridal,caeat eaters will enjoy the ‘Bitoque’ US Prime Steak with the fried egg on top. Three types of sausages are prepared at Via Norte. Even the desserts are made in house. The chef recommends the Pear Tart and White Chocolate Flan.

The crusty Portuguese bread and the black olives are a great beginning to every meal. The olives are actually from Morocco but spiced in the restaurant.

Gabriel and Chef Alves have the right combination to make this restaurant a winner

This restaurant is very busy at lunch. Do make a reservation. There are specials every day. The chef actually goes to the market daily to pick out the freshest produce, fish and meat.

This is a winner. The atmosphere is welcoming. The food is outstanding. This may be the newest ‘kid on the block’ but it is certainly one of the best.

Via Norte is a large premise. It is suitable for small or large parties and various types of functions. The menu is varied and offers many choices to suit all tastes.

Nowhere Boy

Nowhere Boy

I think I am losing my mind. I was interested in seeing this film. I love the Beatles music and know very little about the life of John Lenin .The Beatles are historical in the music world and it is always fascinating to find out the background of someone famous.

Halfway through the film I felt I had already seen it. I recognized some of the scenes. I came home and checked my Film Festival notes. It wasn’t there. Perhaps I saw a preview but it was weird seeing a film I recognized but couldn’t recall having seen.

We first meet young John as a teenager at school. He is always in trouble with the head master. In fact it was the headmaster who told John that he ‘would go nowhere.’ At first I thought he was living with his parents. I soon learned that the woman was his Aunt Mimi. She was always stern and doer in her look. I sensed she really cared for John but didn’t overtly show it. The man of the house was Uncle George. John and George had such a good time together. No wonder John was heart broken when his uncle suddenly died. John hugs Aunt Minnie after George’s death and she brushes John aside and says,”Let’s not be silly.”

A young buddy helps John to find his mother, Julia, who it seems only lives across a big field. She is a very attractive woman but extremely child like and silly. She has had mental problems in the past and is living with her caring husband and two adorable daughters. She is actually Aunt Minnie’s sister but the two have nothing to do with one another.

John builds up a relationship with his mother, Julia and she encourages him to do whatever he wants and accepts his bad behavior at school. She actually flirts with John and acts inappropriately for a mother. She does encourage him with his music. She loves music and likes to sing. Julia’s husband doesn’t like the relationship.

John is pulled between the loyalty for Aunt Mimi and his need to be with his mother.

John is interested in music and starts a rock and roll band. At one point Aunt Mimi sells his guitar because he was suspended from school. Later she becomes more congenial and is proud of John.

This is a good story of a young man growing up and trying to find himself. He is torn between wanting to be with his real mother and appreciating all that his Aunt Mimi did to bring him up.

We are never told that the small rock and roll group goes on to greatness. The film deals with the teen age years of John Lenin. Aaron Johnson does a great job in the role of John Lenin. Kristin Scott-Thomas is also great as the stern Aunt Mimi. Anne Marie Duff plays Julia, the mother. The cast all performs well.

It is a touching story. All viewers are aware of the great success of John Lenin as an adult. Probably very few knew anything about him as a young lad.

Score: A Hockey Musical

Score: A Hockey Musical

I can’t believe this was the opening film for TIFF. It is not up to the standards of the Film Festival.

It is definitely Canadiana. What could be more Canadian than a hockey game played in Canada especially one set to music? I did love seeing all the scenes set in Toronto.

The film opens with the singing of Oh Canada and we see shots of young kids playing hockey in a variety of places; the street, stadiums, outdoor rinks and backyards. This was my favorite scene in the film. The children in the audience seemed to love it. I was entertained but that doesn’t make this a good film.

Farley, a 17 year old youth, has been home schooled. His parents are pacifists. Farley loves to skate on the outdoor rink and plays hockey in a pick up type of atmosphere. He is discovered as a hockey player with a lot of potential and is sent to Brampton to play with the team. I loved the line when he states, to his parents,” I’m going to Brampton not to Bosnia.” He has never played any team sports before. The players were all so different from anything he had encountered. In his first game he scored 4 goals and 2 assists. Violence is everywhere. Farley refuses to fight and just takes the taunts and the punches. He is an amazing hockey player and the team needs him. An agent gets him contracts for high paying commercials.

The media play up the fact that he won’t fight and that is just not the way to play hockey. His team ostracizes him. His parents are disgusted with the roughness of the game and want him to quit. Farley states the he thought he had it all but then everything was in doubt.

While all the hockey nonsense takes place we see the platonic relationship between Farley and his next door neighbor, Eve. She really is adorable. They have been best friends forever. She is an aspiring cello player. She really is in love with Farley but dares not tell him for fear of breaking up a good sibling like relationship.

