Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages Raucous! Loud! A riot! Good fun! The cast in this outrageous musical says it all. My favorite is the adorable Julianne Hough. I was her biggest fan when she danced in Dancing with the Stars. She is an amazing talent. I now find she can also sing. Her personality is so infectious. She plays the part of Sherrie, a young girl who leaves Oklahoma for Hollywood. She is young and innocent. She meets Drew who wants to be a singer but is shy. Diego Boneta has a fresh young look. He can really belt out a tune. He falls for Sherrie and she gives him the confidence to get on stage. He even becomes a famous rock singer. Alec Baldwin is the owner of the Bourbon Club where all the great rock music takes place. His ridiculous wig makes him look bulbous and silly. He is supposed to be a character but I felt he was the only misplaced cast member. I am not a fan of Russell Brand. He really shows his wild side as the assistant of Alec Baldwin. He is so totally ‘over the top’ but then the whole film is supposed to be an exaggerated fun musical. Catherine Zeta Jones plays the role of the mayor’s wife. She is determined to shut down the Bourbon Club. It is a sinful disgraceful place. (In her mind) She preaches and rants and raves about the depravity of the rock singers. She breaks into song and dance and is really great. What fun! To see her metamorphosis is too funny. The story of the film is about a great rock singer, Stacee Jaxx. I couldn’t believe the part is played by Tom Cruise. He certainly is in great shape and puts his heart and soul into this ridiculous role. Stacee is a drunkard, over sexed and totally unreliable. He dresses in tight black leather pants and wears a large fur coat without a shirt underneath. He talks as if he is totally drugged. Paul Giametti is his sleazy manager. Everybody sings and dances. I loved the music and I am not a fan of rock and roll. Sherrie and Drew break up over a misunderstanding and Sherrie takes a job as a pole dancer. I didn’t know you could do such things on a pole. The dancing is more than amazing. It is so sexy. The dancers are in unbelievable shape. It is worth the price of admission to watch the pole dancing. It is all ‘tongue in cheek’. The music is loud. It is all good fun and great entertainment. This musical will never go down in history as a great musical. It is fun for the moment. I enjoyed watching this outstanding cast having fun. The audience really enjoyed it all. When Tom Cruise scratches his privates the audience was delighted. Malin Ackerman and Tom Cruise become hot lovers. When she sticks her (long) tongue in his ear there was a loud guffaw in the audience. Don’t judge it too closely. Just have fun,