It is a bit like a Bollywood film in that songs break out at all times. But then this is a musical. It seems strange to see hockey players singing and dancing on the ice.

The central issue is whether violence is necessary to hockey. At one point Farley leaves the team because he has been so badgered by the players and the coach. His parents also didn’t want him to play.

Girlfriend Eve helps him to see the light. He really does want to play hockey and goes about convincing the team and the coach that violence is not necessary. Team action is the way to win.

I do have to admit that it must have been difficult to find a young man who can sing, act and skate. Young Noah Reid has the challenge of playing Farley and he is a talented young man. Olivia Newton –John plays the role of the mother. She probably is the best singer of all the cast. The father is played by Marc Jordan. He is not a singer and is very weak, in my opinion. Walter Gretsky does have a walk on role and he is delightful.

Maybe I have just seen too many really good films lately and this pals in comparison.

Tales from the Golden Age

Tales From The Golden Age

I just returned from a few days in sleepy Peterborough. I unpacked and felt the need for a long walk. I also had to get my weekly ‘fix’ at the TIFF Box Lightbox. I am constantly amazed at the continued fine caliber of films playing at the 5 cinemas. Every film I have seen has been exceptional. I love to see the crowds milling about and enjoying all the facilities.

Tales From The Golden Age are based on legends from Romania during the Ceausescu years. The stories are funny but no doubt portray how difficult life was under that regime.

The film begins with the robust sound of a full male chorus. How glorious!

In the first story we learn that some very high officials are coming for an inspection to a small village. Lesser officials are giving orders as to how everything must proceed. We see how poor everyone is. The paint on the government building is peeling. The roads are full of pot holes and the ground seems parched. The homes are small and in poor condition. The lesser officials arrive for the initial inspection. The people of the village greet them in costumes waving flags. A fruit and vegetable stand has been set up on the road. It is so totally incongruous with the rest of the village.

The officials tell them that the cows must be removed because some Indian officials are coming. They need to find sheep. They are ordered to get pigeons but nobody has any. The little local fair (1 ride) has to be dismantled. All the changes are made only to hear that the official trip is cancelled. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

In another story a driver of a truck carrying chickens is given unreasonable orders. He is not to stop. He must not feed the chickens and he must arrive at his destination by evening. He becomes friends with the lady who runs a small inn. He gives her eggs to sell and they both make a little profit. When the driver returns to his truck he discovers that one of his tires has been stolen.

In one scene the dignitaries are offered a ride on the electric swings that goes in a circle. All the officials get on the ride and it seems to go on forever. The mayor is getting ill and nobody can stop the ride because everybody was on the contraption. Nobody was left behind to work the mechanism. It was hilarious to see a shepherd going by and complaining that the officials were all having a party while he had to work and he walks right past them without knowing they require help.

One young man has discovered a scam to earn him money. He pretends he is from the Ministry and has been ordered to collect samples of water for testing. The gullible people fill an empty glass bottle with water. The young man later pours out the water and sells the empty bottle to make money.

All the scenes clearly show the poverty. The fraud and the scandals are a result of the people trying to cope with the conditions in this dreadful system.

The film is very creative. The actors are fantastic. The film is also entertaining but I certainly learned a great deal about the conditions in Romania at that time.

Wall Street

Wall Street Money :Never Sleeps

This film was not on my schedule. I went to Peterborough to hear my grandson play jazz. We went to the Canoe Museum. We walked the downtown and still had hours before the evening gig. Wall Street was playing across thee road and seemed inviting.

I am now so pleased I saw this film. It may be fiction or based on actual people. It didn’t matter. It gave me an insight into the fraud and back door trading of some large companies on Wall Street. It also helped me to understand the recent financial crisis in 2008. I saw the type of characters that seem to be amoral and think nothing of dealing dirty behind the backs of colleagues with the end result of hurting so many of the ‘average Joes’ who invested with them.

I confess I also had another reason for going. Michael Douglas is a sick man and who knows if he will make another film. I sure hope he does. He is masterful in Wall Street playing the part of Gordon Gekko. We first meet him when he is released from jail for insider trading and fraud. We quickly learn the he is capable of acting without scruples. His only daughter has nothing to do with him because of the things he has done in the past. Within a few years he is living the good life in a fancy apartment and working in London England.

A young upcoming money manager, played by the adorable Shia LaBeouf, becomes attracted to Gordon’s daughter. He tries to get father and daughter back together gain. As the film progresses we find out more information about hidden finances between the daughter and father.

There is a lot of conflict both in the business sense of the ‘big rollers’ on Wall Street as well as in the personal lives of the main character.

Josh Brolin seems to be playing in many movies lately. He is superb as one of the wealthy crooks with no moral integrity and doesn’t care who he hurts in the process.

Susan Sarandon has a small role as the mother of the young money manager. She is always in debt and borrowing money from her son.

The cinematography was superb. I loved the aerial views of New York. The bustling city scenes were beautifully shown.

The film works on many levels. The personal story was gripping. Human dynamics are always interesting. I was totally fascinated by the Wall Street dealings. We are all only too familiar with the financial collapse in the past few years. This film gives an insight into part of the problem. I loved the statement given near the end of the film:”The definition of insanity is doing it over and over getting the same results.”

This is a film well worth seeing even if I had to go all the way to Peterborough to see it and I am glad I did.

Secretariat

Secretariat

Today has been a miracle day with the rescue of the Chilean miners. It seemed fitting that I should see a film about another miraculous story. We all know the ending. Secretariat won the three horse races that are considered the most prestigious in the United States. No horse has since beat the record.

I like to see a film where I know what is going to happen. It is then interesting to look at the execution of the familiar story.

There was emotion and excitement. Diane Lane is one of my favorite actors and she did a fine job of playing the owner of Secretariat. She is so attractive and I enjoyed looking at all the lovely dresses she wore to the races.

We first meet Mrs. Penny Chenery in her family home. She has four children and life seems to be full. Her mother dies and later her father leaving her as the owner of the large family farm with many excellent horses. A new foal is born with great promise. Mrs.Chenery hires the best trainer and jockey. They groom the beautiful horse for the big races. The horse is named Secretariat. Secretariat goes on to make history in winning the three top races in the United States. She made record time and even won the Belmont over 30 laps ahead of the second horse. No horse has since beat that record.

There are problems along the way and there are other horse trainers and owners who are against her. Mrs. Chenery is one strong woman and she tirelessly fights to have her beloved horse a winner.

It was interesting at the end of the film to learn what later happened to the trainer and jockey. I was fascinated to learn that the jockey is from New Brunswick and still lives there. He is in a wheel chair as a result of an accident on a horse.

The story is historical. I found it better than I expected and even was emotional at certain aspects of the story.

If it is a rainy day and you have nothing better to do this film will keep you occupied.

Lisbon by Night

Lisbon By night 802A Dundas St West 416 603 6522

It’s fiesta time. It is gourmet dining time. It is like being in Portugal. It is so much fun. My only problem is my increased waist line and I still think it is worth it.

The minute you climb the stairs to the second floor of this authentic Portuguese restaurant you are in for a special evening. I have now dined here three times and am already looking to return. I have been so fortunate to be greeted by the best server in town, Susanne. She has become part of the family. The charming owner also circulates and treats every guest as if they are her personal friend. Every time I have gone to this restaurant I see owners from other Portuguese restaurants dining there. That alone is a recommendation for Lisbon by Night.

The Fish Rodizio is truly a Festival de Peixe. Imagine all you can eat….fresh grilled fish for $24.00. Three of us began with a large bowl of flavorful Fish Soup. It was so delicious and we all finished our large bowl knowing that a greater feast was about to begin. All evening platters of fresh grilled fish were served by Susanne. You take what you like and it keeps being passed around all evening. Can you imagine having salmon, tuna, grouper, sea bream, calamari, shrimp and kingfish all for one dinner? We did it and ate it all. Each time I have enjoyed over 6 types of fish. The food comes until you literally beg a finish to the fine dining.

The very best of Portuguese bread is placed on the table with carafes of fine olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The cured black olives could satisfy my hunger pains any day. The roasted miniature potatoes are the best. I always want to put some in my back pocket. Rice and salad are also served.

I highly recommend the Fish Festival.

One of my guests ordered Lisboa c. Gambas. Translated that was a picture perfect platter of grilled tender steak. Two giant shrimp were placed on top. Underneath small roasted Portuguese potatoes and brussel sprouts completed this magnificent dish.($26.95)

The Carne de Porco a Alentejana offers marinated pork with sautéed clams, wine, potatoes and cilantro.($19.95)

Two hungry diners can enjoy the Cobinacao de Marisco. This mixed seafood plate offers lobster, crab, shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari ($77.50 for 2)

Paella is a gourmet combination of saffron rice, chicken, pork, shrimp, calamari, white fish, scallops, clams, mussels, green peas and peppers.($58.50)

The menu is an extensive offering of a variety of special dishes. Both seafood and meat are widely available.

Often Portuguese music is live and sometimes Fado is the music of the night.

Nobody goes hungry here. You are so well treated and the food is great. Come hungry and be prepared to make this feast a long evening’s entertainment. Even the coffee was declared to be the best. A delicious dark chocolate treat was on the side of the coffee cup.

As if we didn’t eat enough we shared slices from a grilled whole pineapple coated with cinnamon. The flavor exploded in my mouth.

Lisbon By Night also likes to cater for weddings, showers and all types of parties. They have a private room on third floor and are prepared to make arrangements for flowers, music and decorations.

This is a dining experience. Guaranteed you will also have a good time.

Kubo Lounge

Kubo Lounge 413 George St. North Peterborough

1 -7050-874-0940

Peterborough is such a quiet city. At 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday all the downtown shops were closed. I do recommend the Canoe Museum if you are staying in Peterborough. We were really thrilled with our accommodation at the boutique hotel Peterborough Inn & Suites Hotel at 312 George St North. There was a fireplace in the bedroom and the bathroom was completely renovated. I loved the lush white towels.

My dear friend Estelle agreed to come with me so I could hear the Alex Goodman Trio playing at Kubo Lounge.

We were delighted with the premises. The silver tin ceiling is a work of art. The unique lighting at the bar was very creative. The dark floors and wooden tables give a smart look to this restaurant. There was a very friendly atmosphere. I was amazed how quickly the place filled up. By the time we left it was standing room only. Christina was our server for the evening. We watched how she ran the whole evening looking after the multitude of people. Yet, she was always helpful and charming. Even the owner came over to see if all was well.

Most of the music played was by Felonius Munk. Alex Goodman was as always great on guitar and chaired the gig, His bass player and drummer were superb. The trio played so well together and we loved the music. It was apparent by the applause that the audience was really enjoying the music.

We were starving and looking forward to a great meal. We started with a Cheese Platter.($15.00) There was a variety of cheeses, crostini, marinated olives and Proscuito. This kept us very happy until our dinner arrived. We did consider the Artichoke, Feta and Olive Tapenade as an appetizer.($10.00)

Estelle took the suggestion of the owner to try the Steamed Chicken specialty of the evening.($!6.00) The chicken was sitting on a bed of bok choy and the sauce had a wonderful aroma. (and flavor) A side dish of rice was included to make for a totally satisfying meal.

I opted for the Grilled Swordfish over Nicoise Salad.($16.00) Swordfish and tuna are my favorites. I don’t know what herbs were on the fish but I can safely say it was one of the best pieces of fish I have ever eaten. The salad was crisp and fresh and the vinaigrette really complimented the greens.

Alex has played here once a month since the summer. He knows the menu well. I ordered a Hamburger for him to enjoy during a break.($!6.00)

The Green Chilli Chicken Curry is served with radish, green beans and zucchini and Jasmine rice.($!6.00)

Our server recommended the Thai Boulibase with Swordfish, mussels and Shrimp.($18.00) We’ll save that for the next time.

There were several specials listed for this evening. We delighted in watching the platters being delivered to the various tables. This is a popular jazz spot but obviously the jazz fans also know that the food is superb.

It was amazing to see how quiet the street was. I guess everybody in town knew that the Alex Goodman Trio was playing. They also know that Kubo is a place of delicious food.

What a complete evening!

Howl

Howl

It is interesting to have lived through the development and demise of many art theatres in Toronto. The International Cinema and Town Cinema were favorites for many years. It is hard to believe but the Carleton Cinema showed the best and newest films when it first opened. The Cumberland also guaranteed the best of new films. The Royal is still and art house but only shows films in the evening and weekends.

September 12 changed everything for film goers in Toronto when the TIFF Bell Lightbox officially opened. I feel so privileged to be living in the downtown area of this city. 4 floors of dining, art, lectures and cinema. The building is open every day of the year. The best of the ‘oldies’ is available as well as current national and international superb films. Many of these films will probably never play at other theatres and certainly aren’t available in smaller towns or cities. I could go to TIFF Bell Lightbox without even knowing what is playing and be guaranteed several options of great cinema. The programmers are very skilled in their work. It is also the most comfortable place to watch good cinema. Five auditoriums show films daily.

I found Howl an extraordinary film. I was mesmerized and learned so much. It was like a full English course (in one sitting) on the poet Allen Ginsberg.

James Franco is magnificent as he plays the part of Allen Ginsberg. He reads the poems with such emotion and intensity. The poem Howl is used as a central focus for the story.

Allen Ginsberg ( Franco) talks about his life and his loves. He reads many of his literary works.

While he is reading his poems visual images are cast on the screen, He claims that reading poetry is a meditative experience.

The poem Howl is charged with obscenity. The trial scene was an education in itself. All lawyers and literary students will find this scene fascinating. Some of the words may be shocking but the lawyer proved that the words were valid. .He claimed that the objectionable words were necessary. It was argued that the trial would bring attention to this type of literature.

Fortunately the judge agreed that the poetry is literature and should remain as written. He stated that an author should be allowed to express his own words. “Freedom must be protected”, he said.

Allen Ginsberg was in a mental institution for some time. He claims he got himself out when he promised not to be a practicing homosexual. At the end of the film we learn about the early deaths of so many of his friends. Allen Ginsberg died at the age of 70. He is considered one of the most celebrated poets in America.

This superb film is a fine example of the unique films being shown at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

The Concert

The Concert

If you like Tchaikovsky you will enjoy the music in the film. Is that enough for you because there isn’t much more. The plot is so implausible. This detracts from the magic of the music.

We quickly learn that the main character, Andrei Filipov, had been a leading conductor at the Bolshoi Theatre. 30 years prior he was removed from his job in the middle of a concert because of his support for Jewish and Roma musicians. Andrei was totally humiliated and began to work as a janitor at the same theatre. He could be seen listening to the practices and you know he is mentally still conducting.

In Paris there is a last minute cancellation at the Theatre du Chatelet and Andrei somehow manipulates to get the job. He also is able to find all the former musicians, get passports and whatever to come to Paris. Can you just imagine?

This was supposed to provide some humor to the story because these musicians were a sorry mess. Most had not played for a long time and weren’t up to the standards of the fine theatre in Paris. It was a sorry sight to see the musicians running ‘amuck’ in Paris.

There is a side plot when we learn that the beautiful violin soloist has a connection to the conductor. It was melodramatic but I did like the fairy tale plot.

There is nothing more to say. You may like the contrived plot and the silly shenanigans it takes for the musicians to be able to perform the concert in Paris.

The Concert is written and directed by Radu Milhaileanu.

I did find it interesting to read that he was born in Romania and was already 5 when he learned he was Jewish. His father had escaped from a labor camp and then changed his name. Radu currently lives in France. His previous films also touch on Jewish issues.

It was such a good idea but it just doesn’t come off.

Patisserie La Cigogne

Patisserie La Cigogne 1626 Bayview Ave. 416 487 1234

You don’t always have to dress up or spend a lot of money to enjoy fine dining. I have just discovered a perfect little breakfast or lunch spot. The food is outstanding and the service very friendly. The best part is staring at the fancy fresh pastries in the cooler. They are works of art. There is such a variety of cakes and pastries. Packages of cookies are available. Don’t forget to check the chocolate counter.

My friend Yolanda and I like to meet in a friendly quiet spot to enjoy a little lunch and have a good chat. It was within walking distance for Yolanda and I happily agreed to try out a new spot.

The breads and pastries are prepared daily. You know it is fresh and I can now state that the bread is outstanding.

All day brunch is available. Crepes with chicken, mushrooms, roasted red pepper and cheddar are a great way to start any day.($7.95) Provencal Omelette features tomato, onion, ham and cheese with a baguette.($8.25) Yolanda ordered this dish and claims it is her favorite. She dines here often and knows the menu well.

Many patrons like to purchase a whole Quiche to take out ($26.00). It is also possible to order a slice in the restaurant. Garden Fresh Quiche is filled with mushrooms and spinach.($8.75) Smoked Salmon Quiche is tasty with smoked salmon, brie and leeks.($8.75)

The Baguette Sandwiches were very popular on this day. No wonder because the bread is so delicious. La Normandie is a good size baguette filled with brie, cucumber and apple. The Vegetarian offers fresh sprouts, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, cheese and avocado spread. The Baguettes are all $6.95.

If you plan to visit on Saturday or Sunday make sure you order the Tarte Flambee ($9.95) Alsatian style pie crust is served with bacon, chopped onion and cream cheese and baked in a stone oven.

I didn’t want a whole baguette so asked if I could have the Tuna Salad on the plate. It was the best tuna I have ever tasted. It was placed on a bed of baby spinach with fresh slices of tomato and cucumber. Was I ever happy about that order!

I can’t wait for the Chocolate Festival from October 22 – November 7. If you buy a chocolate croissant you get one free. Buy one chocolate dessert and get another free one. If you purchase a box of 12 truffles you will get a box of 6 free. What a deal!

I purchased a package of Thanksgiving Home Made Cookies. They melted in my mouth.

I love this trendy little patisserie. Thierry Schmitt is a French Master Pastry Chef. Just go and look. Guaranteed you will purchase something and love every bite.

Das Rheingold

Das Rheingold The Metropolitan Opera HD Live

I waited in great anticipation for the first opera of the season. It was beyond magic. Not everyone is a fan of Richard Wagner. I loved the music and fortunately every singer was superb. I don’t know where they found so many giants to sing the roles. Several of the male characters were larger than life and their voices were magnificent.

It was interesting that the character Freia, sung by Wendy Bryn Harmer had barely a few notes to sing but yet she played a prominent role. Her acting was superb. Every facial gesture was so well portrayed. This is the beauty of the Met high definition performances by satellite. The camera can zoom in on a face or gesture and the whole screen is filled with that image. Everybody has a front row seat magnified.

The opera was in 1 act so there was no intermission. I love the customary interviews and discussions that take place at intermission.

We were treated to segments of a rehearsal before the opera started. It gave us a chance to see behind the scenes the unbelievable stage set up.

Robert Lepage (the master of set designs) was responsible for the production and sets. They were the most remarkable I have ever seen. It brought opera right into the 21st century. A series of wide planks were on a hydraulic system. The opera singers walked on these planks as they lifted and descended allowing us to perceive the river below and the heavens above. Several of the performers were on harnesses and they floated in space. The lighting added to the perfection of the set.

It was a memorable performance.

Usually I read the introduction before the opera. I tried and found it so confusing with all the names. It was very interesting to note that during the performance there was no trouble in following the plot.

Encore performances can be viewed on November 20 and November 29. Don’t miss it.

I now look forward to:

Boris Godunov on October 23

Don Pasquale November 13

Don Carlo December 11

I find the opera stimulating and culturally very satisfying. What an experience. I am able to see the very best of opera directly from New York. It is so amazing that 30 countries receive the live satellite performances. There are many theatres in this city showing the performances. Each performance has two encore dates.

You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger

Call me obsessive. It is a fact. I was working on a presentation for my book club and preparing for 6 guests the next day for lunch. I managed to fit this film into a tight schedule because I am a big fan of Woody Allen. He wrote and directed the film. I think he is a creative genius. I have seen all of his films. It is true that some are better than others but his latest puts him right back on the road to success. It is vintage Woody Allen and I loved every second.

Every character in the film is in crisis but it is not depressing or a downer. In fact I had a smile on my face throughout.

Helena gets dumped by her husband Alfie. Alfie is played by Anthony Hopkins and this certainly is a different type of role for him. He is delightful. Alfie wsnts to regain his youth He takes up with a real floozy who is much younger than his daughter. She dresses in very controversial attire and obviously is out for what she can get. She spends his money big time and poor Alfie is not as happy as he would like to be. It was hysterical to see Alfie at a dance hall with his lady. She is in skin tight and skin showing clothes. He has a wool vest and a jacket. A young man asks her to dance and what a dance it was. Poor Alfie looked so forlorn.

Helena also has her problems. After being dumped by Alfie she took up with a clairvoyant ( a real fraudster) and didn’t make a move or decision without consulting this silly fortune teller. She also became a real pest when she kept barging in on her daughter, Sally ( Naomi,I Watts), and husband Roy.(Josh Brolin)

Sally and Roy are also having problems. Roy’s book is just not coming together and they re living off money from Helena. Sally is so frustrated because she wants to open a gallery of her own and doesn’t have the money. She currently is employed by an art gallery. The owner is played by the very handsome Antonio Banderas. Sally has her eye on her boss. Roy has his eye on the beautiful girl who moved into an apt across the alley.

Nobody is satisfied and it is like a game of musical chairs. Everyone keeps looking for happiness in a different direction only to find that things are not working.

It is a first rate cast. In typical Woody Allen fashion there is a lot of voice over. It is as if the speaker is talking to you personally in the audience. I love it. The music is also so appropriate . When You Wish Upon a Star plays at the end and so appropriately tells the theme of the film.

There are antics throughout and it is rollicking good fun. At the same time I did have some pity for the pathetic characters who couldn’t be satisfied with what they had and thought the fields looked greener elsewhere.

Well done Woody Allen.

Globe Bistro

Globe Bistro 124 Danforth Ave 416 466 2000

Without doubt this is one of the finest gourmet restaurants in the city. The beige walls are so warm and soothing. The large art works are subtle in color and fine in form. It is all very zen like. The upper gallery is a great place to look down on all the action. The place was full but it never was noisy. I found it all to be an ethereal experience. The servers all wore black shirts embossed in white with the word ’Globe’. The service is the finest. Everyone was so attentive and friendly. I have previously had dinner here and found it to be exceptional. Now I claim that the brunch experience was also a winner. I can’t wait to return in the near future for lunch.

My lunch companion chose the Globe Quiche.($12.00) 100 mile organic eggs are used and a side salad of greens with Saskatoon vinaigrette made for a perfect brunch item. We both considered the Ontario Goat’s cheese Crepes.($11.00) Cider poached apples are prepared with Honeywagon Farms maple butter, hazelnut chantilly and cassia bark sugar.($11.00)

We watched the diners at the next table enjoying their creative plate of Eggs Benedict.($13.00) Two poached eggs are served with confit pork, herbed buttermilk biscuit, hollandaise and fingerling potato hash.($13.00)

Wellington Country Rib Eye Burger is offered with cheese curds, pancetta, house made pickles, Yukon frites and smoked ketchup.($!5.00)

I know I had the winning dish on the menu. The Vegetarian Omelette of the day ($12.00) was the best I have ever tasted. Making a good omelette is not as easy as it may sound. Too often it is overcooked and the eggs are dry. The omelette was moist and it all melted in my mouth. Red peppers and cheese were infused inside. The fingerling potato salad had a mustard dressing that was so delicious and the greens salad was enjoyed to the very last piece of arugula.

I am almost ashamed to say that we devoured a half portion of a Basket of Baked Goodies.($6.00) Everything was so delicious. We shared a scone. It melted in my mouth. It was so good I could have eaten another one. We also shared a muffin and peach Danish. I couldn’t believe that I had turned into such a glutton. When food is that good it is a shame to leave anything on the plate. A good long walk after brunch eased the guilt but I remain with the memory of a delightful afternoon and a perfect meal.

The Rex

The Rex (repeat reminder) 194 Queen Street 416 598 2475

This is not a review of where I have been but rather of an upcoming event. Many friends have asked about attending one of Alex’s performances. He has been busy all summer with composing music and applying for grants. He has plans for a new CD in the coming year. Most of Alex’s gigs have been private venues or out of town. I was so excited to hear of the upcoming gig on October 6 at the Rex. from 9:30 p.m.

All the music played by the Alex Goodman Quintet will be music composed by Alex.

I look forward to hearing the new music.

Alex Goodman guitar.

Max Roach drums.

Nick Morgan sax

Darcy Myronuk piano

Dan Fortin sax

The Rex offers a variety of drinks and food. You can have a snack or heartier fare. I have enjoyed their sandwiches on many occasions. Nachos or Spring Rolls are available for a light snack.

Alex’s goal is to perform many of the selections that will be part of his new CD. This is an opportunity to hear the music before it is officially produced.

I hope to see you there.

The Social Network

The Social Network

I can’t stop thinking about this film. It is amazing. I joined Facebook a while ago to see what it is all about. I quickly decided it was not for me and I don’t want any part of it. At the same time I do concede that Facebook is amazing and complex. I suppose the network is positive in keeping people in touch from all over the world. It also can be destructive to someone’s reputation when pictures and stories are told behind someone’s back. It has ruined many a person’s life. The film tells the story of the genius behind the evolution of Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg is indeed a whiz at the computer. He is also socially inept. It was humorous and also pathetic to watch him trying to converse with his girlfriend, Erica. It didn’t last too long.

While he was at Harvard he conceived of the idea of a social network on the computer. The year was 2003. At Harvard he was able to get into the files of the students and to use the information for publishing social information on the web. His good friend Eduardo became the financial officer and the two created the monster known as Facebook. Apparently 650 students signed up the first day. It wasn’t long before they had a million members.

Problems arose when twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss originally tried to get Mark to develop a network for the students at Harvard. They were rich and had many connections. In fact they later sued Mark and won millions of dollars when they charged Mark with stealing their ideas. He was also charged with breach of security.

Mark was such a nerd that he was seen working at his computer while others were partying around him. There were some heavy duty parties at the time with the Harvard students. How much is true I don’t know. It is fact that the twins won a law suit and did make a lot of money.( many millions) Mark could be so ruthless at times.

Sean Parker becomes a big roller in the enterprise. He is the founder of Napster and becomes involved with Mark. He manipulates and gets totally immersed in Facebook. He is a big party boy and is shown with drugs and many women. He tries to oust Eduardo from the company. It was shameless of Mark to sit back and allow Sean to be so ruthless.

I found it totally fascinating to watch the development of the story. Mark is such an unusual character and it was interesting to see him working to develop this mammoth computer program.

Mark Zuckerberg is played by Jesse Eisenberg. Already there is talk about the Oscars. His performance is masterful. He talks so quickly it is hard to follow him at times. Some of the lines are priceless. Always he is in character and portrays the part so well.

This is an excellent film from a historical perspective. It is an amazing character study and the performances are superb.

Waiting for Superman

Waiting For Superman

An absolutely brilliant documentary! I was emotionally upset from watching this disturbing film about the state of education in the United States. I truly feel that our system is not quite as desperate but we all need to pull up our socks and do a better job for the students of today and the adults of tomorrow.

President after president talked about the need of uplifting the educational system. It was fascinating to see all Presidents from Ronald Regan up touting the need to upgrade the system. So why has it declined instead of progressing? I will never forget George W Bush’s mandate of ‘No student left behind.”

The United States ranks very low these days as compared to other countries. The film tries to analyze the problem. It is all presented in a very interesting manner. At times we are introduced to key figures in the educational system. Several children are interviewed and their parents talk openly about what is happening. Animation is used at times to make a point. It is all shocking and very disturbing.

Anthony Washington, an educator stated that it was the saddest day when he learned that Superman was not real. He claims that nobody has enough power to save us.

Several of the parents tell us of the horrendous conditions in the schools. Apparently Washington D.C. is the worst of all. The schools are run down. The success rate is non existent. The teachers are exhausted and frustrated. The reading scores have actually declined since 1971.

One father drives by his old school and talks about all his former buddies who are currently in jail. It is staggering to learn how much it costs to keep all the prisoners in jail. That money could do so much to better the educational system.

A school superintendent in Washington explained how the various school boards do not work together and as a result there is miscommunication and waste of money, talent and energy. The school boards, the federal and state boards do not work together in harmony.

One of the major problems is tenure of the teachers. The union is very powerful and it is almost impossible to get rid of a bad teacher. What often happens is what is labeled as ‘pass the trash’. Bad teachers get transferred to another school but very often another transferred teacher gets posted to that school. (I have seen the same thing happen right here in our own system) Lack o funding is a major issue.

Bill Gates testified before congress and stated that it is sad that engineers had to be recruited from India and other countries because we could not furnish enough well qualified applicants.

I was broken hearted to watch one mother cry. Her daughter was not allowed to go to her graduation because the mother lacked the funds to pay all the school costs.

We see some of the charter schools in Harlem. They are working hard to overcome the problems. In some cases the length of the school day and year has been extended. The problem is that it is very difficult to get into these schools and a lottery is held. In one school there were 35 places available but there were 700 applicants. We see the look on the faces of the children and their parents when their name is not called for the lottery. It virtually dooms them to a poor education and less chance to advance in the world.

We are told that the system is broken and we need to fix it.

Let’s hope that the appropriate people see this film and begin acting.

Trigger

Trigger

A new movie star has moved into town. It isn’t a person. The Tiff. Bell. Lightbox is such a clever innovation and has been brilliantly executed. The complex is the new home for the Toronto International Film Festival. It only opened on Sept 12 and already is a bustling energetic complex. It promises to be open 365 days of the year. There are 5 beautifully outfitted auditoriums, a gallery, three restaurants, a learning centre and much more. Very friendly guides greet you as you enter the building and make sure you feel welcome and know where to go. Excellent restored films are often shown. The best of new international and Canadian material is on the roster. Music, art and film will surely make this new star shine brightly.

Today I took in the very creative multi-media display in the gallery called Essential Cinema. Large projections are shown on a variety of screens. Costumes, posters and artifacts are displayed from some of the best films ever made.

I want to support good Canadian film. Trigger can be seen on many levels. It is brilliant. I think I went initially to the showing because it was the last film made by Tracy Wright before her death. She was Don Mackellar’s partner. He also is in the film. It is directed by Bruce McDonald and written by Daniel MacIvor. Sarah Polley even has a walk on part.

Molly Parker and Tracy Wright are the true stars of the film and their performances are excellent.

Molly Parker plays the part of Kat. She is currently a TV executive living in Hollywood and very full of herself. She comes back after 10 years to see Vic, her former musical partner, brilliantly played by Tracy Wright. Vic and Kat had been duo performers in a band and are going to do a one night stand together.

Their relationship is the central issue in the film. Vic arrives early at the restaurant where she is to meet Kat. You may recognize Canoe as the restaurant. Vic is furious that she was kept waiting. They hiss and spar with one another and the lines just keep coming. One minute they hug and kiss each other. The next minute they are slinging barbs at one another. I felt as if I was at a ping pong match.

Vic goes off to the washroom for a ‘quick fix.’ Kat comments on the book the Spirituality of Imperfection that Vic was carrying with her.

Apparently MacIvor wrote the script especially for Parker and Wright. They know perfectly how to play one against the other.

At the same time they talk about life and love and it is almost spiritual between the two women. You will certainly recognize many familiar spots in Toronto.

I found it to be very intense at times. The emotions were bubbling over between the two women and it was infectious.
